View Full Version : Free informal networking arranged by us for us

Blacksheep

Hi all,

On another thread a number of us have agreed that networking events often happen at the wrong time of day, or are run by organisations wanting high levels of commitment or cash to join. As a new business i need all the cash i can get and i am not interested in breakfast meetings, buffets, or the horrible 'speed dating' version of networking.

I want a comfortable venue, a free venue, no subs to join, somewhere i can get a drink or food if i want it and ultimately an event where i make usefull local contacts and hopefully get some business.

There is only one way to kick start this and that is to arrange a date and time for the first one.

So in the interest of having a venue which everyone can access centrally i nominate The Devonshire Cat Pub on Wellington Street, Devonshire Green, City Centre.

To give everyone enough notice why don't we aim for Tuesday (because it will be quiet) January 6th.

If you are interested please post a reply on this thread.
I look forward to seeing you all there to network, discuss issues we are suffering and solutions to help each other, and hopefully gain some business!

P.S. I'll be the one in a black and red Brew Company shirt.

Cheers!

Hi Blacksheep

Great idea, I help run a support group which is aimed specifically at helping women in business and as part of that we meet at our monthly "inbetweeny" which is held in a city centre pub after work (last Friday) and is for EVERYONE who is interested in meeting socially with like-minded individuals who are also looking to grow and be successful in business. This is a free meeting also.!!

Actually Blacksheep I believe I have already met a lady who was representing your company at a workshop I delivered at Hallam University around "Finance for Business"

I would love to join you at the network evening you are looking to pull together in January, additionally if you would like to join in ours at end of January you are more than welcome. After all it's all about businesses in this area supporting and encouraging each other at every opportunity. That way not only do you succeed but you have the pleasure of seeing others do the same.

I think the idea of doing some free networking at the pub in Devonshire Green, is a great idea. I very much agree with the comments that have been made about other networking organisations.

I joined a couple of large networking organisations when I first started in business three years ago and it landed up costing me a fortune. I did'nt get much business from it either. So, I am definately up for coming down on the 6th, I believe it starts at 6.30 p.m? Would be pleased if you would confirm the starting time. All the best for the New Year and I look forward to meeting you.

Regards

Just a reminder that the informal small business networking event is in the Devonshire Cat pub on Wellington Street, Devonshire Green at 6.30 pm on Tuesday the 6th of Jan.

I will ask tonight if we can reserve an area for us to sit.
I will print a sign and stick it on the tables.
I will be wearing a black shirt with a red Brew Company logo on.

See you there!

Thanks to everyone for turning up last night, i really didn't expect so many people!
As we get used to meeting i am sure we can bring other people and make this group grow. The trick then will be to turn our contacts into business and cash!
I have something on virtually every week and every weekend in February with beer festivals and meet the brewer events so i am unable to attend a meet in that month.
I therefore propose the next one is held in March.
If i fail to arrange a date please feel free to give me a nudge via a PM.

Yes we need to keep up the interest although the Devonshire Cat is a central venue and a decent pub it would possibly be better if we could find a pub with a seperate room or similar so that everyone can get to talk to each other easier .I do'nt know if Black Sheep who had the great idea of the network or anyone else as any ideas for a name for this networking group. sounds fantastic - It would be good to have one in Feb and I dont think one meet will be steping on BlackSheeps toes too much, I on a very personally selfish level would prefer a pub with a seperate room for us lot as i have hearing aids and trying to have a good conversation with lots of background noise is quite difficult - however I am sure i can cope if this isnt possiable :)

Just caught this thread.I just want to say this is a brilliant idea and just what's needed
due to the current climate. Since the original post by ( BlackSheep) the momentum has gone into hyper drive perhaps and it's only a suggestion an events calendar could be posted on here instead of people asking when the next meet will be. I for one will be calling in sooner or later and look forward to meeting faces instead of names. Good luck to all for now .

Blacksheep
22-01-2009, 23:45
Hmm, you all seem to be keen which is excellent, but no one appears to have stepped up to facilitate. I am unable to make February so someone needs to take up the helm and organise a date, time, place etc. If you do use a pub you will need to contact them a week or so before and ask if they will reserve an area for you or you will end up being sat all over the place. Good luck to whoever organises this one, and keep me in the loop via a PM please.

indizine
23-01-2009, 09:00
I dont mind sorting something out. As it's just a couple of weeks away, perhaps those definite as this point could send a PM so we know the numbers expected, when asking the pub landlord for a separate area.

