View Full Version : Best Restaurant In Sheffield
It seems like an established notion that Sheffield is not home to many renowned restaurants, in fact that opinion even made a front page spread on the Star earlier this year..
Do you all agree?
My housemate who went to University in York claims there are a dozen excellent quality, contemporary, reasonably priced bistros and restaurants in the York City Centre, so why not here?
I used to enjoy Blue Fin on Hunters Bar roundabout (thats closed now, says a lot about my tastes) whilst Cubanas and Blue Moon Cafe are good near the Cathedral - any more?
gatoruby 13-11-2008, 14:50 I think food is amatter of personal choice someone may love a place onother think it terrible. one of my favorite indian restaurants is Ranmoor Tandori we have yet to take anyone who hasn't enjoyed it aiso what about Rafters The Blue room there's lots of good places if you take the trouble to try then make your own mind up

Providing you then call in at a takeaway for some more food after. Otherwise you'll still be hungry. (Well my wife was when she last went there, and she usually eats small portions anyway)
Ousetunes 13-11-2008, 16:01 Yes, but look at the money tourism brings to places like York. Clearly, there is the market for above average restaurants and bistros there and from my own experience they are not badly priced.
The Blue Bicycle on Foss Bridge was highly recommended but it was nothing exceptional. York has the excellent Tandoori Night and Little Italy but they are run of the mill, after a gallon of ale affairs if you ask me.
Sheffield does have good restaurants. West 10 in Ranmoor is magnificent; I love Cafe Guru and places like Piccolo off West Street. Slightly further afield, you've got Fischers Of Baslow and the silver service affair at Hassop Hall.
The only one I fail to understand is Richard Smith's Thyme and the over-priced cafe in Broomhill.
If someone can tell me about a restaurant in Sheffield where :
a) I'm not subjected to piped music
b) Children aren't allowed to run around
I'll vote for it as Sheffield's best restaurant.
two votes for Ranmoor establishments so far... thats a very nice part of town isn't it. I play tennis there sometimes
Rafters wins hands down. Sure it's not cheap, but the food is fantastic

Take some sandwiches to your local morgue.
DaniBabi 13-11-2008, 16:48 Balti King In Broomhill is fantastic.
Ousetunes 13-11-2008, 16:50 Balti King In Broomhill is fantastic.
Oh dear.
Await an avalanche of comments.
I'll go first.
Possibly the worst indian restaurant in the world.
I went to Akbars the other night, that was pretty amazing. There was free entertainment too, in the form of a fight :)
Sheffield (I'm not from here) seems to have a lot of excellent curry houses and good Italians. Good Italian restaurants, I mean.

the circle chippy in high green ,as much grease as you want . lovely:thumbsup:

Sounds damn good to me! Piped music is the work of Satan and children shouting and running about in restaurants just sets my teeth on edge when you've gone out for a nice relaxing time. Even my daughter wants to know why the other children are so badly behaved! I'm not against children running about and shouting - just not in restaurants.
sunblock 13-11-2008, 20:50 Morans is the best ;)
Blue room for me , but Coach and Horses in Dronfield do fantastic food
iamdonkey 14-11-2008, 11:59 Kentucky fried chicken, quality, good consistance , value

La Scala at Millhouses is fab, and they do the best, most tender steak. Shame that Marco's nearby gets more press - La Scala is little, cosy, family owned and they come to your table and get all excited about the fish they've got that day!
Providing you then call in at a takeaway for some more food after. Otherwise you'll still be hungry. (Well my wife was when she last went there, and she usually eats small portions anyway)
I disagree , we went last Sat and were pretty stuffed although we did all have the tasting menu which is 6 courses...
Food was very good (I mean several levels above Rafters / Artisan/ Morans) and service really excellent.
We did have a small moan about one course which none of us thought worked very well (Partridge stuffed with Black pudding - was dry and seemed a little out of sync with the other courses) and they gave us a free cheese course & glass of pudding wine for free.
However was it the best restaurant? Not sure , was VERY expensive (£ 100 per head) and although the experience was really very good , can I be sure it is better than a cheaper meal elsewhere?
For my money , tapas at lunchtime at the mediterranean down sharrow vale has to be one of the best meals in Sheffield...
Maranello's! - Get voting

