Are you allowed to have your mobile switched on at work?

We are not allowed to have mobiles with us, they have to be locked away while we work.

The trules say no, you cant have your mobile on, yet every single person does have it on. Including the management.

I don't know if it's allowed but it is indeed switched on!

On silent, of course. I don't think it would go down too well if the quiet of the office was shattered by 'Get Your Freak On' by Missy Elliot :)

We are not supposed to have mobiles on at work but the majority of people I know (including myself) do and have them on silent...!!

Temped at several places where mobiles 'weren't allowed', and people at all of them took them in and (not very discreetly) left 'to go to the toilet' when they were called.
Hey, you need to answer in case it's someone offering you a better job ;)

Surely it depends where you work?

I'd be seriously hacked off if the cashier in the supermarket stopped scanning my shopping to take a call, or if I rang my bank and the person in the call centre put me on hold to answer a mobile call

In an office - if people didn't abuse the privelege of being able to make and take important calls (nattering to mates for ages) the 'no mobile' rule wouldn't be required.

PS - Mine's on 'discrete' in the office ;)

I work at Boots and for security reasons you cant have anything in your pockets apart from your locker key. If you are caught with phone or money you won`t be working there minutes later.

I was in Boots and they tried to throw me out because they thought I had one of thoes old 1980's mobile phones in my pocket, of course it wasn't a phone.

How we laughed at the mistake

It's virtually the rule that you must have one here. We comment on people who don't as it makes it difficult to track them down when they leave their desk. I have my own rather than a company one so that I can choose which one.

I have 2 mobiles on me at work, one on me, one in my car, at ALL times. Same goes for people working for me.

I have my mobile on at work but have the courtesy to have it on a low ring volume, answer it discreetly and then move to an unpopulated part of the office and take it with me when I leave my desk.

Unlike others who scuttle off for a fag leaving their mobile blaring away like an klaxon as it rings for the 12th time in a minute. On their return you get treated to a one sided slack jawed monologue as they call their mates back.

If people need their mobile at work for what ever reason then they should do as I do and not as the dimwit who deems it acceptable to organise their kids nursery/Friday night/tonights tea at 120Db on the next desk to me.
