Stockers 17-11-2008, 10:21 not wanting to live in the past but it was a great day..............the first league meeting between United and Wednesday in quite a few years, Wednesday were red hot favourites, the rest as they say, is history;
Blades 2-0 Pigs
Whitehouse (Sheridan and Warhurst collide)
Deane (mid the Gap!!)
having seen us lose to Wednesday in the Zenith Data Cup a couple of seasons earlier it was a sweet day at school the next day, especially as i was born and raised in Pigsville itself; Stocksbridge.
Ousetunes 17-11-2008, 10:37 I got well hammered that day, knocking back 14 pints in celebratory fashion.
I remember sitting on the Kop when Deano's goal rolled in and the lad beside me saying 'We're gonna do 'em'. Wendy had a decent side in those days and Carlton Palmer struck the crossbar early on.
I think I was still hungover the following Wednesday but I wore a smile on my mug until, well, we battered them at their own place. "Bobby, Bobby, Bobby Davison!!"
F. Sidebottom 17-11-2008, 10:39 ...... and Carlton Palmer struck the crossbar early on.
......injuring at least a dozen blades who were busily crawling out of the woodwork that day.

With some of the muppets sat in the Kop i think you might be right, they'd be happier at Hillsborough, at least they'd be in good company slagging the Blades off after 10 minutes.

Obsessed with what exactly?
My first derby match at the Lane was a very special one, just can't believe it was 17yrs ago.
As for 1979, i was 2 so it doesn't hold any memories for me and Wembley was gutting but Andy Linighans last minute header and Pigs fans blubbering at the Final whistle sort of healed the wounds a long time ago. If you'd have gone on to win the FA Cup i'd have been gutted.

3rd division play off final, oh ay i forgot about that, i think i was washing the car that afternoon along with most of the country.
As for not been good enough for Automatic Promotion, you're not telling me anything i don't know. We were taught a lesson by Reading in the first half on Saturday and didn't look half as good as them. Things got better in the second half for us but the match was over by then.

League 1 actually stockers, don't go all old school on me when it suits you kid, my first sheffield derby was in 1970 but we lost that one so I don't care for it much, just remember being stood nearer the cricket pavilion than the pitch ! Later young man I'm off to work now, have a nice day !

That was my first Sheffield derby as well ...King Tudor through Peter Grummits legs and its 3-2 Blades
My 2nd Sheffield derby was the 0-0 snore draw at The Sty and another point on the way to promotion ;)
Must admit we've come along way with BDTBL since those cricket pitch days, gone from one of the worst grounds ever to one of the best but, unlike the Esat Bank we did have a roof over our heads.
Stockers 17-11-2008, 13:03 King Tudor walked on the football pitch hurrah, hurrah

he scored a goal and that was it, the Shoreham Boys we had a fit,
and we all went crazy, when Tudor scored a goal!!

The league cup win must have hurt then. And Hopkins last minute scorcher in the play off final was karma. As a fellow Stocksbridge resident i sat in the Grouse with a load of one day only Blades watching that one. They don't half sup up quick.

Its no so bad these days up Stockers, most of the Pig fans i went to school with now seem to have 'other commitments' and haven't been to Hillsborough for years.
I moved out of the Valley quite a few years ago but still have family up there, no doubt we're probably related :hihi:
Growing up in Stocksbridge and being at the High School in the late 80's early 90's was a nightmare, though when Wednesday were relegated and the Blades were promoted it was quite sweet.
Wednesday had the better times during my Schooling life though we did have the bragging rights for the derby double in during the 91/92 season but 1993 was a nightmare.
I've no relatives in Stocksbridge mate.So we're not related.

No fair play to the Blades, they did take a decent following across the last time they were in Europe.
Mind you, they caused a bit of bother on the boat - they pulled the mast down and threw the cannon overboard :hihi:

canadablade 20-11-2008, 18:52 17 years ago I think owlgay was just being born
A couple of asides I recollect about that day, which as Stockers said was the first time the teams had been in the same division for a while, which may be of interest to anyone of the age CB has refered to.
Dave Bassett must have fed raw meat to the United players for about a month before, the way they approached the game, and it worked. They took on the old Wimbledon attitude of "never mind the ball, just get on with the game", and as Stockers said Sheridan and Warhurst were influenced the same way.
Trevor Francis said afterwards that a Sheffield derby hadn't got the same passion as A Glasgow one. He might have felt differently, if he'd got his team up for it.
There were a number of parallels with the first one last season, when the outcome was reversed.
Another aside, people were forced to buy tickets from the Lane as a two game package, including a game against Luton.
Don't know what all the other Wednesdayites did with their Luton tickets, but we collected about a dozen for the main stand, which we gave to the vicar at St Mary's (on the way home) to distribute amongst his flock.
He may have used them for his Christmas fete draw.
First prize one ticket, second priize two.... etc..
But if it allowed any older Unitedite in his congregation (who perhaps had been ought of work for a few years), to get a game in, then I wouldn't have begrudged it him.
Our sights were set higher at the time, and taking the lead in Kaiserlautern was probably the peak. we achieved.
It lasted about 40 seconds, before a fair tackle yards outside the box, was "rewarded" with a penalty for an equaliser.

I heard a rumour at the time of a Wednesday fan who bought tickets from the Lane and had about 10 Luton Tickets and set fire to them in the Car Park when he got out of the ticket office, i don't know how true this rumour was???
I recall us been a lot more fired up for it than Wednesday were, i think a few Wednesday players had it in their heads they only had to turn up.
After so long in the shadow of Wednesday it was a sweet moment, only matched by the night match at Hillsborough later in the season.
Going back to the match at the Lane i recall Wednesday been all over the place, King cleared one off the line into the back of Woods' head which nearly resulted in a goal.
I also recall a very strange moment when Tracey went down injured following a scrambled and he rolled the ball out for a corner, we all expected the resulting corner to come flying over but Sheridan just rolled it out for a goal kick to the Blades. I'm not sure you'd get that sort of sportsmanship in todays game??

I don't remember that, but he's a good honest lad.
I remember a few other Wednesday players putting corners behind the goal line (or more often straight onto the nearest defender's head) in my time, but the phrase "good sportsmanship" didn't come to mind!
If any of you paid over 50p for a grey market Luton ticket, you were robbed.
Regarding my previous two posts;
A message to all you Blades :-
See if you go to church, you may be rewarded.
And a message to myself:-
Never reply to Stockers' threads, when in a bad mood.. .....like I was yesterday afternoon.

If the rumour was true, let's hope he'd double checked that he'd sorted out which tickets were for which game correctly, then first!
It's the only time Luton Town have ever set a ticket office alight.
I'm not disagreeing with your second point, although we froze in other games including against Leeds as well that season, in games players needed some managing.
Just one other point in the light of other recent debate on here; I sat in the main stand for that game where it was effectively clearly unsegregated in view of the mix; and in all honestly I don't recollect any unsavoury incidents whatsoever in the crowd. (Only on the pitch!)

Jet Owl 72 23-04-2009, 12:39 The irony that the very same man/woman/pig accused me of living in the past and yet 5 months prior to that started this thread! :)
Even more ironic that I invited them to talk about any random win over us or winning the 4th division title and they have done just that albeit months before!
I, like no doubt thousands of Wednesdays fans will die having seen my team win a major trophy and actaully win the biggest derbies ie the Semi and Boxing Day and not see my team choke every team they HAVE to win.

Oh right, so because a (admittedly very good) fictional television comedy series makes a mistake, it becomes fact? Fact is Bla, er, I mean Dr , a qualified veterinary surgeon isn't a doctor.
