View Full Version : The Simpsons keeps getting censored

In the last week Channel 4 have shown at least 2 episodes of The Simpsons where scenes have been cut or edited to remove something controversial.
They were shown last year in their entirety, has the world changed so much that we now can't handle it?
This kind of (in my opinion) pointless censorship really annoys me and nobody in the real world will listen to me so i am having my moan here.
Thanks for listening

Episode: The Cartridge Family

Marge picks the gun up off the floor and moves to put it the bin. When she catches sight of her reflection with the gun, she likes it and decides to keep the gun and puts it in her purse. She then walks out with a cocky swagger.
The bit where Marge decides she likes the gun and puts it in her purse was removed and the rest edited to make it appear that she actually put the gun in the bin.
The scene of marge leaving just looked wierd as there was now no reason for the walk.

Episode: The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons

During Apus arranged marriage Homer crashes through the fence dressed as Ganesh and claims that he is angry and all will die unless the wedding is cancelled.
The dialogue was cut completely so Homer now crashes through the fence and immediately gets stuck up a tree.

There was a third example but i cant find proof on the net.

We're not allowed anything too close to reality or possible sensitive subjects. Naughty public.
Why don't they just set up a channel to dump all the 'offensive stuff' and let people choose if they watch it.

We've got an episode of the Simpsons on video (that's how old it is!) where Bart keeps saying b*****d all the way through it. Bet that never makes it on to the telly now!

Is it just Channel 4 who do it or are they doing the same on Sky aswell?

All the networks showing the Simpsons edit it. It's most likely that CH4 edit it fit the running slot as opposed to some mystical PC brigade censorship quest. When the BBC showed it they cut the length from 22mins to 20 so as to fit it more easily into their schedules.

Channel 4 most likely edited those jokes out to be able to get the maximum amount of adverts in.

E4's just as ****ing bad, they edit every little thing in Scrubs that has anything remotely to do with sex, same with Friends etc.

Sky have edited an episode before now, the one where Homer runs for Garbage Commissioner. I've seen this episode loads of times, usually on the 6pm slot however once it was shown after 10pm and in the uncut version both Mr Burns and a member of U2 say the word "******s"

OK swear filter won't let me type it so lets just say it rhymes with hankers

The worst example i've seen is after Princess Diana died they edited the word "paparazzi" out, the epidode with Mr Burns looking for Bobo and he gets photographed in Maggie's sandpit. I've yet to see the episode where it still isn't muted. Silly.

In the last week Channel 4 have shown at least 2 episodes of The Simpsons where scenes have been cut or edited to remove something controversial.

I mentioned this on another thread.

The biggest gripe is that these episodes have already been shown twice on C4 and at least twice on BBC2 and not edited.

Another example is where Homer and Marge try to spice up their love life and book into a country B&B. Homer is discussing it with Lenny and Carl in the power station car park where Lenny says "Can I come?" Homer replies "Not really, it'd be quite awkward what with the sex and all".

They also cut the scene out of "Cartridge Family" where the prostitute outside the Motel asks Bart if he's "looking for a good time".

There was also the halloween special last week where the censor is reading the script for the episode says "hmm, I think we can do without the crack pipe".

Paul O'Grady regularly over-runs, are they cutting Simpsons because of this?

could it be that they have picked up american shows that were cut for US airings?

I contacted C4. This is their reply:

Thank you for contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries regarding THE SIMPSONS.

We apologise for the delay in response, we are currently working through a
backlog of emails as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, due to some of the content of programmes such as THE
SIMPSONS, edits are required for broadcast prior to 9pm; we try to keep this
to a minimum and to make sure the main plot points are adhered to; however,
this can be quite difficult.

The Office Of Communications (OFCOM) Programme Code, by which Channel 4 is
bound, does not impose an absolute ban on the use of strong language.
However, when it is used, it must be defensible in terms of context and
authenticity.

OFCOM have set 9pm as being the cut-off point for when parents should take
responsibility for what children are to watch on television. After 9pm, it
is to be expected that programmes will be of a more adult nature. Copies of
the Programme Code can be obtained by contacting OFCOM, we are sure from
these you will be able to see for yourself how closely monitored and
regulated this area truly is.

We apologise if you feel that this is ruining the programme, please be
assured your complaint has been noted and logged. The log is distributed
throughout Channel 4.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us. We appreciate all
feedback from our viewers; complimentary or otherwise.

Regards,

Nicky Jones

That's the one where Homer finds he has a long lost brother who is really rich. His brother is a ******* (born out of wedlock) and so Bart says that he can say ******* as much as he likes because it's the true meaning of the word.

As it says in alchresearch's letter back, it's ok to use offensive words (by OFCOM standards) if they are in the proper context.

As for the other cuts, they are all down to individual perception. I personally think it's stupid that they've been cut.

Further feedback:

Unfortunately we can not provide you with the pre watershed editing policies
of the BBC or Sky. However, I can say we put a great deal of effort into
ensuring that all programming transmitted before the 9pm watershed is
appropriate for the time of day, particularly in the case of THE SIMPSON'S
which we know is watched by younger viewers . In light of this younger
audience, Channel 4's policy is to edit out any visual content or wording
which is deemed inappropriate for the time of day.

We apologise if this has affected your enjoyment of the programme. Please be
assured you comments have been logged and forwarded for the attention of
those responsible for this series.

On tonight's episode they censored the word "slut", even though originally it was only a muffled expression referring to Mrs Krabappel

Ahh I thought something must have been missing as they made a glug glug glug joke about the first teacher but then nothing about mrs krabappel.

It is a bit stupid when they will happily show the uncut versions as well, at seemingly random times. I'm not convinced that the 9pm watershed has anything to do with it.

Friends is fairly bad for this, but (luckily) I've seen the uncut versions so often I know most of the bits that have been cut out.

It's actually quite pathetic and shows a disregard for an audience that has always watched the Simpsons because of it's comedic and subversive nature, rather than the fact it's just a cartoon.

Slut!
