Hi,

I'm looking for a printer that is cheap to run. I will only be using mono printing so B&W only is fine. The ideal winner of this contest will have cheap cartridges and get lots of pages out of those cartridges. Ideally the initial outliay on the printer itself would be no more than £50 if possible.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Might be pushing a 50 purchase price, but I'd look for a cheap laser if you are just wanting mono.

yeh cheap black laser printers are about your best bet. Failing that get an Epson ( most sub £50 ) because you can pick 3rd party carts up for less than a quid, or buy a CIS ink system for £30 with ink and it lasts me 14month.

Ebuyer generally have Samsung mono lasers for £50, sometimes with free delivery.

Replacement toner will cost about 2/3 the cost of the printer (go to cartridge world and have it refilled for cheap), but you're talking about thousands of pages worth of printing.

For mono, it works out much cheaper - and looks much more professional -than using a cheap inkjet with dodgy cheap inks on bog standard cartridge paper :gag:

I've had my Samsung for three years and have yet to replace the toner. And I've printed a lot of things.....

I echo mr chris's comments.
My Samsung (cheap £50 job from ebuyer) bleated 18 months ago about being out of toner.
I simply removed the drum, gave it a gentle shake and it's been happy since.
With a 10 and 6 yr old in the house we have lots of printing going on.

I'll have a nosey on there later, I did think that I would be better off going for the laser printer but wasn't sure if that was being extravagent.

You really are. I use my (admittedly huge) A2+ inkjet for printing proofs and photos and my Samsung for letters and invoices. If I kept printing invoices on my Epson, it'd cost me a fortune in ink, and not look terribly good...

Still, if you want a decent economy of scale, you need to pay a lot more up front. Here's a needless breakdown.

My previous inkjet was an Epson 2400 A3+, now the printer itself was fine, but the ink tanks were tiny - around 12-14ml of ink for £12-£14 a shot, so £1/ml. The printer cost £550 when I bought it. There was also the issue of having two types of black ink (photo black and matte black) and having to switch out the cartridges depending on the paper used. This used up a lot more ink because any black ink in the lines had to be flushed out.

You could do about 2 decent A3 prints and change blacks a few times before the ink ran out. Fitting a new cartridge would also force a head clean and therefore needlessly expend more ink.

It was - literally - money down the drain.

My current inkjet is an A2+ Epson 3800. This cost £700, comes with 80ml ink tanks that are £35ish each and so works out at 43p or so per ml of ink. It also has both blacks installed at once, and switching between them also uses much less ink. Well, about 3ml or so... nothing terrible. It also comes with software for monitoring ink usage, which is incredibly handy for working out costs per print.

I've had the printer for 6 months now, I think. I'm barely halfway down on most of the cartridges and have printed more full quality photographs than I can remember.

I couldn't be happier.

You really have to choose the best tool for the job. A mono inkjet you need - a mono inkjet you buy! And the current Samsungs are even better than the one I picked up three years ago!

£42, can't say fairer than that! Replacement toner is £42 for a genuine Samsung toner, but you'll be able to get it less than that. Also, new printers come with less toner than a new full cartridge, so it's not that much of a rip!

Epson C46 is a decent printer, and we got a cis for £15.00, been a life saver :)

It is generally cheaper to go to a printing company and get them to print for you- especially if it's B&W- No initial outlay and can work out as cheap as 10p per print. No contest really and most will print from disk. Check out dspad.co.uk/print.htm
They're in Walkley. Don't know where you are, but they are only a small business.

I'd also recommend the Samsung. I've got one - about five years old - and only on it's second toner.

Epson printers = scam.

Google the E-90 error message fault. Epson build a counter into their machines which needs sending back for a repair. Obviously the repair costs more than a new printer!

Don't forget transport costs/postage and lack of convenience. 10p per print? Not that cheap.

Based on a £40 toner printing 2000 sheets (£5 per 500 sheets A4) I've got running costs at 3p per sheet*. Now toners print a lot more than that, and paper can go as low as £4 per pack for 500 sheets....

*admittedly I'm doing maths at 5.44am....

a common fault to is full waste ink pad sponge that are located in the rear. They get soaked and then spill crap around inside the printer. There is a quick and simple fix by using any old pots like yogurt pots.

If you have a Epson printer a strongly recommend downloading SSC Service Tool , it's free and work better than the supplied Epson one.

Epson SSC doesn't work with my DX6050, is there any other software that might sort it?

I bought a lazer printer from PACES, pack horse lane, High green. its a charity that sells and repares pc's for kids with MS i think.

anyhow, like I say, if you want a good second hand one and want your money to go to a good cause, then look them up on google.

had the same e90 message with my dx6050 that stopped everything including scanning. found a solution that worked.
turn unit on then press and hold maintenence, stop and the on button for about 15secs. the display went blank then restarted and all was well
