I posted this a few days ago in the middle of the night, and it had vanished under a flurry of other posts, so i though id try a day-time posting.. here's my origional post.

Hiya there

We've recently adopted a lovely black and white Long Haired Female cat from The Sheffield Cats Shelter, She's in her second week with us and is getting on fine.. Now I know Long Hairs help need grooming a lot, and fortunately shes grown to love being groomed on her back and side, and will (just) allow me to groom her belly.

But she doasnt seem very happy at all when i groom her rear end, i have to say neither would i be..lol The problem is when she poo's sometime little bit gets stuck in her hair and ive been reduced to sneaking up on her and wiping her ass with a tissue otherwise she stinks..

Has anyone had experience, or ideas how i can make this a more pleasent experience for both myself and the cat ?? ( i can see how people may jokingly have a suggestion reply to that..lol... but RESIST ha ha )

You need to cut the clingons out with scissors first!

I thought it was captain kirks job to eliminate 'clingons' !!

I've had a few have suggested that i actually thin the hair out at the rear end or even shave it, though the advice i think is to have the vet do it under sedation, be a shame to have a shaved butt in weather like this mind.

OK- groom the rest of her with a whole body cuddle, combing down her legs and paying particular attention to the trouble spots (under her arms, round her collar, under her ears, her tummy etc) then get her back up on her feet. It's easiest to groom her bum if she's standing.

Turn yourself around so she's under your arm and you can gently grasp her with your upper arm around her middle, with her head behind you and her bum and tail at the front of you. At this point it's really helpful if there's someone else fussing her head and making a fuss of her.

Now put the hand of the arm that's around her under her tummy and support it so she's standing.

You can now comb straight down the back of her back legs using your other hand. For this I'd recommend a comb like an 'Untangler' comb, which has a single row of rotating metal blunt ended teeth which are quite widely spaced. If you comb downwards first then comb backwards away from her hopefully you'll get any knots to the end of the fur away from her body, which will allow you to get a little knot splitter blade to just snip those off.

I was the groomer at the Shelter for 8 years, so I've been savaged with the best of them ;)
