View Full Version : Help my 7 year old is in agony
vibealite198 16-11-2008, 18:35 Hi all... my 7year old daughters been crying and going mad with head ache all day... i rang health call and they said i had to make an appointment with her gp tomorrow.... the head aches causing her to cry with pain and she's now feeling sick and her neck is hurting.. I have given her pain relief but it's not working. She's gone to ben now cause i thought being in a dark room would help, but she is still crying. Does anyone know if children get migraines as i have never come accross it before.... I have another 2 children and not one of them have had this.... Any ideas how i can help her??
If it continues i think im going to to ring health call back
evildrneil 16-11-2008, 18:36 Get her to a hospital NOW that is symptomatic of meningitus...
vibealite198 16-11-2008, 18:41 i rang health call theyt said it was unlikey to be that as she as not other syptoms... will ring them bk now
Nothing like terrifying a mum! Whilst the symptoms could be meningitis, it could also be a migraine or the flu. It could be any number of things. I would recommend ringing NHS Direct on 0845 4647. They will be able to assist you and offer some good quality sound advise.
vibealite198 16-11-2008, 18:45 i rang nhs direct..... they said if her neck/legs or arms start to hurt i must ring 999... oh god im scared to bloodydeath...
evildrneil 16-11-2008, 18:47 The typical thing to look for with meningitus is a rash that doesn't disappear if you press it with a glass tumbler. HOWEVER this is actually symptomatic of septesemia caused by mengacoccal infection and isn't always seen. In this case I would say you are much better safe than sorry and a hospital visit would be well warranted...

It COULD be but to be sure then I would take them in to A and E asap. So what if it isn't and they send you home better than not going when there is a need...
I'd go with what they say. If they feel that you should monitor for that then please do. Are you aware to keep an eye out for a rash? Here is the link (http://www.meningitis-trust.org/Signs-Symptoms.html)to the meningitis website.
I must advise though, don't panic too much, it's more likely than not that it isn't anything as serious as meningitis but just keep an eye out.
If your worried at all ring NHS Direct back.
Higs to you all
xx
vibealite198 16-11-2008, 18:49 yes i agree.... im taking her up anyway

However, I feel that you are scaring her more than helping her!
If everyone went to A & E at every sniffle then nobody would ever get seen!
Keep an eye on her condition and if ANYTHING changes then act accordingly.
vibealite198 16-11-2008, 18:59 im not scaring her lol im calm around her she cant see the pc... help is on tis way she cant stand the light or anything... my parents r picking us up also her necks hurting

This isn't a sniffle - acute head pain, nuchal rigidity and photophobia are all primary symptoms of meningitis. The rash is a pointer and not always present even in bacterial meningitis. Given that meningitis can be fatal in hours if this were my child they would be in A and E before you could say analgesic! I'm fully aware that I could be over-reacting and my apologies if I am but meningitis isn't a condition to take chances with...
bones123 16-11-2008, 19:14 hope she ok please let us no good look
I hope everything works out ok with this. I don't think anniec was saying that you were scaring your little girl vibealite, more that evildrneil was scaring you. It is easy to panic so I can see where anniec is coming from. I would follow the advice of NHS Direct which it sounds like you are.
Hope she is OK. My son suffers from migraines and make him feel sick and he has to lie down and sleep as sometimes that's the only thing that helps - his started when he was about 9.
My niece also suffers with migraines with the same symptoms as your daughter. I would think however as she has photophobia, neck pain, headache and sickness then I would take her to the Childrens.
I wasn't having a go at you evil, just stating it could be any number of things and not to panic. It appears however that the photophobia is a new symptom and coupled with the others makes the condition appear more serious.
I really hope that it isn't serious and they send you straight home (however, the Dr's at the children's are wonderful and nothing is too much trouble)
I'm thinking about you both sweetie, please keep us updated.
metaphoria 16-11-2008, 20:19 Sometimes a little panic gets things happening faster, with good intention and valid reason.
Hope she's OK.
vibealite198 16-11-2008, 22:25 she's sufferong from migraine :( sevre one :( she is in agony...
evildrneil 16-11-2008, 22:35 I'm glad it was "only" a migraine and apologies if I caused unnecessary panic
I've always found that the best cure for migraines once they appear is to sleep them off :)
Birth-Peace 16-11-2008, 23:11 I'm glad its nothing more serious, but sorry its so horrid for her. Put her in a dark room with a cool flannel on her head and maybe do some light touch massage on her shoulders and face.
As far as EDN scaring people with possibilities of meningitis, I couldn't agree with him more, and I'm shocked that after telling 'Health Call' that she had a severe headache with neck pain that they said to wait to see GP in morning.
A rash is not always present with meningitis, infact a childhood friend of mine went into a coma and nearly died because her parents put her symptoms down to flu as she didn't have a rash.
So you did absolutely the right thing Vibealite. I wish your little one a speedy recovery from her migraine. It might be worth making an appointment with your GP to see if he can suggest what might have caused it or do an allergy test. I used to get horrid migraines as a child after I ate a certain type of colouring in sweets (can't for the life of me remember which one) but I grew out of it after a few years.
lauren84 17-11-2008, 06:46 Glad it is 'only' a migrane (only meaning nothing more serious) but poor girl give her my hugs as migranes are awful, especially for a child who at the time has no idea what is happening to her! :(
I used to get migranes and hallucinations from caffeine until I was about 12. As I got older I knew I couldn't have any Coke but I remember once when I was about 5 I went to a Bonfire with my neighbour and I shared a can with her daughter.....it was awful once it had 'kicked in' I had the severe headache, could see flames coming out of my fingers, it all seemed very real!
Nowadays I tend to get a bit 'giddy' with coffee so I tend to avoid it. :)
bones123 17-11-2008, 09:30 my son is 12 and has had migraine from been about 6 at the start he had it in is stomach which i didnt know children get it in the stomach then about 2 years ago its gone to is head he as them really bad every 2-3 weeks still has 2 see doc every month dont know why they say 2 to keep a check on him
jediwarrior 17-11-2008, 09:42 i get migraines and have since about 9 yrs old they run in cycles and once in the cycle i have to take preventer's to break it they will be monitoring your son bones coz if they get more and more regular they can give preventer's but they wont till you are getting more than 2 a week! however they may also be monitoring to see if there is a pattern and so if there is a trigger that can be avoided. Mine are hormone related and so i know there is a trigger but little i can do about it.
Debbie (jedis other half)
duckweed 17-11-2008, 11:21 Yes I've had migraine since I was about 8. I found tiredness and someone smoking triggers it off though sometimes it comes without that. I found it hard as even though the GP correctly diagnosed it the school wouldn't accept one so young could get it. It was particularly bad because of hormonal surges in adolescence but now I'm at the other end (on the change) it happens very rarely though of course its also easier to avoid smokers these days.
vibealite198 17-11-2008, 17:15 thanks for all your concern... she is alot better today... and evildrneil you did not scare me... i thought the same. I took her just to be safe rather than sorry...... thanks all.... claire
