View Full Version : Newbie! Found a book called Knitted Icons
splodgeyAl 24-11-2008, 23:37 Hello Knitters! ;)
I spotted Knitted Icons (http://www.books-by-isbn.com/1-84340/1843404192-Knitted-Icons-25-Legends-from-Audrey-Hepburn-to-Ziggy-Stardust-1-84340-419-2.html) in Waterstones the other weekend, and it made me smile, and reminded me of my gran (who used to make loads of knitted and sewn toys - she even made me a womble when I was a kid  ), so I bought it.
The problem is that the only thing I've ever knitted was a triangular scarf when I was about 6. It wasn't meant to be triangular, by the way!
So, I guess that book is an ambitious place to start, but I'd love to be able to make some of these icons. Do you have any tips etc for a complete newbie, please? And just to possibly add to the fun, I'm left handed, does that make any difference to how I follow the instructions?
Help!! Please!! :help:  :help:
Mr&MrsRadish 24-11-2008, 23:47 I've seen that book briefly, and it looks fun. Why not go to the Wool Baa on Ecclesall Road. There are mostly friendly people willing to help, and knitting is a skill for life, so the small price you pay to learn is worth every penny. It is possible for a leftie to learn to knit right handed. My son is a leftie and i taught him to knit right handed. He doesn' t do it often, but when he is really wound up it does the job. Good luck!
Mr&MrsRadish 24-11-2008, 23:52 You are naughty splodgyAl. I've just ordered it from Play. As if i needed any encouraging!

 sorry about that! It did the same to me. I flicked thru it, laughed out loud, flicked again, put it back on the shelf, walked off, walked back, picked it back up, had another flick, put it back and got a less dog-eared one (cheeky, I know!) and bought it
Been flicking thru it since, and thought, I could have a go.
Cheers, yeah, I've just read some other newbie thread, I'll get down the Wool Baa sometime. Is it open weekends?
Mr&MrsRadish 25-11-2008, 00:06 Yes, Jill is open on Saturdays, but i think there are specific times for lessons, which i am not sure of. Look on the web site or give Jill a call. I feel a Mr T. doll for a guy a Mr Radish's work. Ha Ha!
splodgeyAl 25-11-2008, 00:11 I want an Einstien!! And Muhammad Ali, and Chairman Mao, and Bob Marley! And, and, and... !!!
I'll checkout Jill's website now, thanks again!
Mr&MrsRadish 25-11-2008, 00:15 Just to make it clear, i don't go round feeling Mr T dolls, as i posted above, i meant i feel like making a Mr T. doll. Just thought i'd better get that cleared up...just in case...you know...ahem.
splodgeyAl 25-11-2008, 00:20 I was gonna ask if you get paid by the hour for feeling mr t dolls, but it seemed a bit forward!
Mr&MrsRadish 25-11-2008, 00:27 Not right now, but when i find somewhere that pays by the hour, you will be the first to know!!!!
Katemate 02-12-2008, 21:00 I've made a start on the Einstein doll, I love that book!
splodgeyAl 02-12-2008, 21:39 I keep looking at this book, but it all just seems so complicated  I think I'll stick to plan A: give it to my mum for crimble, then badger her to make one for me!!
Mr&MrsRadish 02-12-2008, 22:51 My book came yesterday. Mr T. will be the first one to made, but i will have to knit the clothes, as my sewing is atrocious. The Beatles look good too.
Moonfire 07-07-2009, 22:43 OMG, what was that!! I had to add it to my wish list ;)
I don't actually charge anything for knitting advice during the day. If you want to come to classes in the evening, then you have to cough up!
