View Full Version : Remakes are they ever any good?
I'm waiting to see the remake of the The Day the Earth Stood Still
i'm hoping it will be great but i fear that as with so many remakes it will be so very very bad i could be reduced to tears!
So my question is this....
Has there ever been a good remake and if so what?
Beakerzoid 16-11-2008, 23:31 Off the top of my head...
Scarface
Dawn of the Dead
The Fly
Twelve Monkeys
Magnificent Seven
Cape Fear
Cyrano De Bergerac
Heat
Ocean's 11
Casino Royale
Little Shop Of Horrors
The Departed
Vanilla Sky
Fistful of Dollars
1984
3:10 To Yuma
The Birdcage
Bourne Identity
Some are remakes of Tv to movie (Bourne), some short film to feature (Twelve Monkeys), and some cross translation (Birdcage), and whilst only a few are actually better than their original versions, all are decent remakes in my opinion. I'm sure there are more, but that was all i could come up with at present.
i'll give you dawn of the dead, heat, casino royal, and scarface but do you think the Oceans 11 remake is better then the orignal?
i'm thinking films like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory vs Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, both good films but you cannot beat Gene Wilder's willy wonka!! thus making Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a rubish remake.
i liked the hills have eyes remakes

Yes, because the original is awful!
But even if it were not the case, Ocean's 11 remake is still a good film in its own right. The question was not are they better than the original, but are they good. The remake of Dawn of the Dead is nowhere near as good as Romeros version, but it is still a good remake. Same with Cape Fear and Heat (I prefer LA Takedown).

But they are both good films. Just because one is not as good as the other doesn't suddenly make the other rubbish! One (in this case Wilder's version) is better than the other, but both are decent films.
off topic - Do you really think Oceans 11 remake in it's right is a good film?
I do like the orignal DOTD but i feel that the remake is much better then the orignal

Yup, I loved Ocean's 11 (and have seen it a few times since buying the DVD too). It has a tone and feel to it which is just fun. Ocean's 12 and 13 were not quite as good and became a little too self indulgent, but were worth watching.

I felt that about the 1st seen Oceans 12 did not bother seeing 13.
What do you think about the Italian Job and it's 2003 remake?

The original is a great film, and still immensely rewatchable due mostly to the personalities on screen. The remake was okay, passed the time, but I have never felt any compulsion to rewatch it, so class it as an average film.
I remember reading about the remake and apparantly it wasn't planned as a remake of Italian Job, but after they pitched the story some exec thought "Hmm, cars and a heist - some comparisons may be drawn so lets buy the rights to the name just to cover ourselves!" In the end I think it worked against the film as expectations were then quite high, and the flick would always be compared to the original Job.
I personally thought the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds remake was pants.
OK it was slightly closer to the book than the 1953 version, had the Tripods, the "Thunder Child" etc, but I'd still love to see a definitive movie version of the story as told in the Jeff Wayne musical of WOTW.

I fully agree

As a remake i think it's not a scrach on the orignal! But as a film in it's own right i enjoyed it and i agree that it was closer to the book and heres it comes......
BUT the orignal is just pure class in a glass!!!! the acting, the FX, sound track all just pure class! :hihi:
*Felicity* 23-11-2008, 14:59 The 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street is better than the original. Richard Attenborough is an extremely convincing Santa :) .

I was thinking this as i was watching it the other day, Richard Attenborough is santa!
Last year's remake of Hairspray was definitely better than the original 80s movie starring her out of Blondie IMO.
I want to go and see the Stage version in London next year if I can save up the £50 a ticket plus the price of a Travelodge accomodation for me, Mum and Dad.
My OH says that, but the orignal one has Rikki Lake of day time TV talk show fame in it and the new one has Zac Efron who i cannot stand!!

Agreed....a total classic that could never be done better.....the cylinder unscrewing and the emerging Martian electronic Eye are probably the most iconic events ever in cinema history.........OK so not in the original book I think, hence not in the modern film, but so much better a concept.......still scares the pants off me...
EdnaKrabappe 27-12-2008, 14:41 I liked Vanilla Sky but I also liked Abre los ojos. Cape Fear and The Fly I also preferred. Surely it's like records though, it's usually the one you watch/listen to first you prefer.
I finally saw the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still this weekend, and it's a completely different film from the original (different characters, and some of the characters that stayed had very different moral positions; some very different plot elements, etc.), but it is a pretty good film. My girlfriend hadn't seen the original and thought the remake was excellent.
I haven't dared watch the remake of The Italian Job.
