View Full Version : What's firth park and shiregreen like?
Hi
I was wondering if anyone could tell what kind of area park and shiregreen is??
Thinking of renting a place there, currently live on london road and not too impressed.
Im looking for a quiet place with a few shops close by, the place im looking at (firth park) is 2.5miles from meadowhall and 3 miles from city centre so it's not bad.
It depends what you are after. I am from South Shefield but spend a lot of time in Firth Park, Shiregreen and Fir Vale with my job.
If you want quiet then I am not sure if these areas are for you. Yes they are away from the city centre, BUT they have their own issues aswell. Very large housing developments which often were largely Council Housing. They may look leafy suburbs but they have a far rougher undertone than a cursory look might provide and there are some tough so and so's that have come off these estates.
Some of the pubs can be a bit giddy (The Sicey, The Firth Park Hotel etc.) yet The Pheasant at Sheffield Lane Top has always been a popular pub and with local shops and amenities there, it isn't a bad spot. Easy access to the M1 and Meadowhall too.
It all depends on your requirements.
I don't think you should expect anything more from these areas than London Road however. They may be a step down form what you already know!
Thank u for the reply

This has really made me think twice about it. I spent all my life (im 22 now) in council estates and living at the bottom of london road is a nice change as there isn't a council estate close to me.
But if firth park is a council estate area then i will seriously reconsider (was even thinking of getting a mortage on a house there), the one thing i cant stand are these 14-15 year olds who think they run the world and are cocky, thats the best change i have had moving here.
Anyway, any other views on these areas would be appreciated.
Hi,
Sorry same view as the first a lot of wannabes and know-it-alls !!!
:(
A lot of the houses at Shiregreen are very old fashioned and for some reason have never been modernised.
Ahhh, Sheffield Brightside!
According to the BBC during the election this is the second most "working class" (meaning scabby, I think!) constituency in the country.
David Blunkett's contribution to society, 2nd lowest number of skilled workers and professions, 2nd highest number of council houses!
There are some nice roads, but they are surrounded by scabby ones!
Use extreme caution.
Well the house i ws going to actually consider taking a mortage on has now been "suspended from the market" with out reason.
Thank you for your help, MUCH APPRECIATED.
Its a real shame, there was a really nice house for 60k 2 bed room, looked great but if thats what the area is like then i wont be looking at it again (im a student and since i'll be here for another 6 years why waste money on rent when i'll pay around 30k in rent).
So are there any areas where people can recomend a place to buy???
Ideally it would be between meadowhall and city centre (sheffield uni).
Thanks again.
As with all areas of Sheffield they have there problems. But it isn't as bad as the picture thats painted on some of these posts.
Certain parts are very well cared for and alot of tenants and residents take great pride in where they live.
I live on lower Shiregreen and have on and off for 35 years.
London road whilst not obviously council (the blocks of flats are) is predominantly private rented .The landlords aren't that good at upkeep and it also has its fair share "scabby" people ,so not quite a step down!
The benefit of these areas is like you said cheap houses, all I would say is check the area thoroughly .you might end up with a bargain.
Good luck
I agree with jayjay some of us take great pride of how our gardens and houses look on the Shiregreen and yes the estate is being modernised. So being working class means you are scabby hey Bourne so what are you middle class and from a posh part of Sheffield?
Got to agree with Jon there, mate. Rather a snobby comment, or that's the way it came across.
Easy guys, actually I live just down the road from you, Jon.
Like I said there are some nice roads in S5. I'm sure you're not scabby, neither are my neighbours, and hopefully neither am I.
BUT this isn't the nicest part of town, and when someone asks for your advice you have to be honest. It's very easy to get stuffed on a bad street here and when that happens and you want to move you can find yourself stuck.
This end of Sheffield has been let down for generations by Blunkett and his ilk, I'm very angry with them and their loony policies, but that's probably a discussion for another time.
