Hiya
Yes its the "pull hair out time" so while I search the website looking for computer shops I thought I might post here as I know you lot are a helpfull bunch and you never know ... one of you might have the answer.
I am looking to replace my CPU but I need any AthlonXP Throaghbred upto a 2600+, finding one isnt easy. 266 pcb.
Anyone know of a place to get these from ?
My motherboard is a GA-7VTXE+ gigabyte.
I know I know what you are saying ..... just buy a new motherboard.
Ebuyer.co.uk dont have in stock.

Alladins Cave up near the Netto on Middlewood Road still stock Athlon XPs, IIRC. Otherwise, go to the computer fair at Don Valley this weekend (4th and 5th June).

Thanks for that I shall try the computer fair this weekend.
Or this is the sort of thing you can always find on ebay (http://search.ebay.co.uk/thoroughbred-athlon-xp), assuming of course you're happy with a second-hand cpu... Although prices tend to be silly on things you can't buy any more - obviously there's demand out there for people who don't want to upgrade their motherboard!

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/AMD_Athlon_XP__Mobile_.html
The second item in that link is basically what you had before but is the 'mobile' variant. It has an unlocked multiplier (good for overclocking), lower Vcore (runs cooler) and can be raised to 333 FSB (from the default 266, which you need) without any problems since it's basically a Barton core which were ment to run at 333!
If I were you though I'd get the 2500, and buy yourself this:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/BGrade_Motherboards.html (second from bottom Abit NF2 v2.0) and assuming you have PC2700/333FSB Ram you'll be able to set the FSB manuallly on the motherbaord jumpers to 333 - you'll get an instant 20% boost in permance without any need to worry. If your RAM isn't up to the job can can buy this:
http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Category=27&SubCat=&Name=&Page=&SortBy=1
6th from bottom (say's Super Special next to it - it's PC3200, 400DDR Ram, but Ram can always run slower and it might be useable in a future PC you build - so it's worth paying £1 more compared with the item above it)
Total cost = £65 (processor) + £25 (Ram) + £27 (Motherboard) =
£125 approx inc. delivery.
Or you could just get the processor in the first link ;) That's the simple solution. O by the way the processors in the first link are arguably better than a thoroughbred because they have double the amount of L2 cache (they're mobile 'barton' cores).

I can find a AthlonXP 1800+ on the interent for £23.49, if I get no joy from computer fair tomorrow. although I cannot see it advetised anywhere, then its a new motherboard.
I just got a whole heap of stuff from novatech .co .uk
nice site, cheap, arrived all together
