View Full Version : Premature Babies - Any Parents
Just wondered if there were any parents of Premature Babies on the Forum?
I had a little boy in 2003 born at 28 weeks.

Hi Cath
I had twins Tomas and Grace at 35 weeks in 2003, so a little older than Corey. Tomas weighed 4lb14oz and Grace 5lb 8oz - not bad weights really for twins. Like Corey, Grace went to NICU for a couple of weeks. I don't think anything or anyone can prepare you for it. Its a very emotional time.
I had a look at your website which is really lovely- although I did shed a few tears when I saw Corey in the NICU video. It brought a few things back to me. Re the cares - I always hated putting the pink sponges in Graces mouth during her cares, I thought they were too big. (Anyone reading this who hasn't experienced NICU would have to see the video to know what I mean) Anyway Cath he's a real cutie. And mine - there georgous two years olds who keep me on my toes.:)

Yea i know what you mean about the sponges!
As he got a bit older it wan't top bad but when he was only 2lb i thought they would hurt him, but the staff assured me they squashed up in the mouth and Corey did actually enjoy it as he got older.
My sister had twins at 35 wks of similar sizes.
Glad they are doing well!

What an absolutely gorgeous family you are! Wonderful site and wonderful memories for Corey to look at when he is older. He is a lucky boy. Lots of best wishes to all of you.
What a gorge website,, you should be so proud of yourselves! My brother was born ten weeks early in 1989, weighing only about 2lbs, he was in intensive care for months, but apporaching his 16th birthday now he is doing fantastic.
Your message made me think just how lucky i am to have a brother. Thanks, and good luck.
sparklesista 25-05-2005, 21:19 What a wonderful site - your son is such a cutie!
Watching the video of him in ICU started me off crying  and now my boyfriend is wondering what the hell is wrong with me! :D
I'm just so glad he is ok, love to you both and your little angel :)
citygirl 25-05-2005, 21:35 Your babe is absolutely lovely.
My little lad was born at 34 1/2 weeks and had to spend time in the special care baby unit at NGH. It was a very emotional time. He's 6 now and doing absolutely fine.
thomsongirl 25-05-2005, 21:36 My Mom used to work on a Premature Baby unit up to about 2001. I used to pop up on the odd occasion when we fetched her after her shift. The babies were so small and looked so fragile. She used to get cards from some of them that she nursed and sometimes was invited to their 1st birthday parties. I know it meant a lot to her as she did get attached to to babies, as they could be nursing them for quite some time.
Lovely website and all the best to you and your family.
Thanks for promoting Tommys on your website..I promote Tommys through GAYE (Give as you Earn) at work.
I support this charity because I was fortunate to have 3 healthy full term babies.
:D
my daughter was born at 36 1/2 weeks in november. she spent 36 hours in scbu, i was told she had a drip for antibiotics by the nurse on the ward i was on and when i got there she had tubes coming out of her everywhere! i was really upset but the scbu nurses were fantastic and were very supportive. my baby was on the high dependancy ward and there were some really poorly babies there! one baby was only 30 weeks when born and was 3lb.
EDIT: i looked at your site after posting, what a gorgeous baby. he is so lovely.
Don_Kiddick 26-05-2005, 08:01 My son was born at 33wks & had 15 days on SCBU.
He's 11 now & a fine athletic boy, with a wonderful 'nature'.
He has a diagnosis of autism & attends a special school, but is doing well.
He goes to Taekwondo where he's ready to be tested for his red belt.
He's very loving & caring and has a wicked sense of humor.
I cannot remember what I used to do before he came a long.
He's one of my 2 bestest ever friends.
FairyNormal 26-05-2005, 09:32 My son was born at 35 weeks but weighed in at a whopping 7lb 14oz!! He looked a real fraud in SCBU as he almost filled the incubator. However, he had very bad jaundice and couldn't suck so had to be tube fed.
He does have some mild learning/motor learning problems along with Tourettes Syndrome, OCD and possibly ADHD?Autistic spectrum problems (they are still deciding!)
I do wonder if any of his difficulties were caused by his early arrival.
What a georgeous little darling! And a fantastic site.
I had twin boys in the early hours of 18th April 2003 at 35 weeks. They came weighing 5lb 4oz and 4lb 8oz.
We were one of the lucky ones, the little un' only spent the night in special care and was brought to me the next day. We all went home the day after that.
Now they're big bruisers that keep me on my toes!
Best wishes to you and yours.
Lucy_Smith 26-05-2005, 15:03 My cousin was born at 32 weeks, after her loser of a father caused my auntie to go into premature labour.
She was on a ventilator for weeks but is now a happy healthy seven year old.
Just want to say how brave all of you parents of premature babies are. I don't know how I would cope seeing what my auntie had to go through but some how you do for the sake of your precious children. You have all of my respect and best wishes for the future of your beautiful children :)
Seems there are alot of us about.
Hope all the babies are doing well now. :D
Plain Talker 26-05-2005, 17:40 My aunt had two surviving prem babies.
my cousin (F) was born in 1973, at jessops, she was about 30 weeks on, and weighed in at "4lbs and change".... she spent 6 weeks in SCBU, and, although we are so grateful to the SCBU for saving her life, it was hard for my aunt, as she was not allowed to interact with my cousin:- my cous' was six whole weeks old before my aunt was even allowed to hold her/feed her.she was told nothing about what was going on with the baby's treatment, or anything.
My cousin is now a beautiful 32 yr old.
Fifteen years, and umpteen lost babies later, my aunt had another preemie.
The experience this time round was so different, they were involved in his care, and, very imortantly, they got to know what was going on.
he was about a 26 week baby... he was born in the November, and was not due till February.
He weighed just 2lb 2 oz:- that's one kilo, the same as a bag of sugar.
The SCBU saved his life, too.
He didn't come home till he was nearly four months, he had bad breathing difficulties. (he literally kept forgetting to breathe!) He is now a strapping 18 yr old.
My youngest sister was in Jessops' SCBU, too. She was only a week or two "early", (these days she would have been technically "at term") but she was what's called "light for dates". She weighed much less than she ought to have done, for how far along my mother was.
She spent three weeks in SCBU. I remember that she was like a little skinned rabbit.... No flesh on her tiny bones, and all red.
There's many folk have a lot to thank jessops' SCBU for!

