View Full Version : Road Tax - When to purchase it?
Skatiechik 26-05-2005, 10:01 Just a quickie, if I buy Road Tax on Saturday am I losing a month or gaining a few days? (Car is currently SORN)
I don't want to lose a months worth of tax.
Hope people see what I am asking :)
neither, they date it from the start of the next month and it won't be valid until then, although you'd probably get away with it and so gain a few days.
Skatiechik 26-05-2005, 10:09 Not good then, no bank holiday driving for me then :( Not going to risk driving it without tax if they date if from the 1st June.
you can get it issued after the 15th to start the next month. I do that and immediately change the disc. To a policeman or traffic warden seeing it they would assume that yours was the same as mine, although technically it wouldn't be. Upto you though, very law abiding if you wait until the 1st.
I usually get mine a week before the expiry date of the old one.
I hate waiting in the PO queues behind all those who leave it to the last minute.
i think to get it early you have to have tax already and get the dvla reminder notice thing, otherwise you have to wait until the start of the month for it

Do the renewal online.
Takes 5 mins, no PO queuing, no need to provide MOT/insurance docs - all done from them referencing the relative databases.
Disk arrives about 3 days later in post.
It might be very law abiding not to drive without a valid tax disc but it is also a requirement of most people's insurance agents.
Which means your insurance will be invalid for as long as your tax disk is.

I will be waiting, I wouldn't risk, it just isn't worth it, especially if I have an accident.
It is in for its MOT today, so lets hope it passes. It hasn't been driven since October. :o

Can't see anything on the DVLA website about on-line applications for tax disk.

Tax your car online here (http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/) but only if you got the renewal form with the reference number in the top right hand corner.
I first did mine in November, then again in April. My girlfriend didn't get the ref on her reminder, so maybe it is a trial period for selected drivers.
The site does say that insurance and MOT is checked automatically via database links, so if your car is under MOT it shouldn't exclude you from applying online.
lol, you think that every little garage that issues mot's registers it on a central database.
that's the long term plan, it hasn't been implemented yet. They've only just managed to get car tax onto a database system, and that's done through the post office, not independant traders.
Skatiechik 27-05-2005, 16:28 Well car passed its MOT, went straight to the post office to purchase some tax starting from next month and apparent;y you can't do it more than two days before the start of the month  I have to back tomorrow to do it.
I've heard the DVLA are in town at the moment near Wybourne and removing cars with out of date tax discs.
there are at least ten vehicles in our town without tax and the cars have been left to rust.

Only 10? The tip of the iceberg surely.

Don't have the new style MOT so can't apply online - looks like the post office queue for me:(
