I was down in town when this happened. I didn't see him fall but when I turned round I saw him lying there and people shouting and screaming etc. He was badly hurt - there was a lot of blood around his head and face. The ambulance arrived in record time though and when I finally managed to get out of the cordoned off bit they had already supported him and were in the process of transferring him to the ambulance.

:( When they started to move him they had breathing apparatus still on his face, so I guessed that meant he was still alive. TBH I didn't look very closely or for very long - I was far too unnerved by the fact that one minute it was all normal and the next minute this bloke was lying on the floor surrounded by blood :(

He was well known in the Jobcentre. My friend works there and gets threats of suicide all the time when people's payments are stopped etc.. Its such a shame to think he may have told someone what he was about to do. We obviously cant know that it was anything to do with this though.

Wondered what had happened - I'm currently down at the PTE working and when I came by the place was cordoned off.

We must have just missed each other, Tracie!

I arrived just as they had finished cleaning up after ths awful incident.

How dreadful!

And, yes, cathS is right, there is a public balcony that runs all the way along, from the market, right up to the disused British Home Stores Building. It's called "the Gallery" and at one time, it had all sorts of shops, up there.these days it's just a bit of a hang out for youths, yobs and undesireables.

I hope to goodness this person is okay. One of my friends was there, and she was convinced that they didn't survive..

Your friend could be right PT. When the ambulance crew arrived they definitely put the breathing apparatus on his face but in all honesty, it's unlikely someone would survive a fall like that.

It's so awful.

EDIT - sorry CathS, I didn't read your post first:

I guess in that case he did survive the fall then. Fingers crossed he'll be alright.

Dosen't sound like he intended to survive poor man, maybe it's best he dosen't, who knows what problems he has to face again if he does.

Here you go...

Man 'critical' after balcony fall
A man is in a critical condition after falling from a balcony in the centre of Sheffield.
The 34-year-old from the Shiregreen area of the city suffered head injuries when he landed on the pavement in Haymarket after falling about 15ft.

He is being treated in Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

A police spokeswoman said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, which happened at lunchtime on Friday.

She added that a number of witnesses saw the fall and CCTV footage was also being examined.

I was in town yesterday and there were loads of police cars outside wilkinsons and the road was taped off

I heard a drunken man had jumped off the roof at wilkinsons and died. There was a pool of blood on the floor

Did you see it or know anymore info?

Yes I was thinking that. What a rude way to try and kill yourself - someone would have to clean up the mess :/

he was probably thinking along the same lines as you kathy...plenty of mops n buckets in wilko's;) what i was actually getting at though was jumping from a low balcony such as the one above wilko's was probably a sympathy thing.

If he survives and his giro hasn't come through - if the police give him the CCTV footage he could always get £250 from 'you've been framed' Its the sort of accident that keeps millions of viewers entertained on a saturday teatime along with Frisbees smashing in to chins, elderly people smashing into greenhouses and children horrifically cycling into frozen lakes. Man falling from fifteen foot balcony into busy shopping precinct must be the sort of thing they’re after. Hope he ok though – sounds like he’s out of the woods now.:)

I think, unless it's been made public by the Police/Star, it would be best not to post it here.

No,

Until and unless it becomes public knowledge - no names, please!

'Horseplay' ended in death for drug addict

A DRUG addict who died from head injuries after he fell 15ft from a balcony above a city centre shop was killed because of "horseplay" while under the influence of alcohol, an inquest heard.
Crack user Thomas Tomlinson, aged 34, was thought to be "messing about" when he climbed over a barrier outside Wilkinsons in Haymarket, lost his grip and plummeted head first to the ground.

Rest of Sheffield Star report on inquest here:
