Hi

Currently I have these attached to my Mac:

500GB Iomega USB drive
Lacie 250GB Firewire drive
Netgear ReadyNAS RAID drive with 4 x 250GB drives and USB connection

I like the RAID protection of the ReadyNAS but it makes way too much noise , takes ages to boot up and appear on the network and is pretty slow due to USB connection and so I tend not to use it much as its a pain.

Was thinking of perhaps taking the SATA drives out of it and putting into a Firewire DROBO but looking around I see that for the price of an empty DROBO case you can get (for example) a Lacie 2big Quadra firewire Raid device with 2 x 1TB drives in. So loads of storage and firewire RAID, and ready to use out of the box. I could replace all my external storage with one device perhaps. Is that a good idea or should I get the DROBO which is easily upgradable with drives in future ? Then again I have no experience of DROBO units.

Just been a bit trigger happy and got a WD Studio II 2TB unit from play.com for £250. Quiet, RAID 1, energy efficient, firewire and more, Looks fab :)

Apparently Lacie drives often die at the 1 year mark but WD comes with 5 year guarantee so much better and also cheaper :)
