Just a word of warning - lots of black ice out there on the pavements especially this morning. I've already seen one person take a tumble outside the boarded up pub at the top of Wadsley Lane (if that was you, hope you're OK - some blokes from a van were running to your aid). Be careful out there!

Our roads are the same, no gritter, cars and school bus sliding all over.

I can't believe how bad the ice is. I didn't think it was that cold when I went out this morning either. My daughter loved it when we slid down the hill in the car and wanted me to go back up and do it again .

Am fine thanks, just shaken. Have met all my new neighbours as we've all just been out shovelling grit - Great Dunkirk spirit up here!

Wrote off my car after hitting black ice a few years ago, so I can sympathise. Glad to hear you're OK.

The pavements are treacherous too. Slid all the way down from Walkley this morning, and by some miracle managed to stay upright, but there were people going down left, right and centre! Must be terrible for old people.

I am really scared of falling after once breaking my wrist falling on ice, and now having advanced osteoporosis. I have to go out today so I am getting my boots out and hope I don`t find any ice.

Ahem, do we really need to refer to the ice, by the colour of its ice?

It is not the 1970s.

After all Black Ice is not Black Ice..........Its Ice thats a dark colour.

After all would you call a dog with Black fur, A Black dog ?

The ice can have its funny sides, one bloke went for a flyer on the ice today :D:hihi::hihi: legs up in the air and all sorts.

The best thing was, he got up, and he was more concerned if anyone had seen him. He was clearly in agony as he limped off, and even attempted to crack a joke, as he was more concerned about looking an idiot, that almost breaking his arm

Thats the spirit mate  Hes probably got a very sore backside now, lets see how ge explains that to his missis

i wonder, can you claim compensation from the council if the ice on the roads/paths cause you to have an accident or is it classed as an act of god?

HotPhil
02-12-2008, 10:32
You can probably try and in this day and age might succeed. I'd hope not though, if it's icy and against common sense someone chooses to go out and then has an accident, it's possibly beyond the council's reasonable duty of care to manage to treat every single paved surface immediately to prevent it. But the days of personal responsibility are gone, so someone'll try it.

Well if there hasn't been any other incidents on Pitchford Lane / Hillcote Close at the top of Tom Lane this morning then I'll be very surprised.

Coming down and turning right onto Hillcote Close my car (which is four wheel drive) skidded but I corrected it and fortunately there were no parked cars in that area.

Coming out of Hillcote Close and heading up Pitchford Lane, the car was horizontal at one point. Again, no parked cars and fortunately, no traffic coming the other way.

You simply cannot see where the ice is and as night falls along with the temperature, I cross my fingers hoping there are no accidents (anywhere).

I basically slid all the way down the hills to Hunters Bar roundabout. Couldn't stop if I'd wanted to :( Not looking forward if it carries on like this. Might go out and do some pre-emptive gritting tonight.

Are you okay:o Worst thing I ever saw was just up from the bottom of Herries road one night, a big HGV trying to climb the hill...well it was just one big sheet of black ice and this big truck just slid down to the bottom again...was quite scary!
I value my bones too much, not that young anymore and bones take ages to heal, so will not go out till it's safe, it's like glass on some of the pavement's but you should see the look's you get from drivers if you walk in the road:(

What's worse is the fact that we get very low sun at this time of year, and it dazzles drivers, this and black ice combined..it's bad!

I got to the top of walkley road were it meets walkley lane, and slid the way back down and had to stat again! At one point I had to hang on to a lamp post and a car and slide my way down the street. Ive not walked the dog properly either as its so bad. She was skiddin about on her paws. I dont know how im going to get the little un back from school!

My bum is fine.

It was very slippery this morning at Norton Lees. Rather than risk coming off the bike on Lees Hall road, I cycled down through the woods, which was ace, coming out on Albert Road.

Almost exactly what happened to me on the cycle lane next to Infirmary Road (opposite Lock Street). Was trying to slow down cos I'd just been over a small patch of ice, just didn't get slowed down in time for the massive sheet of it. Was so icy I couldn't then get stood up! Looked a right plonker.

It's colourless actually & it's called black ice because you can't see it, you can just see the colour of the road/pavements (which are usually black tarmac).

After all would you call a dog with Black fur, A Black dog ?

Yes

I also don't mind admitting whilst defrosting the car this morning i slipped and landed right on my backside..it made me laugh so much, felt like a right numpty. Careful round the back of Ecclesall road going up towards Cemetary Road, was very slippy this morning!

See the bold. That would be because if it is icy on the paths then you can assume that it's icy on the roads too and if the car slides and you are in the way, we can't stop!

It was a flippin nightmare on the way into work this morning. Walked from Millhouses, down Abbeydale Road and into town and the first gritting I saw was outside the Town Hall. Unfortunately a gentleman had slipped and fallen just feet away from the area that had been gritted. Hope he's ok, a group of people were calling an ambulance for him as he seemed to have badly injured his leg.

I saw the fire engine leaving worrall, hope your ok after your accident.

I decided not to drive to where I usually walk the dogs and walk to worrall park. My husband who assured me the ice wasn't that bad slid past me down the hill and that was in a 4 wheel drive!

its bad up here in chapeltown too, my lad walked to secondary school whilst i took the younger one to junior school, my lad decked it and smashed his knee in, blood everywhere, luckily his mates were there to help him - i had to fetch him though as he's haemophilliac and needed treatment, the medical officer at school had a queue a mile long including other staff members who had slipped banging heads etc, flippin lethal that icy stuff.

Not necessarily - some roads are gritted, whereas pavements aren't. Also, the road surface is quite often less slippery than the smooth paving stones used in footpaths (not to mention flatter - any sideways soping path ia a nightmare in icy conditions!)

as i walked to playgroup this morning in high green i slid down one hill and went to push the double push chair up the hill and got stuck in the dip as i couldnt get up the hill to go to playgroup or up the other hill to get home. Thankfully a local workman came to the rescue and put his grippy boots on and pulled us up the hill. Thanks alot to that man otherwise i would have been stuck in that dip for ages

i fell earlier in the year and broke my wrist, not because of the ice but it as made me very wary of falling again, and at one point this morning i was stood in one spot because whichever way i looked it was covered in ice,the lady in front of me went down so i darnt move

I was out walking with the dog this morning at 6:00am and the ice did not seem that bad seemed worse about 2pm on my second walk... or maybe because it was light I was more cautious!

Fingers crossed I'll be walking in snow tomorrow morning, it will be interesting to see what the dog thinks of it as I don't know if he's been out in snow before:)

I wrote my car off yesterday morning, slid on the ice and was unable to stop, hit a parked car. Fortunately I was not hurt, but the car is wrecked.

I nearly went on my arse a couple of times yesterday morning walking down from Burncross to Chapeltown Station.

The best thing about it was, it was not like i was wearing footwear not suited to the conditions, i had my work shoes on (Doc Martens) and still slid all over the place
