Well , it is a fascinating problem but you'll need professional advice on this one , I'm afraid.
If you look through the Yellow Pages or a Local Services book , you might find what you're looking for under , "Soot Removers " or , "Stain Removers ".
I don't know if they do Home Visits but you could ask , for nothing.
I know , from personal experience , that there is nothing so annoying as soot-stained stone. I used to wince every time I looked towards the fire when my stones were affected. My late uncle eventually just covered them over as there was no , "Yellow Pages " in those days !
Good luck and good stain removing !

When we got our heathstone from a local stone quarry we had to buy a special sealant to use on the stone whilst it was clean.

Now we wash the stone with hot water and soap and a scrubbing brush.

Real Fire are so worth the hassel of cleaning them

i dont really have much knowledge of cleaning etc but have u tried vinegar? may sound odd but my mate smashed a bottle on the floor and the stone came out so clean afterwards! smells a bit but really does the job for cleaning . worth a shot anyway , and cheap
