I am interested in any information about the Portass family and their business interests in Sheffield.
They manufactured machine tools and motor cars called H.F.G around Heeley and Abbeydale.
I know during World War 1 they manufactured aero parts and even built around 20 complete aircraft.
I believe the family home was at Norton, possibly Norton House, Chantry House or Norton Grange.
I am helping the son of James Portass to research the family tree.

At Sheffield History (http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk), Map #21 in the 'Sheffield Places - Their History' section shows the Broadfield Road addresses in 1952. Google Earth shows that there are buildings with the same footprint still in existence. (for the Sheffield History site you need to subscribe (free) to see the images).

That is a great start. My father was born on Wake Road and was a school pal of James. I think we are on the right track.
THANKS
