Furthering the topic earlier regarding the lack of quality restaurants in Sheffield, I found this site purporting to give a comprehensive guide to the culinary delights to be found here - look at the front page! Bordering on offensive I'd say - wrote this in:

Hi,

Just wondering how you can possibly justify having Frankie & Bennie's as the first image users of your website see as an example of the best in Sheffield dining. I understand that you aim to cater for all tastes, budgets etc but to have a dismal faux NY-Italian chain as representative of our UNIQUE city is at best lazy and at worst offensive.

Also, a note on Vito's. It is a comically outmoded italian (nice variety there)which literally never has a single customer.

I find it saddening that a site dedicated to Sheffield's demonstrates no passion for it's locality despite intentending to provide a worthwhie service.

Interested to see how they respond

that sounds like something i would write......spot on!

the restaurant situation in sheffield is pitiful, really embarrasing i think and a shame.

surely the standard of dining in sheffield is comperable to an average size market town. leopold square is a missed opportunity.

Y'know (sorry to be such a pedant) - but it would have sounded better without typos and grammatical errors.

Not being picky (yes, I know......) but I'm sure that readers and editors of such sites take more notice of correctly-written posts.

Sorry!

It doesn't provide a "complete list of all the restaurants in Sheffield" either.

Sorry! :blush:I'd agree with you - if the OP here wasn't providing evidence that the site is a heap of carelessly composed rubbish anyway ;)

Why not try to answer the question, instead of trying to show people how clever you are.:(

Its pretty silly to suggest that the level of grammer (sic.) on that post undermines the point being made, it is clear and readable.

Also it is a strange, not to mention elitest, asertion that only those with perfect mastery of prescribed English gramar (sic. er) can make a valid point.

I might also suggest that if you are as embarrased as the bashful smiley and multiple apologies lead us to believe then perhaps just try not being a gramma (sic. est) pedant.....

i don't really see many errors except the missing capitalisation in 'Italy?'

Having worked in restaurants before I can let you know that you have to pay to have your restaurant to appear on this site. There are different price structures allowing you to appear on different pages.

So if you have money to spend no matter how good or bad your restaurant is you can appear on this site!

You're right it's a rubbish website, but Vitos is excellent :)

I agree with your views re. Frankie and Benny's, but I think you're being quite unfait ro Vitos. We've a been a couple of times on saturday evenings recently, and though rarely full, there's always a healthy number of customers. I've always found the food there to be excellent, and they've just revamped their menu as well.

Totally agree - although given that it appears you have to pay to appear on the site, it would seem their passion is for money, not their locality.

All the same - well done on emailing and let us know if you get a reply!

Looks like it's free to get restaurants listed on the site.

Advertising your restaurant on Sheffield Restaurant Guide is free! Simply fill in the form below and we will create your page. If you have any queries, please contact us.

It is free to a point but if you wish to secure a prime place on the site with larger pictures etc then you can come to a deal with them and pay a subscription. When the site first came about everyone was offered free "advertising ".

The site is not an impartial/independant view of the standard of restaurants that are listed on there. It is more of a listings site.

Yes, Frankie and Bennie's have most likely paid for their prime spot.

We'd just like to clear this point up and state that inclusion on the website is completely free. There are no deals or paid packages available, and we don't offer enhanced listings or ways to promote individual restaurants. The idea was mooted some time ago but we never got time to set it up.

The only reason that those three restaurants are pictured on the front page is that we haven't got around to updating it recently (as the site is completely free and is updated when we get time).

So with respect, menz, you must have us confused with a different website that offers paid listings (perhaps Sheff's Chefs (http://www.sheffschefs.co.uk)). :)

Sorry if I have got you confused (happy to apologise) I still don't see it as a good indication of some of the excellent restaurants that we do have in sheffield and would stick to the point that is more of a listings website.

I would suggest that the website be updated soon so as to represent Sheffields restaurants in a better light than the present main page. It is a poor indication to any visitors to the city.

Yes, it is primarily a listings site. Any restaurant in Sheffield can add or update their profile if they contact us.

The problem that we have in keeping it updated is that restaurant owners either don't know about us or don't send their details through. We'd love to be more representative of the dining diversity that Sheffield has to offer but we need help with getting the new information.

We're always open to suggestions so perhaps Sheffield Forum members could vote for three restaurants to have photos on the home page?

Maybe going to the restaurants that you would like to be a representation of sheffield and speaking to them about your site or sending them information about it. That way they would know about it.

Unfortunately your site is not particularly unique in that it is a listings site and doesn't offer independant reviews of the restaurants making it difficult for diners to make informed choices.

Also the site isn't very eye catching and tends to be a little tedious to loook at. I think redesigning the website, having independant reviews and getting out there and telling restaurants about it would definitly help.
