View Full Version : Fun day at Castleton walk/shop/pub grub - Sunday December 7th
Sherwood1 08-11-2008, 18:04 Plenty of notice for you on this one a Christmas gathering, put the date in your diary .
We will be meeting outside the visitor's centre which is situated in the main car park, down at the bottom of the village at 12.00. The 272 bus leaves Sheffield Interchange at 11.00am arriving at Castleton at 11.48am.
Weather permitting we will be doing a short walk just for a few hours, if the weather is nasty, we will call the walk off and do extra shopping/eating/drinking.
The plan is to bring some sandwiches for lunch go for a walk, head back to Castleton and have a few hours to browse around shopping, or you may choose to go straight to the pub. We are planning on eating at the George pub in Castleton around 5pm.
Please post if you will be joining us for the walk so that we know to wait for you and make sure that you have a contact telephone number. Also let us know if you will be eating at The George pub although we can not reserve a table, we have already spoken to them and they would appreciate it if we let them know how many of us will be eating in advance.
The times for the bus returning are 18:00, 19:30, 20:30, 22:30 the bus journey back to Sheffield Interchange is just under 1 hour.
We should be there!

Wow, what a surprise! Well done Sherwood for arranging this, it should be a brilliant day, if the other trips we've had to Castleton are anything to go by :)
This should be a good opportunity for us to get in to the Christmas spirit!
Count us out i'm afraid - I'll be working.

Mulled wine, mince pies, booze up. Is this a Walking event or what?
MissChatter 14-11-2008, 13:44 well is it a walk, then mulled wine then mince pies. Looking foreward to it
neoteric 20-11-2008, 16:36 Sound good mulled wine and mince pies are just too good to miss.
Hippiechick3 20-11-2008, 18:07 I'm sort of getting excited for this walk/meal/ drinking session. Is wearing tinsel, reindeer horns and a santa hat OK. Lets dress Christmasy!
MissChatter 21-11-2008, 16:17 I am looking foreward to this one very much. :)
Hi, I've been lurking around the walking group for quite some time now. you sound like a brilliant bunch of people. I would love to join you on this one, it sounds fun! Wwill it be ok if I tag along?
BTW - will it be ok if my partner Hank comes along as well - he doesn't get out of the office much :)

Of course you are welcome, the more the merrier. It looks like it will be a fun day out
As far as I can see, we've currently got 11 people as definites for this, these being Sherwood 1, Neoteric, Nooka, Taxman, Hippiechick3, Scoobz, Zippydedodah, Billysmum, Eclair, Beith, Hank. Oh and young Oscar will be with us again, got permission for him to go in the George, but unfortunately he ain't allowed to eat :(
Regarding the eating arrangements, I've called the George manager Richard today and told him there'll be 11-13 people coming at @ 5 p.m. for the meal, and he's fine with this. So anyone who's got their name down who isn't going could you please let us know asap, and similiarly anyone who wants their name adding please also shout up as soon as poss too. Incidentally, the George manager won't object at all if we increase this to 20 or more, so come on folks, it's Christmas soon, why not get into festive mood and come and join us on this one!
The walk route has been sorted, and it will be a circular one of about 4-5 miles which more or less goes to Hope and back. There aren't too many hills on this one, well, not on the way back anyway :D, and the walk should take @ 3 hours, including more than likely a liquid stop at Hope :o.
Anyone seen the long range weather forecast for next Sunday yet?
Thank you so much for making us welcome - look forward to meeting you all next Sunday! Glad it's a short walk for our first outing - not done much walking for some time, but in desparate need of 'toning up' & getting fitter.
vincentvega 02-12-2008, 15:20 I will be along for this one, seems like ages since ive walked with all of you. Im looking forward to meeting young Oscar :|

Sorry, who are you again? Don't you know this is a private club for Scoobz's friends only? ;)
Be good to catch up with you again

It's ok Taxman, he's already a member and a good one at that. Owes quite a bit in subs mind you, and needs to learn the latest handshake, but won't take us long to sort him out I'm sure :D.
On a serious note, and for the benefit of anyone coming on the walk who wants to print off the route , below is the AA walk we are going to use.
www.theaa.com/travel/details/walk/420242
As mentioned earlier in the thread we are not going to do all this walk, just @ half of it, leaving the walk at instruction no 2 and heading in to Hope, then picking it up again 1/ 2 way between instruction 8 and 9 at the other side of Hope on the Edale road. Of course this could change on the day if the weather's bad ;)
If the weather does turn inclement, there's a nice little cafe/gift shop on the side road opposite the church in Hope. Lovely hot chocolate (for medicinal purposes only of course!)
Rivelin6 03-12-2008, 08:14 I'd like to come too but am waiting on another possible event that day with some friends. Can I let you know asap if I can attend.

No probs Rivelin6, it will be nice if you can make it
foxforcefive 04-12-2008, 11:16 Oooh I should be able to come to this. Will not know for def till Saturday but am 90%.

It will be nice to see you again, hope you make it :)
I've been giving some thought to the return journey. I'm not sure spending an hour on a bus after several beers is a great idea. The other option is to walk back to Hope train station and catch a train from there. The train only takes 25 mins and leaves at 6.56, 8.57 and 10.57
The walk stagger to Hope is only 2 miles
Sorry I've not replied to any postings on this thread for a day or two, just been a bit busy, but now I've read them all I'm encouraged by the interest being shown, and am looking forward to some newbies, and some old friends joining us on this one.
The weather forecast is pretty good for Sunday at the moment, which hopefully will help us to have a cracking day. At the moment there could be 17/18 people if all the maybes turn up, and if we get as many as that it would be a grand turnout!
I noticed that earlier in the thread Hippiechick3 has suggested that we `dress Christmassy`. Well, why not? I'm sure Neo will have something seasonal he'll be able to slip in to :help:, and I've some mistletoe for my flat cap, so whats everybody else going to wear?