Xpoolboy 14-11-2008, 13:32 It has to be the Blue Room, food is excellent and the service is even better
Localboy 14-11-2008, 14:07 My vote would be for Rafters, I’ve enjoyed several fantastic meal there!
shefpoolie 16-11-2008, 14:02 La Tasca on Eccy Rd.
Excellent food, friendly service, reasonable price.
And you get to try several different dishes, which solves the usual problem of trying to decide what to have.
Olive Bar on Div. Street, really lovely food, good atmosphere, prices cheaper than other tapas restaurants in sheffield.
swissheavy 16-11-2008, 16:02 Artisan / Catch.
pippadoll 16-11-2008, 17:27 Wig and Pen is great
Catch is very good for fish and the bouillabaisse was amazing in Artisan.
Marco@Milano was very good for Italian
Indian Chef/Jeera both unbeatable for Indian food
No decent Chinese/vietnamese/thai (farewell bahn nah)
Really enjoyed Rafters
Thyme cafe is good, it always has a good range and is certainly not over priced.
Remo does amazing coffee and great ciabatta
there are a few places I would like to try, which have a good reputation, such as the restaurant in Wortley (now that might be Barnsley) and Chez lahlou in Commonside.
For a chain restaurant Strada isn't too bad, the pizza is okay.
Balti King - lol, the most digusting food ever eaten, you must be totally hammered to think that what they serve is anything near edible.
S6 D.I.Y 16-11-2008, 18:04 butlers has to be seconed would be jaflonf
Olive Bar on Div. Street, really lovely food, good atmosphere, prices cheaper than other tapas restaurants in sheffield.
oddly, while we have a small handful of overpriced and overhyped restaurants (most mentioned in this thread) you can always get good food at places such as Olive, Dev Cat, Bungalows and Bears and the Old House without the pretentious overload or bankruptcy
cheekychimp 16-11-2008, 21:43 La Scala at Millhouses is fab, and they do the best, most tender steak. Shame that Marco's nearby gets more press - La Scala is little, cosy, family owned and they come to your table and get all excited about the fish they've got that day!
I second that, La Scala is lovely, also the Dilshad in Woodseats and Everest on Chesterfield Road, both fantastic.
shazzamattazza 17-11-2008, 11:17 Balti King In Broomhill is fantastic.
You obviously didn't hear about them getting fined for having dirty kitchens.
Personally I like my curry without mice droppings in them.
Not a restaurant but I second Coach and Horses, Dronfield by far the best food around.
kitkatmoo 17-11-2008, 14:57 Balti King is wrong on every level and has been certainly the full 8 years I've been in Sheffield!
Marcos is good but overpriced and I've heard before coming on here that La Scala is just as good but significantly cheaper. Thyme used to be good in Crosspool but I've not been since Richard split the restaurant into two. Can definitely second Olive bar on Division Street.
Ater an experience yesterday though, whilst not a restuarant as such, I highly DO NOT recommend you have sunday dinner at Fox House (Hathersage Road). We were told 40 minute wait for a table, which turned out to be an hour an a half, a further 40 minute wait for the food and when it turned up it was dreadful.
JoanCrawford 17-11-2008, 15:04 Yay, another vote for La Scale. I'm going to have to find an excuse to visit again now! Have also heard negative things about Fox House, along the lines of it used to be a great place to finish up after a walk but now it's worth walking an extra mile to another pub...
Also The Milestone is a fab place for brunch, newspapers at the weekend.
JohnnyMathis 17-11-2008, 15:11 As long as you don't mind leaving Sheffield, Derbyshire has some great places to eat, all within decent driving distances.
The Walnut club, Plough or Scotsmans pack in Hathersage are all great.
There's plenty of nice places in Bakewell, and the Maynard at Grindleford was always good.
But there must be somewhere to eat in Sheffield isn't there??? Is it that bad nowadays?
La Civetta in Hillsborough (assuming it's stil there) was one of our favorite places when we lived in Sheffield, though that was 5 years ago now.
Mad Hatter 17-11-2008, 16:39 Greenhead House in Chapeltown
Always had superb food there, fantastic intimate atmosphere, not too expensive but expensive enough ;)
Agree with others about La Scala
iamdonkey 17-11-2008, 16:42 naploneon casino next to dog track. very reasonably price, top quality food and 'different atmosphere'
I really like Siam Inter on London rd., I went there the day I got back from Thailand, and the food is spot on - also must agree with an earlier post mentioning the food at the Devonshire Cat - everything I've eaten there has been fantastic.
gal-tray 17-11-2008, 17:03 my favourite is chez la lou at commonside, walkley the food is beautiful, the only problem with it its a bit small and pokey, but nice for a romantic meal.
PreferNot 17-11-2008, 17:24 aaah I tend to get around the restaurants in Sheffield being a food addict and all.. I have to say I always used to love the Ranmoor Tandoori .. but I recently wen to Jinnah in Ecclesfield and my goodness their food was fantastic!! So I am voting Jinnah as the best! :)

I deal with a few really good restaurants, the genral problem is the council charge a massive rent tax etc to the restaraunts especially in S1 area so they then need to make big proffits to survive which means not the best chefs or not the best ingridients, if Sheffield wants world class the council need to encorage it not throttle it !
Dan_Ashcroft 17-11-2008, 18:44 South Asian - Seven Spices, Cafe Guru, Saffron Club
East Asian - Wasabisabi, Mei's
Italian - BB's, (Maso also used to be great, it's successor Cafe Nova is ok)
Tapas/Med - Platillos, Parthenonas, The Mediterranean Restaurant
Generally you can't go wrong anywhere on London Road - definitely the best eating area in the city.
heeleyrachel 17-11-2008, 19:57 Does anyone know if picolino is any good in terms of value and food? (Near winter gardens in town centre)

from that list i can tell you know nothing about food or quality, Do you eat tesco value brand at home so food from those places is good?

