I think that's the only reliable way of doing it.

What would help, as always, would be more info as to what you have as no-one has any idea how to make it faster without knowing what it is. Having said that though, even if I knew what you had now my answer would still be - upgrade.

tbh the only way to get a faster internet connection is to live in the best areas with the best cables, exchange etc, have the best made cables to your computer, a good modem.

I dont really fancy the idea of these "new" makes your internet faster apps.....i think all they really do is cache webpages you visit for next time and compress pages to dowload faster, but when your downloading a video or an mp3 i dont think theyre gonna comress too much and wont download too much faster.

also make sure your computer works faster generally, defrag, get rid of unwanted apps, junk, files, stop programs starting at start up you dont need.

remember to backup your registry before attempting anything tho ;)
