The Dustbin Men 1968
The Dustbinmen started out as a play, screened a year before the first series and written for a seven-week run of single dramas broadcast by Granada under the generic title The System. Jack Rosenthal drew his characters from real-life refuse-collectors he had met while out and about conducting research, and he set his play in the Lancashire coastal town of Fylde, near Blackpool. The foul-mouthed, beret-wearing Cheese and Egg - so nicknamed because CE were his initials, and also, incongruously, those of the Church of England - was the foreman and acknowledged 'leader of the gang', respected by the others for his brains. Joining him a la cart were Heavy Breathing (so named because he believed he had a way with women), Eric (a dim-wit), Smellie (so named because he stank) and Winston (an ardent Manchester City supporter). They could barely stand the sight (or smell) of each other but their common enemy was the Corporation Cleansing Department, and in particular its new inspector, whom they nicknamed Bloody Delilah. (In the pilot this part was played by Frank Windsor; in the first series it was another Z Cars star, John Woodvine.) Driving around in their dustcart, which they named Thunderbird 3, the collectors flouted every rule, shirked work whenever possible, and discussed (usually disparagingly) local residents by their address or some other recognisable feature, hence 'Mrs 23 Valetta Street', 'Mrs 14b Kimberley Terrace', 'Mrs 24 The Alley' or 'Mrs Manchester United'.
Winston was Gerry Booth in Coronation Street.
Tosh13, you've brought it all flooding back, but how on earth do you remember such detail?
If you ask jeeves the dustbin men then a bbc archive comes up,I do remember most of them & Tony Hancock,Morcambe & Wise, Etc.I enjoyed the dustbinman Winston Man City Supporter (Gerry Booth) his saying was pigging this & pigging that Summerbee is a God.There were some great programs back then & we had less channels ,we have over 100 channels & it's full of rubbish, best to remenice about the good old comedies.Cheers

Bushbaby 07-06-2005, 16:51 I really loved "Do Not Adjust Your Set"
It was a precursor to Python, aimed specifically at kids, and also starred David Jason.
Each week there was a musical set from the Bonzos, and I can still conjure up an image of Neil Innes singing "Equestrian Statue".

oopspardon 09-06-2005, 14:01 There's a good site called TV Cream, that includes descriptions of nearly every programme ever shown on British TV as well as (in some cases) cast lists, theme tunes and movie clips. I've just downloaded the theme to Jamie and the Magic Torch!
The people behind the TV Cream website (who are very witty indeed in my humble opinion) have just published a book. Not seen it yet - it only came out this week I think - but if it's up to their usual standards it should be quality rather than the usual rip-off bandwagon nostalgia sh*te you see around.
Open all hours,Ronnie Barker,David Jason,
Two Ronnies, Morcombe and Wise, Not the nine o clock news,David Frost , Milly martin. Beyond the fringe, Peter Cook, Dudly Moore
i love the tv cream site.http://www.tv.cream.org/
i like to reminisce through all the old theme songs of what i watched as a child.
How about Tony Hancock, Hancocks half hour? Most of the galton & simpson stuff was pretty good to watch.
what about the talkin horse [mr edd and it's owner Willbur]

lazyherbert 04-12-2007, 18:01 What about the Man From Laramie & Rawhide.YaHo:hihi:
I agree with a previous post re 'Open All Hours'. Brilliant that. Living with a houseful of 20 somethings in 1968 in Plymouth, we all used to sit round and guffaw at 'The Magic Roundabout'. How puerile. 'Boing!' said Zebedee. 'Be quiet' said Brian.
Anyone remember Gideon's Way, police drama starring John Gregson, I used to love it. The Army Game (follow Flogger!), Bootsie and Snudge with Alfie Bass and Bill Fraser.
I can still remember the Saturday evenings, all of us kids sitting in front of the coal fire with our packets of Spangles and sucking all the salt out of the little blue bags from our Smiths crisps, bliss.
hillsbro 05-12-2007, 21:48 The pretty girl was called Ellie May. I think the banker was Mr Drysdale, but I cannot remember his secretaries name.
The secretary was Miss Jane Hathaway (she had a crush on Jethro). She was played by Nancy Kulp - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Kulp
