I was wondering what is the best knitting advice that anyone's given you is, who gave it to you. (Not what advice you'd give other people, that's a whole other thread.)

Mine would be:

Wool4brains, when I was worrying about something tricky pointed out "You like knitting, and if goes wrong you get to do more of it." or something similar.

The previous Rowan lady at John Lewis, who is also left handed, who told me to always increase and decrease three stitches in to make mattress stitch easier, and shaping neater.

One of mine would be when knitting in the round, knit the tail of the cast on with the first few stitches of the first row to give a lovely smooth finish :)

You really can't beat mattress stitch when making up

and

Blocking really does help make things fit together better and makes things look more finished

I can't remember who told me any of the above though :suspect:

I will try the increase/ decrease 3 stitches in next time (I did notice that 2 stitches in was better than the 1 normally recommended in patterns, but still I blindly follow patterns )

I can still remember my nanny telling me know to battle with the needles and yarn, and relax into the flow, and it would all be fine. It helped me to go from super tight tension, to much better and able to get the needle into the stiches tension in no time.

When we were all knitting together at school, we didn't follow patterns, even though we were actually doing pretty complicated stuff. We just followed verbal instructions, so my most useful thing from that far back has to be, watch and learn. Still picking up hints and tips some 35+ years later from various sources.

Mine, from who knows who, was, do what suits you. If you are comfortable with doing something a certain way, don't feel pressured into doing something another way because someone has said it's wrong, even though you end up with the same outcome.

Mine is similar to Wheezy's and I think it possibly came from knitbird who said it doesn't matter how you knit (I knit weirdly) as long as it works for you and it the end product is as it's meant to be.

Do what suits you and how it suits you and bu**er everyone else. As told to me by mum, nan and Mr Radish.

My seven year-old niece gave me some advice over the weekend.
When you are knitting it is better if you are not watching High School Musical, as it is too exciting, and you might forget if you were knitting or purling.