I was thinking town centre £15-30 per head budget, you know, the like the other 98% of people can occasional afford to go to.
We are not all posh people from Whirlow who want their game freshly shot for the table. Ethnic food just too common for you?
I actually work in hospitality, including sourcing catering.
Are you a Spurs supporter Dan_Ashcroft?
Dan_Ashcroft 17-11-2008, 21:09 Are you a Spurs supporter Dan_Ashcroft?
No, a Sheffield side (probably a mistake to say which). Nor do I work for Sugar Ape magazine - that programme has ruined my life!
ukpetes31 17-11-2008, 21:32 Spinrocs at Crookes is good food and not many kids go in
Artifice 17-11-2008, 22:01 East Asian - Wasabisabi, Mei's
If that's Mei's next to Pollard's Coffee Shop in town- the one downstairs- I noticed a sign outside saying they're packing it in at the end of the month.
Sorry to question your recommendation, but the first and only time I went there I couldn't taste the food for the smell of drains. Disgusting place.

Yes, on Charles Street, that's the one. That's sad. It was a bit dingy going down the stairs there (I never noticed any smell problem on my visits) but the food was always absolutely superb - possibly the best Chinese I've had west of Urumqi. They never seemed to get much of a non-Chinese crowd in though.

Wasabisabi hasn't been rated yet, which is why it is zeroed out.
That website is environmental health inspection ratings btw, nothing to do with the food, environment, staff etc.
Fastfood places always tend to come highest on those sort of things as they have very high level policies (hand washing training courses etc) in place.
I won’t bore you with the details, but imagine you go and book a table at Cafe guru for a birthday party. You collect and pay a deposit..............However on the night lots of people can’t make it for one reason or another.
Now the last thing I expected was for the management to be extremely unprofessional and rude about it........ but they were!
I went to Akbars the other night, that was pretty amazing. There was free entertainment too, in the form of a fight :)
Sheffield (I'm not from here) seems to have a lot of excellent curry houses and good Italians. Good Italian restaurants, I mean.
Akbars is not one of them, I think it isn't that good. When I tried the curyy I ordered it was one of the worst I have had, I even complained and the manager said curries taste different when you've had a few drinks. I had one bottle....... whatever he was intending by that I'm not sure.
I have no idea why lots of people like it.
Can someone please explain why they think the food is good.
ps I spend half of my life in Bradford

Not a fan in the slightest, I'm afraid. I used to live round the corner and tried it on several occasions. It's not terrible, just rather bland, in my opinion. Much prefer the cheaper - and rather shabby! - Clay Oven. I know a lot of people who share my opinion, and I know an equal number who share yours!
I love Rafters - been going there for years and am yet to be disappointed. Their bread and butter pudding is brilliant!

crookesey 26-01-2009, 16:56 A question please.
Many Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants and take aways advertise that they serve 'traditional/genuine Indian cuisine'. Most people (other than Asians) wouldn't have a clue what countries food they are about to partake of when they walk into a so called 'Indian' restaurant, is this fair?
I assume that most 'Indian' restaurants and take aways in Sheffield are Pakistani or Bangladeshi owned, but which is which is anybodies guess (well it is to me). Both of these nations are predominantly Muslim, and I'm assuming that there are many differences between Muslim and Hindu food, pork and beef come to mind for a start.
I know that Nirmals on Glossop Road is Indian, are there anymore genuine Indian restaurants in Sheffield?

Clay Oven is owned by a Goan chap.
The Milestone at Kelham Island. Been a number of times and not only is the food excellent but so is the service.
brianthedog 27-01-2009, 12:49 The Milestone at Kelham Island. Been a number of times and not only is the food excellent but so is the service.
I like the Milestone, but I always feel as if the interior was designed by a B&Q employee. Not quite as good as it could/should have been.
I like the Milestone, but I always feel as if the interior was designed by a B&Q employee. Not quite as good as it could/should have been.
I think the interior is quite good. Very basic, airy, doesn't detract from the great food.
brianthedog 27-01-2009, 13:38 I agree that the interior is very basic. But for somewhere to be basic it has to be high quality - this is where I feel it's lacking. Stud walls and cheap fittings really make somewhere feel cheap; more like the interior of a Barratt box than a quality bar.
A question please.

If Hindu and Beef comes to mind, you are very much mistaken.
The Cow is sacred to Hindu’s and would NEVER be eaten!
If you are looking for genuine Indian food, perhaps a trip to India is in order!
Surprisingly in India you also find a mixture of Muslim’s, Hindu’s, Christian’s and Buddhist’s.
