Hi

i am ideally looking for something close to meadowhall and city (sheffield uni).

I found a home 3 miles away from both for 60k, 2bed room but was told the area was mainly council homes with a rough under tone.

I am a student and since i have to pay some 30k rent from now to the time i finish my course i thought i would get a home to buy.

I live on london road at the moment but homes here are too highly priced.

My limit is 70k, can anyone recomend any areas close to uni (sheffield) and not too far from meadow hall???

cheers

I had a similar budget to you when I bought a house about a year ago. You wont find a "nice area" without spending atleast 90-110k. Your best bet will be to find one of the nicer parts of one of the less popular areas. Pretty much the whole of S5 which covers nearly all of North Sheffield is considered not very nice and so houses are fairly cheap. However if you spend enough time looking around you will find parts that aren't as bad as the rest. If you pick somewhere on a decent bus route you can find places that are about 20 mins to town and 20 mins to meadowhall which isn't too bad.

I have lived in Southey for nearly a year in a house that cost less than 70k and have been happy, and touch wood we haven't had any problems.

I will be interested to see what other people suggest too.

Crookes is good for students.. It's a good area, loads of shops, good pubs and is on possibly THE most reliable bus route in Sheffield, ie the 52 route.

Not sure whether it's within your budget though.

I guess you haven't house hunted for a while - This is about as cheap as you will get in Crookes

2 Bed Mid Terrace - 115k - heading towards twice the OPs budget after a traditional Sheffield bidding war. ;)

See the thing is i dont agree with most people that say "oh no don't do that" when you mention getting a home near a council estate.

I lived in northolt (london) in a council flat for 14 years and not once did i have ANY sort of problems at all, sure there where the odd trouble makers but i just ignored them and didn't get involved.

If firthpark is anything like northolt then i would consider getting the two bedroom place there.

The reason im looking for somewhere between meadow hall and uni is because i train at Brenden Ingles boxing gym every day and have to go uni 4 days a week.

there are a few homes for sale cheap in wincobank but from what i have heard its not the greatest area.

Thank for the reply by the way guys, every time you call the agents they claim every areas is the best so it's nice to get honest answers.

I think Wincobank is meant to be a lot better than it used to be. I know people who have lived there and never had any trouble. It's quite a way to town by bus from there though I think. Although if you were close enough to Meadowhall the tram from there doesn't take too long and it goes right by Shef Uni.

Hi there,

the area around Bredans gym is Wincobank, and a bit further on you've got Brightside. You can still get a terrace round here for 70k ish. I've lived here for nearly 9 years very peacefully and I like it just fine. I've never had any trouble at all.

Good luck with your house hunting

I've lived in Heely (s2) area for nearly 3 years now, never had an ounce of trouble and I live on a council estate- most houses have now been bought off council by tennants and although prices have gone up slightly, my house (tho I don't want to move- its my dads place officially) is on the market for just under 80 and I think people are put of by the reputation of nearby manor.

It is a great location- 15 mins either way to town/meadowhall. I think its about 3 miles out with bus and trams very near- and when I move I'll still want a house in the same area!!
