Does anyone know whether you can ask for a replacement if on the copy certificate the bride`s father`s name and occupation are unreadable?
Would a second copy be any better?

I doubt another one would be any better if the rest of the writing is ok, unless you think it may be a fault of the copying machine in which case ring the Record Office up and ask advice.
Some people become fairly skilled in interpreting difficult to read writing. It would perhaps be worthwhile posting a scan of it on the Sheffield Indexers message forum at http://www.sheffieldindexers.com/ . There may be someone there who might be able to read it.

Thanks John, that`s what I was wondering. I actually didn`t know if it was a copy of an original, or whether someone was writing out a copy on request (if you see what I mean)

If you applied for the certificate from the local register office where the marriage took place then it will be the original, with the bride and grooms actual signatures.(always ask for a photocopy)
If you applied to the GRO then it is handwritten by the local register office and submitted to the General Register Office. The copies from the GRO are actually a transcription.
If it is a Sheffield church then you can view the original at the archives as long as it is not a register office wedding.

Thanks Tuppie, I personally haven`t seen the certificate yet. I was asking on behalf of someone who contacted me as we are researching the same name. I have asked her to scan it and send it to me. I may even be able to read it myself as I am quite experienced in reading poor or old handwriting. If I can`t then the next ideal would be for it to be at a church because as you say I can maybe see the original.
