Are there any probs with putting an American cheque into a bank here in Sunny England? Do they do all the conversion etc themselves? Do banks charge for this?

Ta :)

LloydsTSB charge 5-8 quid depending on the value of the cheque. Mine have only ranged from $100-200 but I think 8 quid is the max. Takes about 3 days to clear usually. Which isn't too bad. The charge is pretty standard with most banks. All you have to do is take the cheque to the counter and they will give you a form to fill in. This gets posted back to you when it clears as a reciept.

The rate they give is usually pretty reasonable too and I tend to end up with half as many pounds as it would be in dollars after the fee.

The only thing is that usually it's not actually cleared. The cheque can "bounce" months, or even years later.

But that can happen even with a UK cheque but rarely ever does!!

Try Auctionpix (http://www.auctionpix.co.uk/misc/money.html) it only costs 95p per transaction a lot cheaper than UK banks...I have used this for foreign payments for ebay items in cheques and money orders with no probs at all

At work, we used to have trouble with american payments, until we opened up a dollar account in an american bank and all our US cheques go straight to the branch and in our account in Philadelphia. Although most of our american customers pay us by credt card, which is much quicker and much more convenient.

We have even worse trouble with bank transfers from Europe. Often the fees amount to £10 - 20 and can be quite random and irratic. And often take 10 days or more. This is especially annoying with German and Austrian people, who refuse to use credit cards, to pay, as they see debt as a shameful thing.

you can get charged a lot more than that if you aren't careful. Bear in mind we have a very good exchange rate at the moment.