We've had 7" of snow settle here in my part of Doncaster and no sign of stopping anytime soon, so I wont be coming over if the roads are bad. Sheffield comes to a standstill at 6pm as it is without 30 miles of treacherous weather to cut through!!

yes same here, I got caught up with a late meeting so by the time i'd have got over there it would have been 7.30 at least and I wasn't sure how bad the weather was so decided not to risk it.

As this is an informal networking arrangement, thus the commitment will always be on an informal basis too. Don't forget, in a paid membership, we would have been charged for it even if we didn't turn up!

theHook
04-02-2009, 12:24
Either way, I'm personally fine which way it goes, this month or next.

Thing is, I can sense, when there's no membership fee, there's no comittment really to attend. That's only thing and I don't want to book time out and find, I'm only one there cause I want to network, get to know business people, see what they do, see if I can refer biz to them, clients etc.

But still, that's why I'm joining others which is paid fee. So, either way, I'll be there. Hopefully we have a clear date and time. This month or next month.

Cheers

Adam

04-02-2009, 12:29

Joining a networking event can be expensive so I think this is a good opportunity for us to meet and help each other particularly in the current economic climate.

If anyone needs advice regarding business plan, tax planning and accounting, I offer first hour free consultation. Please PM m

Is it free to join this site?

I was wondering the same thing - it's free to register and there's no request for card details, so I've registered and will wait and see what happens.

Can I suggest we move discussion to the other thread I started on this topic?

I'll go back to it when it's live. I don't submit my email address without knowing what i'm getting from it. Most sites are free to register, but then start charging to use it to any effect.

yeah well March is a couple of weeks off yet.

how did this launch party go - anybody go to that?

There's a free business exhibition in Leeds next Thursdsy 9-3, 2 seminars and 3 speed networking events and you only get 60 seconds to pitch! I will be shattered by the end of it!!

we made it to this one (apologies about the February meet- purely weather-related reasons *is ashamed to admit this, as has never been beaten by a bit of snow before*)

It was an interesting concept- keeping trade in Sheffield by promoting business relationships between each other. The idea is that you register what you buy- not just your products but your regular "incidentals"- printing, stationery, vehicles etc- as well as what you sell. The website will the generate possible matches between businesses. So, you may not get a sale, but you may be able to do a deal to swap/ barter services etc.

That's a very basic overview.

The website isn't up and running yet- hence the term "pre-launch- so we'll see what happens.

Hi there,
I've just started up my own business and would love to start informal networking. March 6th Friday would suit me.
Cheers

6th March is a friday - probably a worse day than the snowed off event?

Monday or Thursday of 1st week in March is best for me.

Just a quick note from me. If you plan to do a networking meet in the Dev Cat make it on a Tuesday apart from the 10th. Every Monday is quiz night, last week 106 people turned up fo that, Tuesday 10th of each month is my beer styles night and is always busy too. Thursday & Fridays are the busiest nights next to Saturday. Don't forget to arrange with Ben or Hannah if you want an area setting to one side. I will be back after March.

Could I suggest Tuesday 3rd? I'm happy to contact the Dev Cat to arrange a space to be saved.

That's the downside to informal networking - you take it as it comes. There's no commitment to attend. It's a long way (30 miles each way) for me to come if the turnout is low whereas if I lived local it wouldn't be as bad if you're just 10-15 mins from home.

Amanda88t
23-02-2009, 09:51
See its no problem for me I am walking distance away :P

But yes as there is no fee people dont 'NEED' to attend - but thats what we wanted isnt it? I guess either that date is not good for the majority and people arnt saying because they dont want to start a 'i cant come either 'snowball' but I would say that I have seen a little less activity over the last week from the people who usually say they are up for this so it could mean that lots of people havnt had a chance to sign in and say they can come... or want to come

now I am just rambelling sorry.

the forum itself has had barely any activity, yet the forum I mod on (A1 Business Forums) has been quite busy this week.

The thing is, when its a properly orchestrated event someone is coordinating it and you make a commitment because you know it will be well attended. But those people doing these events are charging for them. Even the 'free' Chamber ones are only free to members paying an annual membership fee, so they are not actually free in that sense.

I'll be there on the 3rd

Can I suggest we make this the first Tuesday of every month, that way fixing a date won't be an ongoing problem. People can either make it or not.

We could then have a new thread each month for people to say they are coming, so we can gauge numbers.

Dev Cat is booked for 6.30pm next Tuesday, 3rd March. I asked for seats for about 10 people so that should leave room for a few more than those who have already said they are attending!!
