I'm currently updating my CV and would like to put a bit more emphasis on my retail experience, trouble is I've never worked in a shop so need to clarify whether other means of sales etc can be classified as retail? I have worked in a bar and also done sales for a software company, can these be used? Or is retail specifically shop work?

Thanks

No, retail is anything which involves selling stuff.

No it's not. It is very specifically the sale of goods from a specific location directly to, and for the consumption of, the consumer. I.e. a shop, on-line or high street.

So the sales I have done in the past and the bar work would not fall in to this category?

No but you don't have to mention the word retail in your CV but still tick off all the retail type buzzwords,e.g. customer facing roles, sales targets, negotiation skills, etc. If you can get hold of a retail application form, list the skills reqd and address them in your CV.

What I would be looking for is experience with customer service, housekeeping, record keeping, cash handling, banking, cashing up, stock control, merchandising - that sort of thing. Retail isn't just using a till, there is a lot more to it than that.

With regard to "buzz words", if I get a CV with buzzwords littered all over it it unlikely to end with an interview, I prefer to see a good command of the English language.

We have just recruited 2 new members of staff, one after asking for applicants on the Sheffield Forums. The amount of CVs we get that are nothing like the applicant is quite amazing!
