Whilst looking around for errata for Sallypies gold cardigan problem, I noticed this (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/nov/18/future-knitter-launch) due to be released on January 7th. Id be interested in having a look, but at £5.99 it would need to be special.

You are right lisaH, it will need to be topnotch for the price, but with so many knitting publications on offer now, and the many online resources that a great majority of us knitters can access, what new will it have to offer? Lets hope it isn't covered in a plastic bag with a "free gift" so we can try before we buy.

 don't let a little plastic bag get in your way to have a look see :D

I'll be interested to see what Future do with this. I'm particularly curious as I've read elsewhere that it's aimed at 'advanced' knitters - I wonder what their definition of that term will turn out to be?

My hope is still for a UK Interweave Knits equivalent. Yarn Forward never quite lived up to the expectations I had of it there (though with its new editor, it might be revitalised).

Having said that, the patterns in Vogue Knitting have been far superior to those of Interweave Knits, of late (though I still prefer the non-pattern content of the latter).

I'll certainly be buying the first issue of The Knitter. I think it's a little on the expensive side for a monthly magazine, but as I don't buy any of the other UK magazines, it won't be too much of an issue to shell out £6 a month if the content's worthwhile.

I also read elsewhere that the higher than average price is meant to be in keeping with the audience it's trying to attract; they expect quality and that doesn't go with a (relatively) cheap and cheerful price and image. Puts me in mind of Selvedge (though that's quarterly, I think).

Good point. I'm more likely to turn to places like the Twist Collective if I want to purchase a pattern, then you have the free collections like Knitty and Drops etc. Most of my inspiration comes from Ravelry these days; the Friends' activity section is great for getting pattern ideas from like-minded knitters.

I wonder what percentage of the UK knitting population is online, and uses the internet in preference (or even just as well as) more traditional resources?

I dont as a rule buy knitting magazines - I have bought the odd one before but have been really disappointed with the content. I much prefer the online mags (Twist is good, Knitty has some fantastic and free patterns and I have been impressed with the Inside Loop aswell) and prefer to pay for one off patterns rather than a whole magazine.

There is a new knitting magazine out - sister to Simply Knitting but for more experienced knitters. Will be getting a copy but opinions welcome when you've seen it.

I'd seen an advert for this too - and so would be interested in hearing what its like before I fill my house with yet more knitting related stuff!

Has anybody got a copy other than me? What do you think? I'm not sure yet. It's well presented and beautifully photographed, but i wouldn't find anything but the Turkish cast on challenging. There aren't any easy knits for beginners in it, but the adverts did say it wouldn't be aimed at that market anyway. At least it wasn't and won't be wrapped in cellophane so we will be able to try before we buy.

Has any one had a chance to have a look at The Knitter yet ?- the sales people at Future Publishing are proclaiming a triumph - but then they're not necessarily knitters! By the by - any thoughts on the Debbie Bliss Magazine?

I can't find it anywhere.

Debbie bliss magazine annoyed me a little as it contained chunks of book that made it not terribly worthwhile if you've got some of the books. However there were a few patterns I didn't have.

We'll see what the next one brings.

Magazines here just don't come up to the same standards as the states ones (especially interweave) :(

I found this preview (http://www.zinio.com/express3?issue=336872700) for those that haven't seen it yet. Word on the vine on Ravelry suggests that most of the patterns are not new though.

It was also in Sainsbury's on Archer Road last night.

I had a look but didn't think it was worth the cash. Decided Tatler was a better investment.

I bought it just out of curiosity but am pretty disappointed really. I was hoping for something a bit more akin to Interweave Knits - this was not it unfortunately :( Whilst I was in Smiths I noticed a new Yarn Forward and that seems to have improved a lot and looked on the balance that it might have been a better buy (especially since it was about £2 cheaper)

I've bought a copy this afternoon and I think I'm disappointed too! :(
I had a flick through it in the shop and thought it looked quite good, but now I've had a closer look, I'm not so sure! I do like some of the patterns but they won't be top of my list to knit. At least it says some where in it, that they won't be selling it wrapped in plastic in the future, so I'll be able to have a look before buying another issue!

It sounds like it's not really worth the money. I don't think I would've bought it at that price anyway.

I too was disappointed, and put it back on the shelf. I especially wasn't impressed by the "Letters" page, wherein it was comments from designers they'd sent proof copies to. Come on, Editor, they all want to be published in it and paid for articles! No wonder they were complimentary!
