Fareast 01-06-2005, 12:39 Dear Ddolly Just to let you know dear , the War's over and the Luftwaffe have all gone home. Let the sun shine in , rip up that ration book and convert that air-raid shelter into a garden shed. It's all binge-drinking and crack cocaine now. Times have changed. Cyclone 01-06-2005, 12:42 go to yell.co.uk, put in dunhelm mills and your postcode, it will show you the nearest one and can even do you a map to get there. commuter 02-06-2005, 11:46 bought 2 blackout blinds from Ikea at the weekend for £25. They're ok if you're happy to diy them to fit. And of course you need transport (and the costs incurred) plus a bank loan for all the other "wow that's a great idea" things you pick up while you're there. So £340's later ....... Internetowl 02-06-2005, 15:05 material shop 'fine fabrics' at Hillsborough - next to pet shop near old post office just off Middlewood Road.. lou070879 02-06-2005, 16:31 I saw 2 sets of large curtains in Oxfam on Ecclesall road about 2 weeks ago. They looked like black out material, and they only wanted 2.99 each .. I was tempted, but don't have anything to black out !!!!! Fareast 02-06-2005, 16:51 lou070879 , You should have snatched them up ! My grandma bought some blackout material in 1942 and when the war finished it was still servicable. Waste not , Want not ! By 1946 , she had made 14 pairs of black knickers [various sizes ] and a black dress for formal occasions. She later became a seamstress and never looked back. ddolly 03-06-2005, 08:12 Dear Fareast, I do dress as though I'm in the French Resistance so I just want the curtant to complete the look! Arhh, no I just keep getting woken by the bleeding 5.00 sunrise every morning and my blankets just dont cut it! Thanks for all the suggestions - fingers crossed I'll get sorted tomorrow. Fareast 03-06-2005, 08:30 Dear Ddolly Hope you didn't mind the joke------it's just that when I saw the word , "blackout " , it brought back memories of my parents and the second world war-------dates me a bit , that ! Actually , I really remember that my mother often mentioned an old dispute , going back to the 1914-18 war ! Even in that war , they had to have blackout curtains up. They lived in Catcliffe and apparently the warden was a well-known , "jobsworth " and this led to an argument about the blackout. I was only joking , too , about the black knickers but women did really use the nylon from parachutes to make stockings and such. Also , I'd bet the no - longer - needed blackout curtains WERE put to good use ! It was a real struggle , right up to the '50's to find materials of any kind. So , you can see why , "blackout " brought on the flood of memories. terryz78 29-08-2010, 07:02 I had a similar problem with the skylight in my old house as it was quite large and I wanted some blackout blinds (http://www.tradeblinds.co.uk/blackout_roller-blinds-c) because that room was occasionally used as a bedroom and I wanted to keep the sunlight out so as not to wake the guests staying in that room too early in the morning. I ended up buying some made to measure blackout blinds online, and whilst they weren’t quite as cheap as making them myself, they did fit very well and they were a lot less hassle than going through all the rigmarole of finding the right blackout material and making them up. That solution worked for me and they weren’t that expensive and were still working a few years down the line. Litres 29-08-2010, 07:54 If all else fails, you could try painting it with a suitable specialist black paint. selphie 29-08-2010, 09:00 Dunelm Mill on Queens road sell them, Failing that I'm almost positive I have got a pair of blackout curtain liners somewhere that you can have for a tenner.
