Does the stuff work - how easy is it to use ?

We used to use something similar when I worked for the water board and its good stuff but you have to make sure you give it a good long spray and then work like a maniac to get the job done before the pipe thaws.
Dont touch the dry ice too, its horrible skin peeling stuff.

I've tried using it but I probably didn't use enough or leave it long enough because after only a few minutes it started thawing.
If you have to move pipes etc will it be frozen for long enough?
I know it will be a pain but draining will be preferable.

dont need to remove any pipes - only need to cap them :)
thinking of using a compression joint to simply bolt on the end to make a seal ... soldering would probably melt the ice :D
just dont want too much of a mess.....

by the time you've paid for the stuff your halfway to having a plumber do it with no mess. but if you want to do it yourself i will need to know what system you've got to best advise you.

My advice for you would be to drain down the system. Then you've got all the time in the world to do a decent job and cut back and cap off below the floorboards. Also when you refill, if you have got any leaks they are easier to sort out. (When you freeze you'd better make sure the joint is water tight cos there is a full system of water behind that plug of ice.)
Plumber could either 'bung' the F&E and vacuum the system or if its a combi then partially drain down -lock rads and drain whats in the pipework.
Either of the above only takes 10-15mins, 10mins quicker than waiting for the ice plug to form on one of those freeze kits. :)

thanks for your replys....
I completed the work last night... The freezer was just the ticket. No leaks no mess. From getting under the floor to putting the old rad on the drive and making sure no leaks - 30 mins.
Total cost £16 for freezer
£3 for end plugs
I've never drained a system before but the last time a plumber did it - he seemed to be messing around for about an hour - bleeding rads etc
