View Full Version : Rubbish pub quiz
ellielambert 19-11-2008, 10:48 Hi,
Without meaning to become one of those traditional moaners I just wanted to make you all aware of how rubbish the Lescar pub quiz is.
Myself and a group of friends went their last night and were really disappointed with the standard / style of the quiz. There were massive gaps between the questions, a round which included questions about the quizmaster and his girlfriend and the quizmaster insisted on getting all of his mates up to sing the answers to the lyrics round. Despite it only being 5 rounds long it took two and a half hours to complete.
Also we found out that the Lescar won 'Best Traditional Pub' at the Exposed Awards, since when did a bar that sells Peroni and wasabi peas constitute traditional?!
Anyway rant over!
If anyone knows of any decent quizzes around the Ecclesall / Broomhill / City centre area please let me know.
Thanks,
Ellie
goldenfleece 19-11-2008, 10:50 The Broomhill Tavern does a good quiz Mondays AND Tuesdays.........been to it a few times and its usually very packed....
bluemonday 19-11-2008, 11:46 If you can go up to Crookes, the Cobden View quiz on Sundays and Tuesdays is good

I think that is 'traditional pub' as in 'not a trendy wine bar' - otherwise the winner would be whomsoever was only serving mead in pewter tankards.
I like it there, although the quiz sounds a little self-indulgent from what you have said!
Merry_Legs 19-11-2008, 12:03 Lescar has no atmosphere anymore - we did Quizgo at Porter Brook a couple of weeks ago, took about an hour and won a bottle of wine, plus they do Strongbow on draft :)
The University Arms near the Children's Hospital does a quiz on Thursdays, I've never been as I'm usually at work round at the Hallamshire then, so I can't vouch for how good it is, given the location though it'll probably be full of students/health proffessionals.
The Prince of Wales on Ecclesall Road South does a pub quiz on wednesday I think. Its a standard 20 question general knowledge one, I much prefer these to the quizgo/noughts and crosses type quiz.
gnikojm'i 19-11-2008, 13:53 a quiz on a Tuesday, its the bingo type quiz. i didnt really like it, a grid of 25 squares, all with random numbers in from 1 to 25, 25 general knowledge questions get asked, (which are fine, quite a good mixture of hard and easy) but then they read the answers out and the winner is the first team to get a line........a team won the last time i was in that only answered 7 questions right! my team had 21 and another team had 23, but as they were lucky enough to get a line first they won, made me think "what was the point"! still if you like a quiz to boil down to luck, then this may be the quiz for you.
ch.clark 19-11-2008, 14:07 The red deer in town have a quiz on tuesday and sunday they start about 9pm
The Plough at Sandtgate has a nice quiz on Sunday nights, with a sampling of free food thrown in too.
youngblood 19-11-2008, 14:24 The Fox & Duck does a good quiz on a sunday it's very funny!!
a little out of the way but the chantry in woodseats does a quiz on a Tuesday, its the bingo type quiz. i didnt really like it, a grid of 25 squares, all with random numbers in from 1 to 25, 25 general knowledge questions get asked, (which are fine, quite a good mixture of hard and easy) but then they read the answers out and the winner is the first team to get a line........a team won the last time i was in that only answered 7 questions right! my team had 21 and another team had 23, but as they were lucky enough to get a line first they won, made me think "what was the point"! still if you like a quiz to boil down to luck, then this may be the quiz for you.
Sounds the same as the Robin Hood in Stannington's quiz.
I'd be going tonight if I wasn't ill.
KJ_VENOM 19-11-2008, 14:40 Theres my multi-media quiz on thursdays at The Nelson Rock Bar in town, starts at 8.30
(and yes i do know using multi-media is a redundant phrase as the word media is already a plural) :hihi: :P
The red deer in town have a quiz on tuesday and sunday they start about 9pm
Yes, thats a good quiz
I wouldn't dream of going to a pub that didn't serve me free wasabi peas

The quiz is usually good fun, the week you are referring too was the quiz masters 21st birthday so it was a bit different. The batteries in his mic were on the way out which is why there were gaps. It's usually a good laugh.
pissartist 26-11-2008, 00:45 I regularly attend the lescar pub quiz and feel abliged to respond to the negative comments left about said quiz. The week refurd to previously was the quiz masters 21st birthday and having spoken to him i established that he had intended to make the quiz shorter than normal so that he could go celebrate his birthday with his friends. unfortunatly due to technical faults and some miss communication the night went badly. I spoke to him afterwoods and he said that the evening was ruined by someone insisting on trying to make the quiz about him and another bar members birthday. The reverance made about the quiz master making the quiz about him and his girlfriend refered to a connections round in which on the one off (his birthday) he had himself as the connection but all the questions were general knowledge based and he made the connection as obvious as possible. problems with the mic were expereinced this week as well as last which unfortunatly led to the quiz being cancelled due to the fact that there was a spoken word performance in the function room which would have been ruined had the quiz master not insisted on canceling for the sake of said perfomance. over all I feel the quiz is often very entertaining and although it has its technical faults is obvoisly worked hard on and diserves some good reviews. its packed full of things to do including a puzzles page and bonus points for singing during the scoring of the song lyrics round (something that is enjoyed by everyone not just the 'quiz masters mates') easily worth 2 quid
tomlescar 26-11-2008, 01:15 as the lescar quiz master i was informed tonight about some negative comments about the quiz and as much as i apprecaite the positive comments left i feel i should respond. i appreciate that the fact that last weeks quiz didnt go as planned. I have been experiencing some tech. difficulties recently that have meant the quiz hasnt gone very smoothly.
I must apologise for the quiz being canceled tonight and for disturbing the spoken word performance held in the lescar this evening. There were some negative posts about the performance being interupted and must take resposnability for that. Hopefully it didnt ruin the evening too much as it was not my intentions to interupt the last show.
As of next week the quiz will be running as normal until the christmas break so feel free to come down. It is 2pounds a team with a 30 pound bar tab to be one as well as other prizes. I do work very hard on the quiz and appreciate anyones envolvment but if anyone has any comments about it i do come round at the end and ask how everyone found it so feel free to talk to me then. I'd rather hear it then than find out my hard work has been put down on a forum.

... but takes far too long (for those of us that aren't arsed about the quiz).
The World Famous Harley Quiz is back for 1 night only on Sunday 7th Dec. Anyone who has been will tell you it's not one to miss. It puts pub quizes in a whole new light!!!

That's a very admiral response Tom. I don't know you and I've never been to the Lescar quiz, but hope all goes well in future. Don't let a one off problem, or whingers on the forum put you off.
