I am sure when Citygirl sees this post she will respond. You cannot move in our house for scrapbook material. I think she loves scrapbooking more than she loves me. She spends hours in hobbycraft and even found a scrapbook shop up London road last weekend. It is becoming quite scary. She is even trying to turn the kids into mini scrapbookers. I am sure it has been instigated by some strange cult. My ex wife introduced her to it and now they scrapbook together! Spooky!

I can totally relate!

It is very addictive. I have a whole room full off stuff and go to a class on a Saturday. Hobbycraft is ok but it's not the best for stuff, i spend a fortune via the WWW

So does Citygirl! She got some stuff off ebay this week. She even went down to Kent to a workshop a couple of weeks ago.

Maybe I am missing something here but what exactly is scrapbooking?

My memories of scrapbooks were plain books filled with newspaper cuttings, stickers and anything else you wanted to keep safe as a child.

Has this changed into some major craft/hobby now?

Scrapbooking is kind of like it was in the 80's when you pout photos and memorabilia into a book, but things have changes alot since then.
It's a very creative craft these days.

My friend's mum has recently started up a scrapbooking (well about a yr ago) business, down south..they have relatives in the US, it's massive over their apparantly.. Although I have never made a 'scrapbook', I do keep a diary each year.. i fill it with pictures, cinema tickets, photographs, decorations etc and it's huge by the time the end of the year comes, I can't close the diary! I understand that this is a very crude way of 'scrapbooking', I read an article in the Sheffield Star about a women from Sheffield who's business has 'taken off' with all the new interest in the craft/art!

Yeah, I live in the US and it is massive over here (everything is bloody massive!) It's incredible the amount of 'scrapbooking' stuff that you can buy. Walmart has a section and you can get really good packs of great paper and 'dinky' stickers etc for $5 a pack. Walmart do mail order but I don't know if they will send stuff out of the country www.walmart.com (http://www.walmart.com) It might be worth a look though!

Whereabouts are the classes you attend? I origionally started making greetings cards with my two little boys, then started scrapbooking too. My 4 and 6 year old want me to get them an album so they can have a go. I find it very addictive and therapeutic.

Sorry to hijack this thread!

This might sound a bit silly, but I want to start a scrapbook and I don't really know what sort of stuff goes into them.

I tend to hoard stuff, that remind me of days out etc, like tube tickets when I went to London and other random things!

Is it just anything that means 'something' and not specifiically just photos etc?

Thanks

back in my hardcore punk days i made about 5 scrapbooks full of punk info / pics from various sources.....posters, newspapers, magazines, fanzines, theres also some rare gig tickets :P

but this was personal and had a point rather than a fashionable craft
i also did some political montages on sheets of paper, think i still have em

lol Ok then

Sorry, just messing, I didnt mean to lower the tone. Years ago my dad used to do house clearances for people who had died and there were no relatives around to empty the house. It was way back in the late 70s and very early 80s.
I sometimes used to go with him and it became a real adventure for a young un like me. I always used to find scrapbooks in these houses and looking back it was a real shame they were going to be destroyed along with loads of other personal stuff.
Some were very nearly photo albums, they had very little in the way of cuttings and stuff, but others really were proper scrapbooks. They gave you an insight into the persons interests and thoughts, their emotions even.
I doubt many of the younger generation will be interested in scrapbooks nowadays. Shame really
AJ

I'm going to start one of these in the new year and get the kids one each. I want to record every trip we make whether it's a holiday, day trip or just a walk out somewhere. Something to look at when they get older :) Any suggestions as to what sort of stuff I should get in ready?

Some really good magazines on scrapbooking. You can get them at WH Smith.
I have been scrapbooking for 2 years and have made scrapbooks in different sizes. Have even made my own albums.
It brings your photos to life and can tell stories that might be forgotten or lost.
Didn't know there was a club in Sheffield. Thanks for posting the info

Hobbycraft do sell them but they are very limited and expensive, you're much better off buying them online.
There are literally hundreds of scrapbook albums out there ranging from 6x6 inches up to 12x12 inches which is the most popular.
Here are a few lnks to fave online shops of mine

www.kalulu.com Great for albums!