Ho, Ho, Ho where did I put my transparent Santa outfit :hihi: You can be sure I will find something seasonal lurking about my drawers and maybe even find a cracker or two to pull. In order to encourage the 'Dress Chrismassy' theme I will be awarding a special GL prize to the 'Best Christmassy Dresser', Judges (me and scoobz) decision final - all bribes by PM only.

Sorry mate, but you're the sole judge of this one, seeing as it's your idea, and not only that I WANT TO WIN IT :o, if you don't mind that is
Rivelin6 06-12-2008, 17:37 I'm a definite unless I can't get up from too much alcohol, sure I'll be ok though. lol
hi..not been for a while but would have liked this one..
eli and I have sorted the 7th out with less healthy stuff though..

Rivelin6 I know where you're coming from; been testing some John Smiths myself this afternoon and might have a thick head tomorrow all being well :).
Be there though for definite, rain or shine, courtesy of my chauffeur :D

cheers, me dears, will do...missing you all, tooooo.
Well that was a fun day. What a shock we all got when we saw the surprise visitor from Lapland, although his reindeer seemed to have lost it's antlers.
The walk was great, if muddier and steeper than expected and the mulled wine and mince pie at The George was most welcome (I owe you Rivelin6)
The food in The George was also top notch.
As well as the usual good company the weather was gorgeous and really brought out the colours of the countryside. Thanks to Hippychick3 for the lift back and welcome to first time walker Rivelin6
Here are the photos (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/saulmcintyre/Castleton2008#) - look and laugh

Well I thoroughly enjoyed myself despite a few hairy bits near the end lol. I'm going to try and persuade my daughter to come on Friday rather than Saturday next weekend so I can get to the party Saturday and the walk Sunday
Love the pictures by the way, didn't realise I was in so many and who's the scary man I'm following up the hill.:hihi:
Had a great walk today. Thanks to Vincentvega, Nooka, Zippedydoodah & Hank for keeping me company when I shied off the big hill at the end. I really enjoyed walking with Santa & his little helpers:hihi:
The meal in the pub was wonderful & can I thank Neoteric for the mulled wine - it was scrummy. Hope to see you all again on another walk - hopefully I'll be a bit fitter then!
neoteric 07-12-2008, 19:41 I really enjoyed today's "Christmassy" walk, well who would have thought Santa himself would have turned up! But somehow he seemed to be without his sackfull of presents, Oh well I'll just have to wait.
The runaway winner for the "Best Christmassy Dresser" was scoobz as Santa plus a joint second prize for Hippychick3 and Zippydedodah his two reindeers, and thanks to everyone including newbies Hank, Beith an Rivelin6 for making it such a fun filled day.
A few photos here (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/neotericwalks/CastletonChrsimassyWalk7December2008#) to add to taxmans excellent collection.
MissChatter 07-12-2008, 20:22 Had another fab day today, and the food and mulled wine at the george was really good in fact more than good. The photos are fab from today. See you all sat night. xx
Great day all round I think, and despite someone forgetting the walk details , and the other leaders not bringing their copies , we managed to muddle our way round Castleton and Hope in the most enjoyable of winter weather, entertaining the masses with our Christmas attire as we went :D.
Taxman and Neos photos are superb as usual, it's amazing to see how many young Oscar managed to get on - is he just the most handsome forum walker ever or what? Got to say that Neo photo no 34 has had us in stitches, poor old Santa with a spilt difference, now that's one for the records isn't it?
Smashing time was had by all in the George at the end in Castleton, despite a few comments here and there about the raucousness of the party.........surely not us :o What a great pub that is though with good food, good beer and a great atmosphere.
The walkers today were Santa Scoobz, Neoteric, Beith, Hank, Sherwood1, Taxman, Eclaire, Vincentvega, Zippydedoodah, Hippiechick3, Billysmum, Rivelin6, Nooka.
As always, just wanna say a big welcome to newbies Beith, Hank and Rivelin6 who joined us for the 1st time today. Welcome to my huuuuge group of friends you lot, lovely to have you with us, you're the 165th, 166th and 167th people to walk with us of which 166 are my "friends" :) ( about 50 of whom are coming to our Christmas party this week)
Sorry, can't miss an opportunity to promote the ambience in this Group!
Hope we see you newbies again soon!
Really enjoyed todays walk, and the meal in the pub. Was lovely to see everyone again after a few weeks absence. Was also nice to meet Eclair, Rivelin6 and Oscar for the first time. :)
Some great photos there Neo and Taxman! :D
billysmum 07-12-2008, 21:19 What a fun filled day we had :D
Not too sure who that dodgy geezer was who turned up in the Santa suit
Really nice to see three newbies today, hope you will all come again.
The food went down well at the George, they even had real chips
Loved the photos once again Taxman and Neo. Oscar is a natural in front of the camera, unlike the rest of us !!!
Hippiechick3 08-12-2008, 12:56 A big thank you to all of you for your company today and providing so much fun and laughter as usual. It was nice to meet new people and to have had a 'never before experience' of 1. rambling with Santa, 2. watching a dog carry a lump of snow around and 3. getting a chcolate orange for looking like a reindeer! Thanks Neo!
See you all soon at the party. :)

Weren't there any charity shops in Castleton where you could give a few more little old ladies a "thrill" :suspect: replacing your troosers...???
Could I book you for our kiddies xmas party next year (there were only about 70 of the little darlings this year....) - I'll be taking photos as usual!!!! :hihi:
Looks like you all had a fabulous time, I always loved Castleton at Christmas!!
Hope you all have a fantastic Christmas!!!! :partyhat:
