Me n the missus are spending next week in the Lake District, I've never been up that way before (always thought it was in Scotland) and I'm looking for a few places to go and things to do. We've booked into a caravan site just south of keswick but may change sites after a couple of days to see a different area. Gonna get some good walking and pubbing in and also want to do some boating. If you’re been before and found somewhere great or somewhere to absolutely keep away from let me know.

When i'm up there i like to I wander lonely as a cloud that floats on high o'er vales and hills, when all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; beside the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine and twinkle on the milky way, they stretched in never-ending line along the margin of a bay: it was amazing, ten thousand saw I at a glance, tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

After that we popped down to grassmere where we saw the waves beside them danced; but they out-did the sparkling waves in glee: a poet could not but be gay, in such a jocund company: I gazed--and gazed--but little thought what wealth the show to me had brought:

Even to this day when at home in Sheffield I oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, they flash upon that inward eye which is the bliss of solitude; and then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with the daffodils.

To be more 'helpful' just enjoy the scenery, it is another Eden out there.

Go for a boat trip on Derwent Water - they leave from Keswick regularly.

If you're down Lake Windermere way I'd recommend you go for a ride on the Lakeside - Haverthwaite railway (steam trains). The pub in Haverthwaite does good pub grub and keeps a decent pint.

Also if you're down that end you can cross Lake Widermere on the car ferry from Sawrey.

.

I'll second that. There are about 6 landing stages dotted around the lake so depending upon your appetite for walking you are always guaranteed a launch back.

Don't do Cat Bells on a Bank Holiday week though, there are more people on that route than will be at Meadowhall. If you you look up from the boat you will see them all following in chain like fashion just like thousands of ants :loopy: .

If you like something less commercialised go for Coniston Water or Buttermere. Another beautiful lake side walk is round Ullswater. Park at Howtown, walk up the hill to the little church, walk around the lake to Glenridding and catch the launch back.

How I envy you. I have to wait until October for my break up there.

Catch the Lall Ratty (think its called) teeny weeny steam train up to Boot, then wander round the village (both pubs do excellent food & drink), then wander up to the waterfalls (nice gentle walk after a big lunch).

Also, go up to the top of Hardknott pass to look at the Roman Fort, and some of the best scenery in the country!

If you're in the car and fancy a challenging and exciting drive, do the Hardknott Pass. It runs from Ambleside to Ravenglass on the Cumbrian coast and is one of the most fantastic roads I've ever driven on.

Just do a search on Google for "Hardknott Pass" - there are countless sites about it, all of which speak in awe. You simply cannot go to the Lakes without a trip across it - make sure you take your camera!

Check out the pencil factory in Keswick too - if it's still there. Haven't been to the Lakes in about 6/7 years now! Last time I was there was with my dad hunting for a yacht... never found one - at least one that didn't have Osmosis!

Ha ha. Thats funny. I've been going to the lakes for the last 25 years (i'm 26 = not got round to going this year yet) and we always used to say when it was raining "well there's always the pencil factory". It never did rain hard enought to make us go tho.

The lake district is amazing.

I wouldn't worry too much about finding stuff to do. The place your staying will have an array of info. on activities etc. or failing that the local shop/post office will.

There's loads of stuff to do depending on your ability to travel, but at the end of your day of fun you can always be sure to find a brilliant pub with great ales and food....and friendly people to boot....enjoy:)

Keswick boasts pitch n putt, hireable rowing boats, the launch that goes round the lake, nice pubs/restaurants, a terrible night club.

BUT forget all that, walk up one of those beautiful mountains. they may look big but when you get to the top you will be taken aback by stupendous views!

Will be leaving for the lakes this evening, cant wait for some down time. Got a crappy train journey to deal with to get there. 4 n a half hours and 4 changes, bummer.

The missis went up yesterday and set the caravan up, she says the site is ace with stunning views.

I'm back next weekend, I'll let all you peeps know what I got up to...

Thanks for all the tips,

Dave H