Went to hobby craft today - the albums are nice but nothing out of the ordinary and range in price from £14.99 to £24.99 (the ones they had in stock today) so I think I'm going to have a look round before deciding on one. The papers etc are lovely though and I managed to spend a tenner on various papers, and trimmings!(and these were sale items, some of which I thought were very reasonable) I could have gone mad in there! Can see me getting hooked on this one!!! Kittenta - well worth a look if your passing!!

I am wanting my kids to start one each to keep a record of days out etc bt I can't really afford to go splashing out on three scrapbooks! Does anyone have any ideas for an alternative that I could use? I had thought about those hardback notebooks but I figured that maybe the pages would get too heavy and tear with them only being thin? I wanted to start them this weekend too.

If you get the kids the scrap in A4 then they could use normal folders with the plastic A4 sleeves that are just a few pounds and everything will be protected.

Thought about you yesterday. In The Works on the moor, they have now got some small albums, ideal for the kids including some papers and trimmings etc for £2.99/£3.99 each. They would also make nice little presents for anyone into crafting. (Thinking of asking The Works for a cut of their profits after all this advertising I'm doing for them!)

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this so I'll apologise if it is a duplicate message but they hold a scrapbooking class at Elsecar heritage centre a couple of nights a week. The craft shop that runs classes is further up middlewood road, opposite the park where the library is. It is set back a little. You have to book for the classes but they are always very popular and the staff in there are really friendly

Love scrapbboking. I have been working in antiques for years and there is nothing that makes me sadder than old family photoalbums no names just a load of faces, no stories. I always wonder who they are and I'm sure that there would be someone who would love to have their family album if only you could trace them. Scrapbooking Rules oh and cardmaking and felting and quilting and don't know yet have to see what I find next

Scrapbooking is the best way to keep your memories alive> Your normal photo albums most of which have acid in them destroy your photos. As a scrapbooker you keep your photos on pages that not only are full of all the true memories of that photo but are also visually pleasing. Scrapbooking products are all acid and lignin free which means your photos should be good for about 200 years . So when your great grandchildren pick up your album they'll know that you loved or hated Chocolate and that your favorite group was who ever . you childrens 1st words all the things that are important to you.

I think this was my 4th completed page, but it's one of my favorites cause like the bright colours etc. this was actually taken just before the layout was stuck down (with 3d effects etc) but you can still get the general idea. As promised above, here's another one of my pages. It was actually done as part of a "Shoe Project" at a local art group/Church. We had to make something about a special pair of shoes that meant something to us - a scrap book page was the obvious thing to do for me.

Hi - have only just discovered this thread - I just LOVE scrapbooking and agree it is totally addictive and can be extremely expensive. I get most of my stuff of the web, especially 12x12 background papers and embellishments. I don't really rate Hobbycraft for scrapbooking, I have been to Craft Haven on London Road as well as Which Craft opposite the Edge.

We were in the States earlier on this year & I had the good fortune to stumble upon a craft shop - there was just so much to choose from it was unbelievable, I didn't know where to start and what with my husband waiting for me in the car outisde in temps of the 40s it was a bit of a supermarket sweep. And it was all SO cheap, if only we could have the choice over here.

I'd be interested to hear from any fellow scrapbookers - I've done 2 so far, both for friends' 40ths. Plan on doing more for myself and the family, when I get round to it that is as it drives my husband mad as I tend to take over the house with all the my stuff!

I know what you mean - scrapbooking/card making stuff slowly taking over our house too!

Here is a scrap book page that I completed today. It represents my kids and words that mean something to them as they are NOW - no doubt most of these words won't mean the same to them in a couple of years time, so I just wanted to do something to remember what they are into now.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s138/mackenzieD/MyPoettreeScrapbookpage07.jpg

It's called a Poet Tree - a tree with words of a poem from the branches or words that just mean something to you for whatever reason.

I haven't strted one yet because I can think of too many things to do, along with the kids ideas too, so far we have thought of:

Christmas collection (a page every christmas)
Holiday / day out scrapbook
School years scrap book.
The seasons (a nature type scrapbook of what we see and collect related to the current season)
A pet book (we'd need lots of pages :hihi:)
My daughters idea, a favourite stories scrapbook (each page telling a favourite bedtime story, she wants to dress up as the characters for a photo lol)

and that's off the top of my head lol

I make small books of one off occasions, these take so little time and at least I have them done. I find 12 x 12 pages too much, I start one and then think of a million others that I need to do.

I love scrapbooking as well as quilting. The only problem I have is trying NOT to keep buying stash and fabic for some new project I want to do when I've already got other projects on the go.

