parish records....
even if they aren't on the website records, (particularly those pre-1837) were the responsibility of the parish church, which logged all hatches, matches, and despatches... well, they log christenings, rather than births, but, then, a baby that has not been born can hardly be christened, can they? lol.
the difficulty with christenings, is, that the child could be almost any age, from days/ hours old, when it was "sprinkled", to months, or even years old.

i've found out that LDS have pre 1837 records, so currently searching I.G.I on LDS website and charles Lee wasn't christened till 1928 so as you say this doesn't help working out a birth year
There is a CHARLES LEE of Swinton christened 11th. February 1821. Father Benjamin Lee Mother Mary- Also
ANN LEE christened 30th. December 1832. Same parents.
These could be your Charles children after marriage.
JOHN LEE christened 8th. October 1848 Swinton
WILLIAM LEE christened 11th. October 1846 Swinton
Parents of John & William were Charles & Ann Lee of Swinton
Hope this helps.

You could look for him on the 1841 census before he gets married.

cheers cynthia yes they are his kids thanks to LDS i found that he married Ann BArnes on the 10th of Jan 1836.. Not sure if it's the Charles you found as i believe he was born in 1823..
but that would mean he was 13 so your's may be the one!!
thanks to all for your help
Is this your Charles 1861,
Charles 38
William 16
Mary Ann 10
Henry 7
all born Swinton

yes thats the one Retep, i got it off 1837online
i got this off LDS too for 1881
Charles Lee H 58
Martha E Lee W 51
Thomas Hicks S 23
George Hicks S 21
Benjamin Brown Lee S 19
James Lee S 16
Alfred Lee S 14
George F Lee S 11
John Lee S 8
Alma Lee D 5
Walter Lee S 3
Arthur Lee S 7m
note that Thomas & George Hicks are stepsons to charles but i believe the rest are his and Martha's together although dont understand where "Brown" comes into it with Ben..
i have found most of them on 1901 census including Ben & there is no "Brown" in his name there
Martha is also living with Thomas Hicks so believe Charles to be deceased
Hi Martin- unless you have concrete proof of your Charles age I would be sceptical. Mostly they could not read or write in the early/middle 1800s, I am sure that if there were a few children Mum & Dad got confused about their ages.
My ggrandmother was 13yrs in 1851- 19yrs. old in1854 and
49yrs. of age in 1881 !!!!!!!!!!. Was she born in 1832, 1835, or 1838 ?. I know she was christened October 1837.
You should go on to the Sheffield genealogy site you will find lots of help.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~engsheffield
No www.
on the right hand side of the introductory page you will see IGI Batch Numbers click on - next page scroll down to Yorkshire O-S-click on S (for Swinton), scroll down to Swinton click on C108011- next page enter Lee on search criteria and you will see all LEE'S of Swinton thet were christened under that batch number.
Benjamin was named after his grandfather and the Brown COULD be grandmother's maiden name.
If I can be of further assistance please ask.
Cheers Cynthia, Canada.
