View Full Version : My computer is driving me mad roughy101 26-05-2005, 07:37 mycomp is so slow, it keeps telling me my virtual memory is low:help: :help: Dj_Shadowman 26-05-2005, 07:52 Maybe because its running a lot of stuff in the background - press CTRL +ALT+DELETE then shut down any applications and processes's that are not needed. Should sort it out. hade 26-05-2005, 08:09 Also, have a look in your system stray, the icons in the bottom right corner. Right click and exit the ones you don't need to be running. Vini 26-05-2005, 13:26 try extending your VM by going to: start > settings > control panel > system > advanced [performance] > settings > advanced [virtual memory] > change > set it (system permitting) to custom and something like: initial 500 maximum 1500 or more if you have the spec to do so. roughy101 31-05-2005, 18:49 thanks for your answers , also can someone tell e how to defrag:loopy: tinker 31-05-2005, 20:07 Originally posted by roughy101 thanks for your answers , also can someone tell e how to defrag:loopy: i would also like to know that can someone please tell us Dj_Shadowman 31-05-2005, 20:21 go to start - accesories - system tools - disk defragmenter.....easy ! sccsux 31-05-2005, 20:25 Originally posted by tinker i would also like to know that can someone please tell us Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Dis Defragmenter Then select which drive to defrag, and away you go. Works upto Windows 2K (don't know if it's in the same place with XP as I don't/won't use it)! If you keep getting restarts due to disk writes, try turning AV off (or boot into safe mode;)). <Ninja edit>beaten to it</ninja> vidster 31-05-2005, 23:57 Originally posted by sccsux Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Dis Defragmenter Then select which drive to defrag, and away you go. [EDIT] Even better still....Turn off the page file too! davididreal 01-06-2005, 06:26 Just a quick note - If its been a long time or never expect it to take a while - it gets faster the more frequently you do it. Also if you keep seeing it restart because drive contents have changed disable the screen saver and any other programs that may be running - its obviously best done off line with as many programs shut down as possible. Anyone disagrees let me know I stand to be educated. alchresearch 01-06-2005, 13:16 Don't forget to do a disk clean before you defrag. It gets rid of all the temporary files and web pages and will keep all the free space together. vidster 01-06-2005, 14:05 Just as a side note: All this defrag topic might get people all excited about defragging and tempt them to do it every few days. IMO it's not a good idea to defrag more than once a week. Any more than that and things like your pre-fetch list will not have time to build up......Result.....Slower computer! Just my thoughts. Feel free to tell me if i'm wrong  tinker 01-06-2005, 18:58 Originally posted by roughy101 thanks for your answers , also can someone tell e how to defrag:loopy: hope you managed to defrag your computer roughy , i did mine it took 8 hours but is now working a lot faster , thanks to those who gave advice .. depoix 01-06-2005, 20:07 you could set it on your task scheduler, along with scan disk. roughy can you pm when you get time ? melthebell 01-06-2005, 20:57 also type msconfig into the run box and click start up, theres always loads of rubbish you dont need starting everytime your computer starts, untick all the crap ones. |
