View Full Version : If you could only listen to one singer or band for the rest of your life...

Belle

I set myself this challenge a few months ago and after weeks of thinking about it, I finally came up with an answer.

Imagine that you can only listen to one singer or band or musician or composer, only one, for the rest of your life.

This person or group has to encapsulate for you, happy music and sad music, dancing music and relaxing music, romantic music and passionate music, fun music and serious music, or indeed whatever it is, maybe none of the above, that you really must get out of music.

Then choose that someone who you think will cover all of your moods, you might have to sacrifice something, it isnt easy

I look forward to your answers

For the record I ended up choosing Bryan Adams but he isnt my favourite musician. He is however the person best placed to satisfy more or less all of my musical needs

- Charles Kennedy appeared to say on Desert Island Discs this morning that he couldnt really get along without David Bowie

Predictable, but I'd say The Beatles.

Now you come to mention it, I could have picked them too

I stand with my first choice though, it is no good my changing my mind ten minutes after starting the thread

Not sure they can quite match the funny urban myth about what a lot of people think Bryan was singing at the beginning of Summer of 69 though, but that might have to be a different thread.

Frank Sinatra or Puccini - I'd have to toss a coin, but Frank would probably win.;)

Start the thread and I'll feature a small snippet of the intro. for people to click and listen to! It should only be a few Kb to download.

For me it would have to be Belinda Carlisle.

When she came to the Arena as part of the Here & Now tour she lit the place up!

Frank Zappa -
80 or more albums to collect
from classical to do-wop and everything in between, a master and transcender of genre.

been listening to him probably almost every day for 20 years and there's still a lot I haven't heard.

Oh, and the promise of thousands of hours of unreleased material to come.

Beethoven I think. The ultimate genius.

If not then Nina Simone, if not then Mozart.

Does that make me sound snobby?? I'm not at all, just like classical music a lot. It has everything within it!

Joni Mitchell!

MichaelTravis

Bryan Adams? Belinda Carlisle? For the REST OF YOUR LIFE? It really does take all sorts.

I don't think I could listen to any one artist for the rest of my life - I'd rather have no music at all.

Phan has the right idea though: choose someone with 80 albums and wildly varying styles. Not many of them around though.

If pushed then, I'll say....Chris DeBurgh

Joni Mitchell is just fine ... but I would have to say ...

mr JIMI HENDRIX for me thank you very much !!

Hi List,
Hmmmmm this is a tough question.
Meat Loaf,Elvis, Phil Collins, Guns and Roses, Bette Middler and Shakira come to mind. Hmmm which one?
I could be awake all night wondering who to pick.

I do hope you jest, I would rank Chris D up with Belinda Carlisle and Bryan Adams.

If pushed then I'll say Boo Hewerdine - not very well known singer songwriter who has written some great songs and writes for a lot of top artists. He has so many songs you would never get bored, he just keeps dropping them out, heres one I wrote whilst in the shower, heres one I wrote whilst stuck on the M1, heres one I wrote when I was at the dentist........

After pondering on this one for a while I've decided The Beatles. There's other bands I like more but they haven't got as many albums as The Beatles. I would have to have lots of albums to choose from so that I didn't get too bored of listening to the same songs. And since The Beatles music varies quite a lot across all their albums then that would keep it interesting as well.

You've probably never heard of them, but a band called The Blessing.
As far as I know they only did one album Prince Of The Deep Water.
Musically and lyrically it covers every emotion you can think of and then some.
AWESOME.

Or maybe The Smiths.|

Funny thing is, I love the Smiths to death. I really do. But no way could I listen to them for the rest of my life. I've got about 5 albums on an MP3 disc in the car, and I bet it only gets one full listen all the way through every 6 months or so. Then I've proper had enough.

I'm still pondering who I would choose though. Possibly the Beatles. Someone with a huge back catalogue (like someone else said).

It would be a close run thing between Elvis Costello and Ani DiFranco. Although it would probably be Elv, I would try to make a deal whereby I could substitute a few Ani tracks for the Elv albums after and including the monstrosity he recorded with Burt Bacharach (sp).

Not listened to Yes for a long time, but their albums used never to be off my turntable, many moons ago...
Of contemporary bands, it's the Stereophonics for me, now, they've something for every mood.
But if I really had to listen to only one choice for the rest of my life, it would be a hard call between Beethoven and Bach, but I think Beethoven would win, just... but that means never hearing the Brandenburg concerto's again :(

I have listened to all his music for over 10 years, and loved every minute. His music has got me through some incredibily tough times. His music varys from happy to sad, and some songs are even a little rocky :D which I love.

My shortlist is The Beatles, Kraftwerk and New Order.

I'd probably choose New Order because they are like two bands in one: one which plays rock music and one which plays dance music.

Cavegirl
20-03-2010, 23:00
I can also only get it down to a shortlist. This would be New Model Army, The Waterboys or Sandy Denny.

At the time of having to choose if I was in my radical, raging against social ills mood it would be New Model Army. If I was in my reckless, dancing around the flat mood it would be the Waterboys and if I was in my soulful, creative, contemplative mood it would be Sandy. :D

Could I create a compilation tape?? lol

Bob Marley and the Wailers would do me a treat.Yes not bad, not bad at all but for me to answer the question, "If you could only listen to one singer or band for the rest of your life?" it would have to be the birds singing in the morning. :) They are not the same as us but I love those creatures! So am I getting old - or am I getting young? I dunno, perhaps both.

If however, you include composers, then Definitely = J.S.Bach.
