I looked on the internet and I found this Harry Potter sock yarn. I like the look of it and I thought others might do to. I am hoping to knit with it once Jill has got it in at The Wool Baa (hint hint). Thank you and good day. :)

LOL Well at least Ron's colour is sort of ginger-ish, and Tonks' colour matches her hair too, at least when it's in its pink phase. I thought they might do the Hogwarts house colours, but I suppose you could do those yourself with a stripy sock pattern.

Warner's decision to not release The Half Blood Prince film 'til next summer has buggered up the yarn/film tie-in, though I don't suppose that will harm the sales at all.

Pardon the pun,but i think it is all a bit cheesy. It looks nice enough, but, well i don't know really, can't explain it. Is it just another thing along the lines of buy the book, buy the dvd, buy the t shirt, buy the toys etc etc? It's not the yarn i'm questioning, it's all the corporate tie ins that lie behind it. Phew! Serious.

I agree. It seems like a cynical marketing exercise to me. Maybe yarn is the new MacDonalds film tie-in Happy Meal :hihi:.

I think the connection is a bit dubious, personally - the yarn looks like fairly bog-standard Opal self-patterning to me. Wonder if it's going to be more expensive than the rest of the self-patterning Opal range? :suspect:

OOOH a woolly burger, free circular needles with every Big Mac. Ahem, sorry. I think it could be just a tad more than the usual yarn, but if people want to pay it.........

I remember when I was little using one of my mum's knitting needles as a pretend magic wand, so if they did Harry Potter-themed wand-like DPNs or something, I'd be there. Possibly :hihi: .

This thread has reminded me that I have Stephen Fry reading the last Potter book on CD to pick up from the library  .

I don't like the books, but the yarn is nice. Don't see why it wouldn't be the normal price. If it's guaranteed that I won't have Harry Potter obsessives screeching at my socks then I'll put some on my Christmas list.

Edited to add:

I don't see why the yarn should not be the normal price, as it won't cost the manufacturer any more than producing a new standard range. The yarn quality is the same, and the patterning is fairly standard, just recoloured. Also most new yarns are made in relatively small quantities, so that if they don't sell there won't be warehouses straining at the seams with stock that won't sell. Charging a higher wholesale price for something that cost the standard price to produce does not make sense to me. (Not getting at any small businesses that have to pass price increases on to customers, that would be mean.)

Because I presume it's a limited edition range, made to tie in with the latest film.

ETA: Just checked, and the Harry Potter yarn is limited edition, and it's £8.50 at Modern Knitting (as is Hundertwasser, which is also limited edition) vs £6.80 for the rest of the Opal 4-ply self-patterning.

ETA again: It makes sense from a business perspective because labelling a range 'limited edition' give the product an aura of exclusivity, even if it has little practical consequence for its production. If that product has its inspiration in, like the Opal ranges, a popular artist or set of characters then the potential for the company to capture the corresponding market is further enhanced. The product goes from standard, fairly ugly, self-patterning yarn, to collector's item with a corresponding 'special' price tag. Kerching!

Generally limited edition yarns are the same price. I'm not paying extra to have a still from a film I've got no intention of watching on my ball band. I'll get some Regia silk instead and pretend it's from "Casablanca" for a fiver.

 When I opened the link I was expecting Hogwarts colours and thought that would have been a good idea. I was a little disappointed really at the knitted up yarn swatches.

I wouldn't recognise the hogwarts colours, but I thought the "Hedwig" was pretty. Ho hum, plenty more yarn in the sea. (but wash it first, the salt makes it scratchy)

I love the Harry Potter Socks on this (http://lykkeogloekker.blogspot.com/2008/01/pattern-release-go-gryffindor.html) blog. Hogwarts house colours and emblems too.

ETA: Her Viking Socks are fantastic too.

They are very nice! I really like these (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hogwarts-socks) - sorry for non-Ravelry people, I've not found a non-Ravelry copy yet.

ETA: Just found the Hogwarts socks here (http://www.spinninginstead.blogspot.com/) - see post on 3 October 2008.

Those are brilliant! In fact, I like all those on the blog. I hadn't seen the Durmstrang ones before. Those are going straight into my queue.

In case any Sheffield-based knitters are interested, Jill has the range of Harry Potter Opal sock yarn at the Wool Baa, for £7.50 a ball.

For any non-Sheffield knitters, she also does mail order!

If anyone is interested Natural Dye Studio dyed some house colour yarn in a couple of different yarns for me. You just need to send a message to her if you are interested. I don't mind if it is a cynical ploy re link to film. I am intelligent enough to make an informed choice as to whether I use the yarn or not. It is excellent quality - as all Opal sock yarn is - and the colours are effective and mostly reflect the said character. Yes I do like the HP series of books. But I like using my brain more.

As a confirmed Harry Potter disliker I wasn't at all bothered about some loose connection to the film, and certainly didn't feel like I needed to rush out and stock up on HP related stuff. However the colours are lovely and quite different to the current Opal stock.

I have a ball of "Harry" and think I might have the rest at some point as they are quite unisex (apart from the very pink one) and it'll give us something to fight over in the household.

Now what I'd really love to see is the new Rainforest Opal - with inspired names like "Mallard" (and it really does look like a duck flattened into a foot shape) it is a must. However, I don't think I've ever seen a Mallard in a rainforest :hihi:

Strangely I thought what are they naming a yarn after a steam engine?