I've already got several albums at home... some of them themed... American Tour, Baby, Anniversery, Holidays, school, as well as one of General LOs that are waiting for their own album and the ones I've done for presents for the family.

At some point I want to do a "Book Of Me", but when I'll get time or a chance is anyone's guess.

My current album is my son's Army Album, which I'm almost up to date with. Also, an ongoing album is of the Battalion Quilt I'm hand stitching with applique for him with all the emblems of his regiment on. The information and details are all in a note book at the moment until I decide how to do the page LOs and what colour and size the album should be.

I have been journaling the background info about each applique block and why I chose it, a bit of local/world news now and again for the odd paragraph, and a few words from me to my son... sometimes written as a letter so that he knows what was happening at home and my thoughts as I made his quilt. I have also included a photo of each block as I've finished it.

I've photocopied some of the fabric to use as background pages for when I put the album together, but haven't decided whether to make the album from scratch yet. I've loved doing this... it's definitely been a labour of love, both the quilting and the recording of it.

Following the measurements I got from a purchased album, I had a go at making an 8.5x11 inch album from scratch and it's turned out great. Just a couple of things I'd do differently next time round now that I know which bits to do first.

Just as an added, The Works on The Moore have got some Rose-Pink Damasque Scrapbooking albums in for £5.99. Having got a sister and some friends wanting to have a go at scrapbooking I've got a few early Christmas presents sorted already.:D

Sorry it's such a long post... just realised how much waffling I've done:blush:

Following the measurements I got from a purchased album, I had a go at making an 8.5x11 inch album from scratch and it's turned out great. Just a couple of things I'd do differently next time round now that I know which bits to do first.

Just as an added, The Works on The Moore have got some Rose-Pink Damasque Scrapbooking albums in for £5.99. Having got a sister and some friends wanting to have a go at scrapbooking I've got a few early Christmas presents sorted already.:D

Sorry it's such a long post... just realised how much waffling I've done:blush:

Damkina, I bought one of the scrapbooks from The Works - aren't they lovely and more than worth £5.99! The Christmas present idea was good - but no-one else I know is into the scrap booking thing :( which is a shame! Anyway, it's inspired me to do yet another page (Halloween pictures from Fright Night) - thanks for telling us about them!

Although there is the odd inexpensive gem found with scrapbooking albums, I've been foraging the internet for something ongoing that won't cost a fortune every time I need a new one. As on average they can be anything around £15 upwards (plus p&p) for the 12x12 if you want anything different.

I found out today that WHSmiths do A4 plastic page protectors that are acid free. Then I started tallying up the combined prices and realised that the Lever Arch files came in a multitude of patterns... some with clear plastic covers so that a sheet could be inserted to make your own album cover. The price is a fraction of what it would cost to buy the American sized albums.

Granted, 8.5x11 doesn't fit the A4 protectors (too short and wide) but can be cut up for matting etc, but the 12x12 can be cut down for a full A4 sheet with another full length strip left over to use on another page.

The thought that I could buy these off the shelf whenever I needed one is also a plus, although I haven't found any that are padded... yet.

So, I'm really tempted to have a go at this size and wondered if anyone had done any layouts already and how they found it to work with, before I start cutting up my paper.

Thanks
Joanne

PS. Footiefreak, Choose a victim, buy them an album with a magazine or book for examples, some tape and scissors/craft knife and see if they take up the challange!! Did you get to do your Hallowe'ne page?

Hi Damkina!

No, I've never done any size other than 12 x 12, but I would imagine it would work. If I was doing it though I would have to decide right at the beginning of the album whether I was going to do portrait or landscape - I wouldn't be able to have a mixture of both. It would drive me mad if it wasn't all the same (but that's just me!) You could always give it a try with something not too special (just in case your not happy) - if you do, I'd love to know how you go. I suppose album wise it would work out a lot cheaper that the 12 x 12's. Then you could spend what you'd saved on some more stash!

Umm, thinking of starting my niece off on this scrap booking lark - she's always messing around with photo's making collages so maybe she would enjoy scrap booking if she gave it a try!

Yes, I got my Halloween page done! I'll get a picture posted on here later! Thanks for asking!

Owww! How sweet!:)

Great layout!

I'm going to have to get some photos of mine on here. I keep looking at other peoples craft photos and never get on with taking them of my own!
