Just a quick on cos I've got to leave work at 5. What is the Scuba club like now an a sat night. Last I heard it got shut down cos someone got shot in the face but now it has re opened. Not bothered about the shooting but is the music good? Got a mate coming over and thinking about going there.

That's just an exaggerated story. My mate was working there that night and from what I gather there was a shot fired that didn't hit anyone and then the Metro reported it inaccurately. It was never that bad before and I doubt it's that bad now. Just small.

It's amazing how chinese whispers get around. This 'occurance' didn't even happen in 'The Room' (fka the fez club), where scuba is held.

Aside from that, yes, the music is very good, and it's definately worth a visit. See http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41929

yes! finally!

have been looking all afternoon to try and find listings for scuba @ the room- nothing!

all the club listings site are stupidly out of date! one even told me that roxy was a good place to go (granted it was if you were a student and went on wednesday about 6 years ago!)

anyway, back to the issue:

its my birthday on 16th july and i want to go to scuba. a whole load of mates are coming up from home to visit.

i need to try and find out who's on and what the place is like now (went about 3 years ago- made such a lasting impression i desperately want to go back).

is there a website i can send them all to? also i know its only got a capacity of 300- do they do a guestlist? just want to make sure we can actually get in!

thanks,

sophie

p.s. the shooting wasnt at the room (upstairs fka fez club) it was down stairs (fka element, fka poo na na's- cant remember before that!). somebody did get shot, but not properly, and they decked the kid who did- fair play! lol

p.p.s. scuba has never moved.

actually, the dude who got shot was shot in the face so unless it was with a spud-gun I'd say that was properly. Thing was the night it happened on was a Cheesy R'n'B night on a Friday run by an out-of-town promoter who thought he was a badboy and decided to bring his shinanigans(?) upto Sheffield from Birmingham. Trouble had been brewing at that night for a while apparently as the bouncers allowed it to build up and eventually get out of hand, yet Sheffield police in their wisdom decided to punish all the innocents by closing (and trashing) the place down and now Phonetics has no home and is forced to nomadically walk the earth for the rest of eternity, along with all those members of the public who were regulars there who are now lost on a Saturday night (I tend to frequent Scuba now, but it was nice to have the option before).
(sorry 'bout the lack of punctuation but I fancy myself as a bit of a Kerouak)
enough of my babble. you can actually subscribe to the scuba email by politely emailing & asking Mr Scuba himself (he posted a message on here)

when i said not properly- i meant he didnt die- it was merely a flesh wound.

and trust me...it was his neck that got scratched.

nuff of that anyway- its in the past, done and dusted and im not really that fussed.

i have contacted scuba on one of the other posts re listings and guest list etc, but i would like to get a bit of feedback from regulars at the night.

in the nicest way, of course he's gonna tell me the night is the dog's cajonas- he wouldnt be much of a promoter if he didnt.

at the same time, im not saying he'd be lying if he did say this- i just want to know what other people think.

what im after is the usual stuff, atmosphere, attitude of doorstaff, general types of punters, service at the bar, etc etc.

look forward to hearing back- my birthday plans depend on this! ive sold this night to my mates on the basis of what it was like a few years back- has it changed much?

thanks,

sophie

I can only tell you what it was like a few years ago - very good music (assuming you like decent House). Crowd was a mixture of folk who were there for the music and quite a few who were just there to drink after last orders & could have been in any club - but overall - a good relxed atmosphere.

Its been weekly for god knows how many years - so they must be doing something right...

atmosphere is friendly, and doorstaff are usually quite friendly. In terms of punters, it's a fair mix, not too many trendy types. The bar isn't that cheap though.

It tends to fill up about midnight, so not difficulty getting in.

Went on Saturday and had fun.

Was phon-etics hosting the night tho, so probably a little bit different from the usual scuba fare.

On the 16th it's comfortable records, who are talented local producers, probably playing good quality underground house.

Obliged to say though, if you're considering going out on the 16th you should maybe consider this:-

you know it's all about spending your birthday in zanzibastards, innit soph :D

the only nights i go to in sheff tend to be drum n bass soph, so i'm not much help in this department.. TTC BBQ is a good idea, as it's an all day event and will be more attractive to our agoraphobic staffordian compardres.. plus JD may well have some involvement so i might be able to blag guestlist

what's this scuba vibe like? is it all pink shirts and toni & guy haircuts?

ha ha! not a pink t-shirt or toni and guy haircut in sight i hope bobby (unless its on a bird! lol)

i am NOT going to the chuffing bag for my birthday- im going to be 26 for gods sake- old enough to be a mum to some of the whippersnappers in there! lol

was gonna suggest a bbq at ours on saturday before going out (cheap beer at morrisons just round the corner- well cheaper than town anyhoo)

but...if i can get someone else to arrange food, music and beer for me- hell thats just too easy! plus a bit of guestlist action never goes amiss and my old housemate from uni is djing- ian cracknell.

have emailed this to the agorophobic staffordians but no replies yet- have you heard from them?

back to the point though- scuba anyone?
