That's awfully quick CS :o

I'm using Windows XP which apparently takes longer than other Operating Systems to boot :?
Mine takes about 60 secs.

Funny that, Microsoft reckon that XP is the quickest starter to date.

Everyones circumstances will be different so this is a useless idea tbh moon. My PC takes ages but then there's various things on mine that startup in the background as Windows starts and it's a fairly old PC. My laptop has different stuff on it but starts quicker as it's a faster processor and has more memory.

Although we could contimue and find an average start time we wouldn't actually have achieved anything.

there are varius ways to improve boot up speed, but I'm too tired to explain...

mine takes quite a while... the biggest time hog is when my IDE controller card is setting up the 2 DVD drives and the HD connected to it... damn thing... then again, I have allsorts installed on my PC and a lot of things that load at startup...

memory hogs like my development suite etc... lol

Mine takes about 60 secs. Aye, XP is very slow to boot, even slowler to shut down (you must know XP's infamous, "shut down, saving settings" message).

But yeh, I'm happy of all the stuff I've uninstalled and barred to get my PC quicker, and I don't have XP :gag:
hehehe :)

Lurch: I dunno where Ms got their data, but think about it, it can't be, there's too much stuff to load.

I like this thread coz It eminds me of my old IBM PS1 PC, which took abaat a minute and a half to boot.
Then in 2000, I was like showing off to me buddies, telling them my PC booted in 30 seconds, that was Celeron 466 with 128MB of Ram, speed of light !

A fresh install of XP (even the one I've been running now for a few months) starts quicker in my experience than the previous versions of windows (not that I've ever run anything pre-2000 on a processor faster than 400mhz, like). Also much faster than various linux distros on this machine. It can take a while to shut down as processes have a habit of hanging in the background.

I'm sure it's all down to the services and applications that start up with it.

Don't get me wrong, I quite agree. I was just pointing out how much ******** Microsoft spout out. IME, a clean install of XP is quicker than a clean install of 2000 but once you start updating Windows and installing apps then it suddenly slows right down and continues to do so the more you do with it, whereas 2000 just slows down a bit and then seems happy at a particular speed and stays there. I've also found that XP, because it thinks it's cleverer than you and never does what you tell it to, doesn't shut anything down properly and just sits there acting thick.

I hate XP btw.

Only in its default configuration. You can soon give it a smack down with tweak UI and such.

Right, I did exagerate earlier, I retimed it with my wrist watch, my PC actually starts in 24 seconds. Sorry for missleading you.

Mmmmh 15 seconds, what was I thinking of... at 8 seconds Raid is still searching... :D my bad ;)

So I've heard, but what's the point. There's nothing wrong with 2000 so I'll stick with that.

Anyone else that randomly posts their startup time without listing all their installed applications, current level of patching, exact hardware spec and favourite colour etc... is a complete tit.

Thankyou.

I'm not having a go at you. You may as well have asked "how long does it take you to get to your front door and back again"? There isn't any point to collating the average times of how long it takes someone to get there and back as everyones circumstances are entirely different.

My laptop takes a different length of time to bot up every time, it depends which OS I boot into, how long it takes me to select an option from the boot menu, how long it takes me to press Ctrl Alt Del and type my password, whether anything updates itself before letting the OS finish booting up or shutting down.

I could go on, and probably will.

Gosh I cannot believe people are counting how log it takes to load a pc.

I am glad I read this thread though, as I would have not come cross VIDSTER`s website and the tips on Firefox browser were brill, it is much faster and nice not to have loads fo windows open as well, all in one browser.

Doesn't hurt to clean up your files now and then. Symentic Norton has pretty good file maintenance for XP. Every time I use AOL, the caches get loaded up so I clean them out as I shut down. I defrag once every two weeks whether it needs it or not. XP is a lot faster than Windows 98.

Nope, not quite.

More info, if you could copy and paste your complete registry, installed programs list and possibly even set up an open access VPN then I'd be happy that the required info to is there to make the numbers mean something.

No one is randomly posting it, they are posting it in reply to a simple question.

If your PC hangs about in the DOS System check screen when you first turn on it's likely you have your Hard drive and CD rom cables plugged in the wrong way around. The end that plugs into the motherboard are generally colour coded on new PCs but it's always worth checking if your PC takes ages to get past this screen.
