From thursday of last week I've had the mumps, for the first two days I just thought I was getting fat rapidly but as it turns out I have the mumps.

I tell you now this is the worst virus ever I look like Eric Cartman and I can't eat with you my jaw aching. Anybody else has or had the mumps? I'm trying to figure out who gave it me so I can beat them up with my cheecks.

Isn't it mumps that can make men infertile???

I though most people were immunised these days...:suspect:

Are you allowed on a bus with Mumps...shouldn't you be quarantined??

All those "childhood" things; Measles, Mumps, Chicken Pox etc are all much worse if you get them when you are an adult.

I had all those between the ages of 4 and 6.

I can vaguely remember mumps being pretty horrible, but I don't think it can have been as bad as glandular fever which I had last year.

Mumps are contagious, therefore you should be placed under Quarantine for your own and everybody else's good.

I had mumps at the age of 25 ( some dopey women had brought her mump ridden child into where I/She worked, in the afternoons) - if he wasn't allowed in school, he shouldn't have been allowed in my place of work) :(

First I new of it, I was walking down fargate feeling very very strange - almost halucinating and feverish .... could not believe it when the doc said I had mumps.

To be honest, even after you are no longer 'contagious' (is it ten days or two weeks?) you will feel physically cream crackered.
It will probably 'do you' for a month:(
I hope you can afford to take the time off.
I have heard mumps is doing the rounds at campuses, halls....
Good luck :)

I had the mumps when I was a child - is it one of these illnesses where if you get it during childhood it doesn't reoccour or is it possible I can still contract a dose?

Completely unrelated but marginally relevant- I've been really croaky (Some cheeky swine said I sounded like Vin diesel yesterday! see previous posts for my feelings about him) and now am coughing up all kinds of nasties with a raging head and swollen glands. What the hell is it? I feel poorly ........................ MUUUUUUUUUM!

It's spread like wildfire round staff where I work, but no kids have had it.

Mumps is a viral infection of the parotid salivary glands. These glands are located just below and in front of the ears. They produce saliva, which drains into the mouth and helps to break up and digest food.

Mumps is caused by a contagious virus, which is transmitted through airborne droplets from the coughs and sneezes of infected people. It takes around 16-21 days between coming into contact with an infected person, and symptoms developing. Mumps is normally a mild illness, although in a minority of cases there can be severe complications, such as deafness and meningitis. This is why children are vaccinated against mumps.

People with mumps should drink plenty of cool fluids, especially water.

Avoid fruit juice because it stimulates saliva production, which can be painful.

A mild painkiller will help to reduce pain and mild fever.

It may be soothing to hold a warm flannel against the swollen glands.

About 1 in 4 adolescent boys or adult men with mumps develop an inflammation of one or both testes (orchitis). This inflammation can be very painful and if it affects both testes, there is some evidence to suggest it may lead to sterility.

Males are advised to stay off their feet during the illness to avoid the testes becoming inflamed.

Get well soon Deadstar and take care of your jacobs

I've never had mumps. So a couple of years ago when I heard there was an epidemic spreading through the University (my girlfriend was still a student back then) I went straight to my doctor and asked to be immunised.

There was no problem, I was sent to the nurse and given the MMR jab on the spot. They were aware of the epidemic, and were pleasantly surprised that at least one of their patients had the good sense to approach them about it. I think I was the only one.

SV - I'm currently off work with what sounds like the same virus as yours - not mumps. I've had bad earache as well as a rotten, sore throat. According to my GP it's a viral flu-type thing which is doing the rounds in Sheffield. The advice was to take complete rest and mild painkillers such as paracetamol. It will take about a week to get rid of it, she said.

My ex caught the mumps years ago, he got menigitis through it and became sterile as well, lucky we had got two children when it happened, thats how he caught it from the children.

He was poorly for at least 2 months.

Dont wait if you feel you are getting worse, go visit the doctors.

People are immunised but the immunisation doesn't actually stop you getting mumps, it just stops it coming on as badly/dangerously. You get the lighter side of it.

I didn't know this until we had a mumps epidemic at college a while ago and I asked a girl who had just got back from being off with it and she said that's what her doctor had told her. It could've been much worse had she not had the immunisation.

Hope you're soon feeling on form again Deadstar and you get back on your feet in no time!

Take care now,

Lottie x

This mumps thing has become a nationwide epidemic now. Fortunately the uni were giving out free vaccinations before Christmas so myself like many other students opted to have that done. I know two or three students who didn't go to have it done "because they don't like needles" who have since had the mumps.

Doctor's surgeries give it out free as well. I had mine done for free anyway. Just told them I knew about the epidemic and was worried about it due to my close proximity to students, and they gave me it, no questions asked.

My advice to anyone who hasn't had mumps already - Go get the MMR.

Can someone tell me what happens when you get mumps? I know you get a face like a hamster, but other than that I dont know what to look for...

I've had my MMR, but I've been quite poorly recently and I'm hoping I haven't got the first few signs of mumps, what with it going round etc...

I've got an incredibly sore throat, very red and inflamed around my tonsils.. It hurts when I swallow food/drink and I have a funny taste inside my mouth... In addition to this, all my jaw hurts and my ears are hurting too... Is this the first stages of mumps or is it just something else?

Apparently if you have already had the mumps you cannot then contract it again (although as already mentioned immunisation doesn't necessarily prevent you getting it). So glad I had mumps as a child. Unlike Rubella which I've managed to have twice, the second time after having had two immunisations (not at the same time!). :gag:

Thanks Lucy... I've got an appointment with the docs tomorrow, hopefully they'll sort me out then. Hope it isn't mumps! Got an exam in a fortnight!

There is a lot of tonsillitus around at the moment, and it's quite bad,but when my son developed meningitis through having mumps, the doctor told us that with meningitis your chin won't touch your chest, and I've always used that as a guide, I know it's not very technical, but It's always something I've watched out for, but this by no means should stop you seeking medical advice.