I know what your aunt went through with the not holding her baby for a long time.
Because my son was so ill he was nearly 2 months old before i got my first cuddle!
And coincidentally, my son was also born in Nov due in Feb and weighed 2lb 2oz!
I can't thank the staff at Jessops enough!
i do not know if its the same in jessop's but i had my little girl in Glasgow and we went onto a normal ward while the babies were 2 floors up, i found this hard as there were 4 to a room and the other 3 had healthy babies keeping me awake and it was upsetting as they would not talk to me as they thought my baby had died!!!
the scbu nurses and doctors do a fabulous job in helping you bond with your baby no matter how ill and are very supportive. my little girl hasspent some time in sheffield childrens as she was rushed in with suspected meningitis, but luckily it was nothing(still dont know what it was!)
cobaltblue 26-05-2005, 17:55 CathS your wee boy is lovely !!
Mine was born 6 weeks early, he had an irregular heart beat, had to be fed by drip and was so jaundiced he looked like he had a sun tan! He had to stay in the SCBU for a few weeks and it was so hard coming out of the hospital without him.
They always said as a premature baby I should expect his development to be that little bit slower than other babies/children of the same age and that he would be a little smaller. He walked, no ran at 8 months and has always been the biggest in his class!! In fact my 'wee' boy is now a 6ft 3 giant and still growing :D
Savbaby, it was exactly the same. I was 2 floors above the Neonatal unit surrounded by mothers and there babies, it was awful. I could hear them crying and all i wanted to do was hold my baby!
Cobaltblue, my son had bad jaundice too and was a very strange green colour!
Glad your little boy(or should i say big boy!) did so well!
