View Full Version : Needing a cat for Christmas
Hi all, as the title says I am needing a Cat before Christmas day for my fiancee. We have had cats before so we know what were doing and I've got everything ready such as a bed, scratch post etc... We're ready to meet the cat and bring home as soon as available. We've got a toddler who is great around pets so we need a cat who is used to children or is just very friendly towards them. Any cat around the year old mark would be perfect, thank you in advance. :)
have you tried the cat shelter? Medusa should be able to put you in touch
It may be better to locate your new cat, and give a photo for the actual day, then pick the cat up after your toddler has done Christmas day. Having an excitable toddler in the house isn't the best welcome for a new cat who may take fright and leave home at the first opportunity!
For the reasons stated by Strix most shelters will not rehome any animal this close to Christmas, irrelevant of someones cat experience.;)
eeejay174 26-11-2008, 13:29 i think you do need to consider the cats in the local animal shelters, there are some real beauties and if i wasn't allergic to them, i would certainly have taken them all by now,
i think what strix says could be a good idea, i don't know the rules with the shelters and the pound, but it may be better to wait until after xmas, when the toddlers a little older, and the xmas madness is out of the way, so the baby may be a bit more distracted by the new presents and not harrass the cat too much. Thats not meant in any negative way, i just know toddlers, can be a bit exuberant with cats, even more so when they are in the same room and you're not, and as much as you want too, you can't be everywhere at once. The first thing my toddler did with my friends cat was hoist it up in the air by its tail saying look mummy cat cat, thankfully, the cat was incredibley soft, and didnt claw her, but it could have been so much worse.
I hope you do find the cat thats right for you - there is C.A.T.S, the cats protection league, the council pound and the rspca so with luck, you should find the right cat for you all x
I will never rehome any animal as a christmas present, I have presently 2 rabbits and 2 guinea pigs needing homes but they will be put up for adoption after christmas.

beansforyou 26-11-2008, 15:56 That was my initial thought too :)
But I didn't post because it then lead to the question in my head ' why will I eat a turkey and joke about it, but find buying a pet for christmas so wrong....'
So I didn't bother

I will be eating a vegetarian/vegan celebration roast with a clear conscience.
Moggies will have some bits of free range turkey.
I've given a cat as a present ONCE. I was a teenager and my G/F wanted a kitten. The CPL DID allow the rehoming of the kitten but it was done with the co-operation of her mother, she knew all to well that when daughter dearest went off to university, the kitten wouldn't be accompanying her....and likewise I asked her mum about it and we all went together to explain the situation, and that she would be happy to be the long-term keeper.
And we picked the oldest kitten there, the one with the oddest patches that was a bit "funny looking". In my view, they are the most beautiful ones anyway
Fishpole 26-11-2008, 21:34 I was given a kitten as a gift, by my boyfriend of ooh about a week, when I was 15 years old. That's a long time ago and I was horrified! I had to take this poor little thing home and tell my parents I'd just found it dumped in a bag (they wouldn't have approved of the true story but probably didn't believe the lie either). No matter that we didn't have anything suitable for a kitten, no litter tray, no food, nothing! We made do and were fortunate enough to be able to rehome the kitten, before our dog ate it, but it was the most inconsiderate present I've ever had. :( No animal should ever be a "gift". If someone decides to have a pet, they should choose it themselves and make sure it is right for them.
Well, yea that was my point. THat if a "gift" of an animal is to be given, then it can't be a surprise and it must be done properly.
On the "surprise" bit....
Imagine waking up on a Xmas day and someone handing you a baby "Merry Xmas...now look after that for years to come..I'm off" - That's what giving a pet equates to (y'know, if I had the lottery money to make a TV ad using that scenario to drive home the message......I'm going to put a quid on the lotto just in case....)

Yeah I agree,
Takara was an 18th birthday present from my parents but I got her early (because that's when she was ready and a good time for us, not when my birthday fell), I chose the breeder, the puppy, I went to visit her a few times before bringing her home, I signed the papers etc...
She was only a present for my 18th because I couldn't afford the £500 for her and neither could my parents without justifying it and cutting out another cost.
So, I didn't get anything on my birthday except a cuddle from an adolescent spotty puppy bought 8 months previous! And I was over the moon with it!
Sorry... don't know where you could get a cat, but agree with the others - I'd wait til the excitement of Christmas is over :)
