View Full Version : How much to remove a corrugated cement asbestos garage roof?
Skatiechik 25-05-2005, 15:02 As title says really....
Just wondered how much it costs, as if it is cheap enough may employ someone else to do it instead of ourselves.
I would ring the council - I think specialist dismantling and disposal is required now due to the asbestos materials. I am sure the council will have a list of suitable contractors...I saw something like this on a property programme and it wasn't cheap...!
Good Luck
You could always see if the wind gets up and blows it off and away for you...:hihi:
Shiesh is right you have to get a specialist firm to remove it and dispose of it properly and it isn't exactly cheap. If you phone the council they will advice you. There are two types of asbestos one is blue and one is white not sure which one is toxic but garges used to be made of the toxic one so I would presume that is what you have.
Whatever you do don't mess with it even a small exposure breathed in can be fatal. My Dad was exposed 10 years ago and found out in 2003 he had asbestos poisoning from a small exposure and died less than 8 months later. The money you save is not worth the risk. Get professional advice.
fnkysknky 25-05-2005, 15:37 As it's asbestos cement you can do it yourself and take it to the tip where they should have a special area for it. Where a suitable mask and try not to damage the sheet(s). Wrap it in polythene and mark it as ASBESTOS. Makes more sense to do it yourself as you can't take trade waste to the tip.
More info including where you can take it is on http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/environment/how-we-work/health-protection-/health-and-safety/asbestos/householders-guide

Sos didn't notice the cement bit - whenever I hear asbestos I automatically freak out a bit cos of my Dads experience.
Skatiechik 25-05-2005, 20:26 I know we can do it ourselves incl. the precautions needed, and I know where we can take it :P We are very lucky with the tip just being down the road. Can only take a certain number of sheets a day tho :(
I was asking if anyone knew how much it might cost for someone else to do it ;) As if it is cheap enough I'll let someone else do it to save us the hassle.
It is all perfectly intact, and a good roof. Just want it gone before it starts to break up, plus wanted to do some spray painting in the garage so would prefer something a bit cleaner to replace it with.
DogTrx4Dumyz 25-05-2005, 22:03 fnkysknky is right. We've done it and as long as you take one sheet at a time to the tip, in a bag, they will take it as domestic waste.
(ooo, it's my first post :) )
fnkysknky 26-05-2005, 08:22 Sorry the other point I was getting across is that for yourself to take it to the tip it's gonna be free. If for example I was going to do it for you - I couldn't take it as it would then be trade waste as I'm charging you so it's better to do it yourself. I don't know of any asbestos removal firms that would deal with such a small job. I suppose somone could do it for you and blag there way into the tip but that's another story :)
Skatiechik 13-07-2005, 10:04 Okay as most people said it is too small a job to get someone else to do it, so looks like we will be doing it ourselves.
Where is the best place to go in Sheffield to get replacement corrugated roofing sheets at a good price?
I would say it would cost around £ 850, at work i often deal with Asbestos issues and this seems to be a starting price.
we can remove asbestos roof sheeting for £300 including proper disposel for further information please call dave on 07956504862

I would imagine the job is done by now the thread is more than three years old

Just ring around and get a quote. You may be surprised at the price.
I had this problem as well and the quote came back to be a few hundred pounds only. It's not just the removal and disposing of the items, but making sure the particles do not become too airbourne and affect any individuals and others.
I previously had a quote for a few hundred pounds only. So it is worth ringing around and finding out quotes.

Hepstall 19-09-2008, 18:00 you need to check disposal licences, also need to be registered asbestos removal contractors and take away double bagged in a sealed asbestos skip (which can cost a fair bit in its own right)
I used a company called Asbestos Safety Ltd from Chesterfield. They charged £500 to take off my garage roof and side sheets and disposed of it correctly. They were Professional, safe and cleaned up well afterwards I would recommend them to anyone.
