Sheffield’s second continental market hits the streets on Thursday 6th November promising to be at least a third bigger.

There’ll be even more choice from traders from all over Europe selling cheeses, wines, beers, fine chocolates, designer fashions, fine British foods, flowers, meats and more!

The market runs from Thursday 6th November through to Sunday 9th.

Opening times are:

· 9am – 6pm on Thursday;
· 9am-8pm on Friday and Saturday; and
· 10am-4pm on Sunday.

Customers can further enjoy the continental experience in Sheffield by buying in Euros. Thomas Cook on Fargate is offering commission-free exchange of sterling into euros and vice versa for the duration of the market. They’ll also be opening on Sunday 9th November. All the market traders will accept sterling or euros for any purchases.

Sunday is Remembrance Day so traders will also be laying a wreath on the Cenotaph in Barkers Pool.

The Lord Mayor, Cllr Diane Leek, will also be visiting the market on Thursday, the first day of opening.

Denis MacShane MP, Minister for Europe, will also be at the market on Saturday promoting the enlargement of Europe.

The event has been organised by Market Initiatives Limited and Sheffield City Council’s Markets Service.

Cllr Gill Furniss, Cabinet Member for Development, Environment and Leisure said: “This Continental Market is going to be even bigger than last time. It’s a great opportunity to get some really special Christmas presents, to have a really good shop and enjoy the city centre.”

These are truly outstanding markets. I regularly frequent the one in Manchester, especially near Christmas.

There is something magical about being there on a cold day, with the smell of mulled wine and a hog roasting on an open coke fire, surrounded by stalls selling TRADITIONAL Christmas decorations and toys that don't need batteries!

brilliant! i had some yummy little cakes and biscuits there last year, and the savoury stuff? well i went there for lunch twice in a row so that i could sample the variety. i reckon its a well good idea and perfect location.
there are some nice delhis down in hunters bar but they are a bit expensive and not on everybody's doorstep. (just on ecclesall's - their residents can afford it).

This sounds fantastic!

Without wanting to put a dampener on it tho' - how do the Council Env Health manage to resist paying a visit? (PS for the record - I reckon that a few germs can be a v good thing)

I haven't had a chance to go to this yet, but the one in Manchester was amazing (I just happened to be there when it was on!). I doubt the Sheffield one will be as large as the Manchester one - can anyone confirm?

The Manchester one had to be in two places last time - Albert Square and also St Annes Square.

Well I have just had a look around and I can tell you that it is wonderful.

There are lots of places to buy hot food if you pop over in your lunch hour, so you can spend more time looking round

Some great cheese, sausage, chocolates, vegetables, crockery, baskets.......

MILLIONS of scarves and candles (in case anyone was thinking of buying me any more for Christmas this year)

And lots of really nice interesting unusual stuff

and interesting European accents

I am going again tomorrow, me!

I've been told that there was a French Market on in town yesterday.
also read in Sh. Telegraph the other week that there's a Farmer's Market scheduled for The Moor at end of Nov.

anyone know where to got info on when these are scheduled?

Some of the members of Sheffield ME Group are interested in going to these markets, but due to illness/disability have to plan trips to town in advance.

Any help appreicated !

I went today and I've been to the one in Manc whicch imo had far too many sausage stalls. The one in Sheffield is far better, of course, with far more variety. Apart from one oaf smoking over the biscuits and dropping ash on the food it was great fun.

If you get a chance get down there before it closes.

Fuzzy & I went earlier. It's great isn't it.

Got some chestnuts, some brie, some Calvados (hmmmm nice!), some nice bread, and some radishes
Had a 'just fresh from the oven' pain au chocolat and and also tried a one of the fish dishes that was being cooked up.
Oh yeah got enough garlic to last us the rest of the year.

There's always the Manchester one, it will run from 10am to 8pm, between Thursday 20 November and Sunday 21 December 2003.

Wow, that's on for a month solid! I can strongly recommend visiting on a Sunday - how about a Forum 'away' visit? I'd love to meet you all on my turf!

Can we persuade this weekend's market to come to Sheffield for a month? Or perhaps drop the hint to some of Sheffield's existing stall-holders might want to develop a more continental product line... Did anyone go to the Kelham Island Christmas fair last year? That deserves to be of similar quality to last weekend's market.

I'll say. Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather see market stalls selling fruit and quality items rather than crap clothes and mobile phone cases.
