I don't have a lot of experience of vets, we've been fortunate enough not to need them on a regular basis. One of our cats fell ill in May of last year though when we were in Peterborough and was diagnosed with a tumour in her lung. When we came up to Sheffield we had to find a new vets and PV came recommended on the forum and was near to us in Woodseats.
Today we had the unpleasant task of taking Ansi Fat-Cat to the vets to help her on her way. The tumour had grown to the extent that even purring was too much work for her. She couldn't walk 3 meters without struggling to breathe (roughly 3-4 times as fast as her sister Asci Thin-Cat - aka Kat Moss), and we had taken to carrying her to her dinner so she could eat. She looked distressed most of the time, and I guess she couldn't work out why her body wasn't working the way it used to be. Even tuna wasn't enough to encourage her to eat so we took the decision to ease her pain. Still not sure I did the right thing.
Anyway, PV I felt were very understanding and compassionate given they had a 100kgs of 40yr old bloke blubbering in front of them. We stayed with her to the end, stroked and talked and the nurse did the same - you don't feel so daft when you're with like minded people. It was all over in seconds, and Ans didn't seem distressed at all
.
Next to a close relatives death, this was one of the most painful experiences I've been through, and I don't think it could have been handled any better. I'm going to have a drink to Ansi Fat-Cat tonight because I feel awful. This is right up there with a recent family suicide and I never expected it to be so.
