My first question would be, no disrespect intended, but is she being incontinent in her sleep? Check her bedding. Often older dogs [especially bitches] can be. That is probably why she smells of urine. Believe me, I am not taking the p***! I've experienced it with a Stafford some years ago.

She could also have a slight bladder weakness, perhaps you could try Tenna Lady!! :hihi:

Seriously I would take her to your vet you don't want what could be a little problem now be left until it comes a big and more expensive problem later.

I'll agree with that - Isn't this the first signs of something serious? Sorry, can't remember what - I've never had a bitch (No trolling please  )

has she been spayed?

I had a bitch that had beeen spayed, and it caused a bit of waterworks problems.

Although it normally makes for a happier, healthier, longer-lived dog, occasionally, it can cause mild to moderate incontinence.

also, you don't say what breed of dog she is, for some, eight is old, for others, it's only middle age.

some dogs can get a form of canine dementia.

whatever it is, i hope you get her sorted out...

the best thing you can do is get her checked out by a vet.

She is an Doberman Cross and yes she has been spayed. Its not a major problem it only happens now and again. I saw a TV show on BBC2 a couple of years ago were pet owners gave handy hints & tips about looking after their pets and one woman told how her dog had the same problem as mine and she put something in this dogs food to stop it smelling.

I'll ring up the vets on Tuesday and ask for some advice thanks PT

:( I didn't mean to worry you with the diabetes comment, it probably is just a leaking problem. I had two dogs with diabetes and the early they catch it the better. Diabetes can cause a urine like smell in animals as well as people if their glucose is out of balance x

we had a german shepherd that was the same as she got older, the vet put her on drops for it. They were called propalin syrup and she could have up to 15 drops a day but she hated it but we got round it by buying a big packet of ultra cheap wafer thin ham and giving her a slice every night with the drops on so that we were sure she had them all. After a while we gradually reduced the drops until it came back then increased them again until it stopped, we found out that she could manage happilly on 5 drops per day and the bottle lasted for months.

Hi Jon, it was prescribed by the vet and comes in 2 different sized bottles but if given the choice i would take the smaller one. it might not be the same thing that`s wrong with your dog but i think it`s very likely that it will be. If it is do the same thing that we did and see how few she needs to stop her doing it and think about putting it in something similar as if it`s put in the food you can`t really be sure that she has all of it at the same time.

 Zena said she doesn't want everyone knowing that she has a leaking problem, she is now taking propalin syrup which works a treat.

;) Thanks Strix
