I am not an expert in routerology, which I believe can be a complex subject. I am thinking of replacing my desktop and also getting a netbook to go with it. I have not used a router before, so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Just remember to avoid any that also contain an ADSL modem as they are for BT phone lines, not Virgin cable.

Virgin Media give you one free. At least they gave me one. It's Netgear and works just fine.

If you can't get a free one out of them I have a spare going free.

Yes, I just checked and you do get a free router that's already set up for Virgin -

Thanks Alastair, much appreciated. I don't have need of one until I choose my new hardware - I think I have the L range broadband, so should qualify (I can always threaten to switch to a different ISP if they won't offer to give me one - this I think should do the trick).

Since our household got a router and we all got laptops, we don't actually need to talk to each other anymore. :D

To be honest I would seriously reconsider whether you need a desktop once you have a router.

I've got two old laptops, but for everyday use I prefer a desktop because of the large screen size (currently 19") and also like a full size keyboard. These days though, computers are cheap enough to buy one of each.

With regard to the not talking, buying a couple of laptops seems a good way for a guy to get some peace, especially if he has a yappy partner.

I agree, I much prefer a full size keyboard and large screen, and also the fact that the height of the screen can be changed.

You're likely to develop all sorts of posture and RSI-type problems if you always use a laptop, unless it's on something that allows you to sit up properly. I don't want to sound like someone from RoSPA or owt, but anyone who has these type of problems will tell you what a bugger they are.
