View Full Version : Wossy to keep £6,000,000 job after suspension lifted in January

Jonathan Ross is set to keep his job as a BBC presenter, despite the Andrew Sachs obscene phone calls scandal, after the corporation's governing body agreed the "right action" had been taken against him.

The BBC Trust, which has published its report on the controversy, said the calls were "grossly offensive" and there was no justification for broadcasting them.

It said the material broadcast on Russell Brand's Radio 2 show last month was a "deplorable intrusion" into the private lives of Sachs and his granddaughter, Georgina Baillie.

But Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons said the BBC's director general had taken the right action with regard to Ross, who was suspended without pay for three months.

He said: "We have underlined very clearly that it is not the job of the Trust to make decisions about the terms and conditions of performers or the sanctions that are applied to them when they are found to be wanting.

"We are very clear that the director general has taken the right action with respect to Jonathan Ross."

Ross, who was involved in the broadcast, is due to return to his £6 million-a-year job when his current period of suspension without pay ends in January.

The Trust said there was no "editorial justification" and no "informed consent obtained" for airing the messages, which were left on the answering machine of the Fawlty Towers actor.

BBC trustee Richard Tait said there were three failures: to exercise editorial control, to follow established compliance systems and a failure of judgment in taking editorial decisions.

But he said the Trust considered the BBC's response to the controversy to be appropriate.

Thoughts?

My thoughts, in "family friendly" wording so as I don't draw the ire of Management, is that he's an overrated, overpaid numpty, and anyone else who had said HALF of what he's got away with on air, would be sacked on the damn SPOT! At least his mate Russell Brand had the good grace to resign, perhaps Ross aught to think about doing the same, but we all know he won't... More's the pity   :loopy:

That's exactly what the Daily Mail was saying when the scandal first broke. I'm glad that you've found a newspaper that has the same views as you!

Sometimes people do really stupid things. It will follow him forever but the rest of us will just carry on and watch his show like we used to.

I assume that Ross is not actually employed by the BBC.

It is more likely that his production companies have contracts to supply various TV and Radio shows.

The devil will be in the detail of such contracts. If they have not been drawn up tightly enough it may be impossible for the BBC to break a contract without massive financial penalty.

You should be aware that one of his companies has already been compensated for losses incurred by the suspension of his radio show.
The same may have applied to other shows.

Probably none, like most people he probably thinks people have got their panties in FAR too big a bunch over the whole matter.

The BBC will probably keep an eye on him though, to make sure he doesn't do anything even remotely like it again, and according to a report from before his suspension, he's on "final warning" when he comes back, so he so much as says "boo!" to the wrong person and he's out on his ear.

Don't get too excited, it's a never-to-be-seen-again, once in a lifetime experience.

Under normal circumstances I reckon the Daily Fail is EVIL, EVIL I tell you!

I'm looking forward to his coming back especially as his guests will be Russell Brand and Andrew Sachs.

Don't believe me? Well why not: It's obvious that Mr Ross is bigger than the BBC because they didn't have the back bone to sack him.

The BBC are as spineless as this government.

And if there's any justice, they'll sack him on the SPOT if he so much as looks sideways at "Manuel"

At least it's good news for Four Poofs And A Piano. I wonder what they've been having to do to make ends meet while Wossy's been suspended? :o

That would rule! Deep irony!

I like them both. And Wossy must come back because I want him on Film 2009 to review Watchmen!

I look forward to the Johnathon Ross back on our screens. I resent the fact the BBC are showing crap repeated films on the late Friday slot rather than the JR show that all us license payers have paid so much for. Maybe we should be complaining to the BBC about that.

Very clever work by the BBC - did anyone listen to the Ball and Baker radio show on Saturday? They're deliberately making this slot so bad that people are desperate for Ross to return.
