Bloor St sounds so familiar and
I remember Gladys, the scent of her lingering forever in my nose.
My relatives called Hendrick lived around Bloor St the front entrance was on one street and the back way in was on another.

Since this thread started it seems that some thing from my Bloor st days keeps cropping up in my life.
Last night I went for a drink and someone mentioned that they had worked in a certain pub many years before. I told them that I had been in that pub many years ago with some old neighbours of mine, and he knew them. A family called Sue and Steve Kerr and their son Johnathon who lived in Bloor st, the same time as us.

Also today we have had a phone call out of the blue from someone else who used to live on Bloor st, a member of the Marper family.

Very strange.

I also delivered newspapers for Dennis and Maureen at the post office. Your discussions have brought back some good memories. After Dennis and Maureen retired, the newsagency business moved across the road to the bottom of Whitehouse Road where I continued to deliver papers from for a short while. I lived on Daniel Hill Street opposite the school and my grandmother (who died when I was very young) lived further up Daniel Hill Street a few doors up from the Blake.
I can remember being there when Dennis's daughter had the accident and recall seeing the ambulancemen attending to her.
Do you remeber the hardware shop below the chippie. It had a wonderful smell - a combination of carbolic soap and dustiness. I also had a small part-time job in the bakers (can't remeber the name) cleaning the back window every fortnight for a sixpence and a bag of buns.

I can also vaguely remember a row of shops opposite the post office which were all linked and probably owned by the same people. One of them sold rocks and polished stones and minerals. Even today I always wonder why such a strange shop was located there.

I lived at 31 Bloor St, up to around 1957, when my mum passed away and we moved to Boston Lincolnshire, then returned a few years later to live with my grandmother at number 61. I was great mates with David and Brian Mottram.
I can also remember Harry Clegg, I think his name was, who was a complete nutter, and always mimmicking a cat in pain.
The bakers name was Bilton, who are still trading I believe. The son was Philip.
I have often wondered why Bloor street was demolished and the other streets survived. Maybe the bombs made the houses unstable. Anyone know the answer to this

I think Bloor st was demolished so that the council could build the new estate there. I left Bloor st just before it was demolished. We lived 5 doors above where the bomb dropped and basicaly the house was structually sound.

At this moment, Brenda Marper, and the daughter of Genine Marper from Bloor st are visiting my wife.

Hi Dennis, I lived at 10, Bloor Street and remember all the names you mention. Went to Burgoyne Road School, Eric Goodison, Philip Bilton and Brian Mottram were in my class.
I too wonder why Bloor Street was demolished, went to visit recently trying to stand on the spot where we lived, do you remember the Scott's Lolly Pop shop as it was known, Jack and Kitty ran it and their son was John? I live in Buckinghamshire now, left Sheffield in 1968

I got it wrong, I think she meant Southport.

She has been showing me some old photos of you and her.

Yes it was Southport, are you still in Sheffield?

Yes, Annette would never move because of the family.

Very understandable, we moved from Sheffield in 1968, firstly to London and five years later to Buckinghamshire where we had our family, we have five grandchildren from three married daughters. Someone on the site mentioned the Beal's, there were two families of Beal's one of which I believe lived next door to Annette and another with four daughters Barbara, Christine, Kathleen and Pauline, does Annette remember them?

We lived at number 3, a large stone faced building at the top of Bloor St. opposite the Blake Pub. Originally the house was home to the Walkley Liberal Club and was split into two residences in the 1930's. Durning the war, our mum worked at Whitehouses beer off at the top of Blake St.

During the war there was a static water reservoir, built at the bottom of the street on a site where a number of houses had been bombed. I remember Tysons, a tobacconists, a chip shop run by the Glossop family, these were at the top end of Daniel Hill St., and the Priors, my aunt and uncle, who ran a wallpaper shop at number 2 Walkley St. My brother, sister and I went to Upperthorpe school. We left the area in 1948.

Don't suppose anyone has photo's of this area, I've seen the one on Picture Sheffield, but that seems about it.

Hi

If you were in the same class as Brian, then we will know each other. I sat next to him for a long time, tormenting 'Pop' Morris. Same goes for Mr Simmons, I often recieved his speciality of swinging the blackboard onto my head when standing behind it for some transgression. Othe names I remember were Dennis Beatson and Graham Spurr

Hi Dennis, Yes Dennis Beatson and Graham Spurr were in our class, did you know that Dennis died just over a year ago? Very sad. Are you Brian Mottram's brother? Are you still in Sheffield?
