Hi folks

A couple of times whilst I've been on a night out in the Hillsborough Hotel I've noticed people knitting. It has always been one person within a group and it struck me as a bit bizarre and strange to go to the pub with some friends and sit there knitting.

But then I thought that it's no different from what me and my friends do on a Sunday evening. We go to the pub and read the papers. We still chat about stuff but Sunday evenings are a bit more mellow and relaxed than other evenings.

Do any SF knitters take their knitting to the pub? If so do you suffer from the same problem I do after a few drinks, when I end up reading the same paragraph twice. Do you end up knitting when you should be purling? Do you have to unravel it all the next morning and start again?

Wonder if you've spotted a fellow forummer? :suspect:

I've knitted with a glass of wine at my side and suffered minimal ill effects, though I would assume inebriation and sharp pointy sticks don't generally make for a pleasant combination.

I used to knit everywhere- pubs, restaurants, cinemas, wherever. If you want to get your jumper done quickly then it comes down to putting in the time to get it done and if you aren't at home much then why not take it with you? If you can multitask then knitting and chatting at the same time isn't really an issue is it?

Ah, that might be me. I also knit on the bus and on the tram, especially if I'm on a knit against time, and under pressure to finish something. And now that I can knit in pubs without it smelling smokey, why not?

A decent pint and a knit all adds up to a perfect evening in my book!

And if it's not me, then I shall keep my eyes peeled for a fellow knitter.

Come and say hello next time I'm there!

Well it could have been you a few Sundays ago but there was a different knitter in the Hillsborough Hotel last night. That's 3 different women I've seen knitting in there recently.

The point about cigarette smoke is a good one. The stench lingers for ever and I couldn't imagine anything worse than getting a lovely knitted gift only to find it reaking of cigs.

Ooh, maybe we could start a knitting group in there, I like that pub! As purlyqueen said, a decent pint and a knit is a perfect evening!
Doens't it get a bit busy in there on a Friday though - there wouldn't be much room to knit. I suppose I'd have to get there early to get a seat :)

The last time I saw a knitter in there was Thursday which is generally really quiet. Sundays can get really busy. Wouldn't know about other nights :)

If you check on the net on statistics sites you`ll see that 94% of knitters want the death penalty to be re introduced to the country.

This isnt because they have any interest in the law or think that society has gone to pot because if you look closely you`ll see that they only want the guillotine back so they can sit around it cackling insanely at the execution as they knit a nice scarf.

When I first joined SF I made the mistake of posting this pic on the knitting groups thread. (http://www.scifi-toyz.com/guillotine.jpg) and the sound of clicking needles and insane cackling was all that could be heared of the ladies of the group for the next three days.

Ah, it was me this thursday as I was finishing a christmas present. And as I've got a few more things to do (and less than 3 weeks to do them in - help!) I shall no doubt be there next thursday, needles, and beer, in hand.

If you pop down Becky B, come and say hello. I tried a few years ago to start a knitting group in there (pre no-smoking ban but they had a good no smoking section). But no-one turned up! So please do feel free to bring your needles along. And that goes for you too Taxman!

Right. What time? I decided last week I'm going to knit my mum a scarf for Christmas, so I haven't left much time (especially as it's taken me a week and several false starts to decide on a pattern...):D

Right, I'm taking the plunge.

I'll be in the Hillsborough Hotel, with my needles, from about 8.30pm this thursday. You'll be able to spot me, as I'll be the one...knitting! (or crocheting, it depends...)

See you there fellow knitters!

With all that yarn hidden under your bed, you've no excuse! Get those needles out!

Well, you're in the right place. A knitting group in your pub. Buy a few pints and ask them to get you started on socks (I'm a size 6, and quite like turquoise and chocolate variegated yarn - couple of skeins of Artyarns Ultramerino 157 from Purlescence and my Christmas pressie will be sorted :D).
